Hey, it's been a while, Chalako. Happy Birthday!

Succotash is a corn and bean mixture, served hot and usually eaten as a side dish. Frequently, it's made with lima beans, but sometimes other beans, like cranberry or kidney beans (both sub-species of Phaseolus vulgaris), are used. Some folks add onions, bell pepper and/or bacon drippings. It is an east coast Native dish which has been adapted to non-Native palates. The name is an Anglicization of a Narragansett word.

Wojapi is berry pudding. Wojapi is the Lakota name. Traditionally made with chokecherries (Prunus virginiana), blackberries (various species and subspecies of the genus Rubus) or serviceberries (Juneberries, Saskatoons, Amelanchier alnifolia). Nowadays, it's usually made with frozen blueberries or blackberries, sweetened with sugar or honey and thickened with cornstarch or flour.

Wojapi is like a thin berry pie filling. It's eaten hot or cold, usually with fry bread. It's also used as a sauce with game or an ice cream topping. The dish is getting some traction in roots food and gourmet circles. Pueblo Harvest serves a hot version with a maple, pepita and pecan crumble. It's on the menu at Tocabe.

Many tribes had some version of a fruit stew, compote or pudding. Chiiłchin is the Navajo version made with eatable sumac berries.

Jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus) is a root native to Central America. It is common in the cuisines of certain parts of Mexico. It is usually peeled and eaten raw, frequently with a sprinkling of powdered chile and lime juice. It's crisp and slightly sweet. It tastes a bit like an earthy apple.

Holy musical flashback, Batman.

I'm doing laundry and streaming a mix of Colter Wall, The Dead South, Steel Drivers, Uncle Lucius and The Band of Heathens. About 30 mins in, up comes Half-Breed by Cher. The song that birthed ten thousand wannabes. Someone feeding the algorithm has even more eclectic musical taste than I, LOL.

Did I read that right? A french fry shortage? We're doomed, LOL.

Wasna is used in ceremonies. It is still made. There are many different variations. There is a kind made with cornmeal, raisins and no meat.

Page 19 has one recipe:

Traditional Food Book: Recipes from the Rez

A corn version:

The American Ethnic Cookbook for Students: Wagmiza wasna

Be careful. There are rules about handling this food. I've been told eating it at the wrong time can cause strokes.

You can get a modern version, the Tanka Bar:

Hey Chalako, we mentioned chocolates on the other thread. If you want to try something that harkens back to the New World origins of chocolate here is a recipe that may approach the Mayan/Aztec chocolate drink.

Xocolatl

That beverage is a far cry from the modern incarnation of hot chocolate. It is more like bitter, spicy expresso, LOL.

Today a new box of those flapjacks with decorative eatable hazelnut kernel has been made.

For friends there is one flapjack with luck two.

LOL, it is only a very small box of them.

I know it's an old Tim McGraw song but I can't hear the phases Half-Breed and not think of this now that I've seen it.

A french fry shortage. You poor souls. Now you have to come to Belgium because we have them in abundance. In every village or town we have french fry stands. They are eaten with mayonaise and pickles and all kinds of sauces.
Besides that you can get vol au vent and beefstew, fricandelles, brochettes and many more.

I have no idea, it's a few hondred years agoo.

I know that the Nobility had plenty of food. The workers on the other hand were starving sometimes. We were dependent on grain but when there was a poor harvest we just died of hunger. And then came the potatoes and corn. That was a blessing for the poor people.

All this talk of french fries has made me hungry. I'll take some nice crispy fries, please.

Anyone doing anything fun this weekend?

I'm getting a wasp's nest removed from inside a wall of my house tomorrow morning. A relief for me, but probably not fun for the wasps. Hopefully, there won't be too many ticked off, homeless wasps hanging around in yard by the afternoon. I want to work in my studio

Wasps are no fun, we haven't had much of a problem with them this year but we have been having major issues with the invasive Spotted Lantern Fly. Now that it's cold we are supposed to go and scrape their eggs off of the trees and destroy them with alcohol.

The Philly Wings play their first game of the season tomorrow, although it's on the road and not a home game, so I'll be watching that and eating some buffalo wings with a few cold lagers. We sponsored some of our family in Albuquerque for Christmas so off to the post office tomorrow to send them some Xmas goodies. More Christmas shopping, and maybe making some cookies.

Then I got a new security camera for our back yard so I have to build a mount and run some CAT5e into the house to get it connected into the server. Our back yard is open with no fence and people won't stop walking their dogs in our yard and not picking up after them. Also, the trash collectors are incredibly careless with the wheelie bins especially near our vehicles since we park out back.
