I use my hair like a weather rock. hahahaaa
Sounds like you are going to be working around here. We're supposed to get up to 3" of rain between now and this time tomorrow night. More NE winds blowing up to around 35 mph with gusts over 40. We need the rain, but dang, I wish it could hold off until tomorrow afternoon so I don't have to drive in it. LOL!

53... pffft... it's minus 10c here this morning... only 3 more inches of ice to go and then the lake is ready to fish... yippee!

When are you Canuckastanians gonna switch over to English, and stop using that metric system? You know I had to use a F to C converter to know just how much I had to laugh, that I'm not in that cold frigged, below freezing winter weather. Oh wait, it's only 14 degree F. That's not that bad. I remember back in Guam in '42, the worst blizzard in history ripped through the small village of Merizo, with deadly -40 degrees, before the windchill, and me with out my parka. Supplied only with a roll of duct tape, some beef jerky and my wits, I began my journey through the frozen wastelands, back to civilization.

Uh, this also counts as my make an obvious lie post for the day.

If I recall correctly, only the US, Liberia and Myanmar still use the old imperial systems of measurements.... time for the US to catch up with the rest of the world....lol

I hope we make it up to 14 F today! Someone said we're expected to get up in the 30's by Wed, then cold again.

It's tolerable...with a toasty house, heater in the car, warm coat, gloves and boots!

Oh!! I love to go icefishing! But then, the kind of icefishing we do doesn't involve ice huts or little short fishing poles.

When my kids were little, it was an excuse for a skating party.

Now it will be a good excuse to pull the camper up to the lake, drive the 4wheelers all the way up to the mountains, and eat lots of good, hot food!

We have two kinds of huts...the one you drag out onto the ice that has a floor with the ice holes cut out... we have a radio, tv, benches, lights and woodstove in that one... the other one is a portable on that with one pull of a handle it pops up. We use that if we are trying different lakes around the area. We have a portable heater for that one.

We also carry along a propane turkey fryer and we have a cook up at the end of the day with our catches. Hubby built a fire pit that is on sled tracks so we can pull is along and it's high enough to not sit on the ice (no melting then). For the kids, we always do up smores and cook up smokies for them. We tend to stay out all day and well into the evening.. it's a big social event around here.

I guess that's why 10 degrees doesn't feel too cold..LOW HUMIDITY!!

When we ice fish, we are after the BIG lake trout and ling (aka tarbot or something like that). I've heard there's walleye out there, but I've never seen one.

So we cut a whole string of holes in the ice - about 10 holes about 15 feet apart or so. Then using a large hook on a long length of nylon twine, bait it with a live minnow. Then just tie it off to a large stick across the whole and come back and check it. Reminds me of setting out lines to catch halibut in Alaska.

OK, so looking at the regulations, you're only allowed 6 holes and you have to be in attendance. Years ago, we'd set out the lines and come back the next day to check them. So that's why we'll pull the camper up to the lake....set the lines and have a place to warm up after sledding, skating, 4-wheeling, etc...and check the lines periodically.

Up here we're not allowed to use live bait or barbed hooks either. Alberta is trying to prevent invasive species from taking over our lakes. The no barbs are better if you're a catch and release type - but I don't mind using them all the time. Makes it easier to get the hook out. Now I just use left over cooked shrimp tails... the trout love them.

That's a good idea! I'll save my shrimp tails the next time.

We do have to buy minnows that are from the Wind River Drainage. But we're all for catch and eat, don't do much catch and release unless we're fishing in Yellowstone.

The last ling we caught was over 3 feet long and reminded me a lot of nice halibut flesh. And I should add that they're BURBOT, not tarbot!!
