Here ya' go

We needed to take away their phones and have let our current twenty-somethings outside to play with fire and sticks more. Folks need recipes and kits to make s'mores? There are telescoping, stainless steel marshmallow roasting forks! Civilization as we know it is doomed.

Back when mastodons roamed the earth and I was a kid, you tried to avoid skewering the marshmallows on twigs from poisonous plants. You picked the dropped graham crackers off the ground and blew off the yutz, before slapping them over the melted marshmallow. The Hersey bars had weird shapes from melting in your backpack or pocket. You ate ash, bits of wrapper and a bug or two. As long as the burn unit wasn't involved, you had made your s'more the right way.

It's 108F here. My poor AC can't keep up. It hasn't cycled off since 1pm. It is nearly 80F inside, which is not where I set it. Hopefully when the sun gets off the west side of the house, it will start cooling down.

We're supposed to get rain Monday and/or Tuesday. Hopefully, it will be without too much wind and ruckus. We desperately need some rain. We've only had one light rain since late June.

This discussion of camping treats brought back some memories.

When I was a kid -- see above about the herds of mastodons -- our church had this thing where you sold candy bars to raise money to send an inner city kid to church camp. You sold these $1 candy bars and $0.30 went toward the inner city kid and $0.30 toward you. You had to sell six cases to get to camp free. I would sell the heck out of these candy bars. The first year, I walked two miles through the sub-division on a Sat. dragging a wagon full of cases of candy bars, knocking on every door.

(When mastodons roamed earth, parents didn't drive their kids through the neighborhood.... Mom said, "Be home by dinner and don't go to the house with all motorcycles out front." The last I ignored after the bunch of bearded guys, smoking hand rolled "cigarettes" and drinking beer in the yard bought a half a case of candy bars. For the entire 8 years I did this, they were my best customers.)

But church camp introduced me to this entire world of organized camping. My folks camped. We parked our trailer and boiled things over the fire, but we didn't do sing alongs or toast marshmallows. We hiked. My father approached camping like he did road trips -- got to put in the miles before sunset. My mother, ever the teacher, made you memorize plants and look at algae under a sun illuminated microscope.

So, going to camp with all these kids who knew all these songs and had all these weird camp rituals, was different. Even as I type this, I'm have "I caught a little baby bumblebee..." and "Green, green the rushes grow..." running through my head. The high point of the day organized activities that didn't involve much hiking was the evening snack. And the high point of the week was the camp out, where you would sleep outside in the woods, rather than in the cabins. The first day of camp, your cabin would get together with your counselor and this recipe book from the cafeteria and pick the different snacks and the meal for the campout.

Everyone picked s'mores for one night and homemade ice cream. But, the other 3 nights were a festival of weird recipes from this cookbook of campout food.

Anybody here ever eaten a banana boat? This gem is made by peeling back a section of the banana peel, stuffing in chocolate chips and mini-marshmallows, wrapping it in aluminum foil and burying it in the coals. It cooked during vespers and a half a dozen interminable campfire songs. Then you'd dig it out and try to eat the molten mess in the dark with a plastic spoon. About two bites in you'd realize you had gotten someone else's boat. Someone who had eaten the marshmallows and chocolate chips....

How about campfire pies? These require a piece of hardware that is a cross between a tortilla press and a branding iron. You would open this hinged implement with two opposing shallow bowls and line each bowl with a slice of white bread smeared with margarine. Then you'd plop on a dollop of grape jelly, clamp the two halves together, tear off the excess bread, and hold the entire contraption over the flames. Once some none to precisely defined period of time had passed, with only paper towels for utensils, you would pry out your pie. Remember the branding iron part? At the end, your singed fingers would be clutching a toasted jelly sandwich.

Applesauce gingerbread cake? This recipe has potential. When prepared by someone more skilled than your average camp counselor and a collection of impatient campers, it is quite good. You take a jar of applesauce and box of gingerbread cake mix. You pour the applesauce in a dutch oven, mix up the cake mix, pour it on top, cover the dutch over, place it in the coals and cover with coals. However, this takes about 30-45mins to bake. (And a good bead of coals.) There was never enough time to get the fire right, cook the cake and eat it between vespers and lights out. In a semi-cooked state it is less appealing. I imagine nowadays there would be lawsuits over the semi-raw eggs, LOL.

Hey ! We had a heck of a storm today ! Just a little wind , hard rain for a couple hours , then easy rain for the rest of the middle part of the day and done by 3 or so ! Probably a couple inches but the ground soaked it up like a sponge ! The horses were rolling in the mud and barely found any !

Somebodies pit-bull/boxer mix was running loose last night !Killed a kitten I had just got tame enough to pet ! Grrrr...... I went out cause our dogs were raising holy heck. I grabbed the shotgun as I went out the door not knowing what it was. Yelled at it to git and it totally ignored me. I shot the ground about 6 ft behind it and he took off like his backside was on fire ! I'm bettin' he won't be back ! Went out this morning and found the kitten , he'd been crunched and his mama was just out there crying ! If I'd known , I'd have killed the dog. If it comes back , I will !I hate mean dogs !

Temp down to 12°C in teh night, may be 23C in the afternoon.

Fog is closing in and getting thicker every minute. I hope it will be gone at 10:00 in the morning.

Corona test was negative but the aftersentence to avoid any legla responibility if they erred makes that paper worthless.

At Tuesday there shall be no mask obligation in the classroom but on the campus. Just the other way round might be possible but the final regulations will be issued on Monday afternoon for Tuesday morning.

Crazy politicians.

There is a version of the gingerbread applesauce cake that is made in a crockpot with pie filing instead of applesauce. But, it is lacking something. Maybe the trace of ashes and the mosquitos....

Hey BA, what did you guys do at camp? Did you even have camp -- not camping, but these organized events where you send your kids to do group activities in the woods and stay overnight -- in Germany?

Ches, you might have found the camp I went to interesting. It was right next to Jumonville Glen. Some years we'd hike over the hill behind the pool and listen to a talk about George Washington, Tanacharison and Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville. If I remember correctly, your people were caught up in the Seven Years War that some historians claim started at Jumonville Glen.

I'm jealous. The official temperature yesterday was 106F. Since the weather station at airport was under a series of pop up thunderstorms during the hottest part of the day, I take that with a grain of salt. Most of the Weather Underground network was showing 107-109F in the southern part of the county.

I need to get my fanny out the studio. I need to work today. I bought The Rider to watch/listen to while I work.

Autsch, that is hot. High humidity too? Bad for the cardiovascalar system. Today cloudy with sun. In the morning 6 o'clock 57°F at home now 75°F 14:30 o'clock.

Tommorrow new mask regulation at school and still no information about details. I do not understand why no longer wearing mask in class rooms while on campus and on bus and train and shops you have to wear masks and wearing no mask in bus and train you pay a penalty of 150€, about 150$.

Even my older students are only shaking heads in disbelieve about that political decision.

We have camp if you are with the pathfinders, the volounteer firefighters and there is some town organized camp for school kids during holidays for those who can't afford to travel in holidays.

With the pathfinders and fire fighters you stay overnight in camp, perhaps with tents, paddle in a canoe on one of our smaller not so deep lakes or on the Niers.

I have learned camp with the army, with tent, no tent, barn or in the M113.
