i use to stay w/my grandparents every summer when i was a kid...i use to do the dishes for them and my shirt use to get wet...lol...anyway my gramma use to say that that meant i was gonna marry an alcoholic!! scared the crap outta me so that's why i'm not married......LOL. even as an adult when i go home to her house & do her dishes....my shirt still gets wet and if she notices...she still tells me that! idk..i never asked her where that came from...

she also tells us that if our hand itches...rub it in your own pants pocket because then money will come to you.

i was told not to whistle at night, kill spiders in the house...not to place moccasins on the table...but not exactly sure why....bad luck of some sort i believe?

also if a bird flys in the front door that means death...& if you hear an owl outside the front door then it also means death.

Ok I went looking for the whistling in the house superstition... this is what I found so far:

russia: you're whistling away money, you'll go broke
korean: you're calling out snakes
thai: you're calling out ghosts (this sounds familiar.....I kinda recall my auntie saying this, but we're not Thai and I think this was more about whistling at night).
University of California some guy said you're inviting the devil to dance on your roof.

I've heard of the not throwing away hair or nail clippings but it's something I learned from my Grandpa. I'll pm ya about it, tho.
I was always told that witches or other bad people could use these items(along with hair), to bewitch or cast a bad spell on you. Do bad mojo in otherwords.

Someone told me in a PM to check out the movie"THE MISSING"that there was a scene I would be interested in.Sure enough an Apache "brujo"found a woman's hairbrush and used the hair on it to curse her,so that explains that one.Thanx for all the replies folks!...and keep smilin'1

That's exactly what I told Apacheheart in the pm, except I was kind of weary of posting it here. I didn't want to bring a gris gris down on myself. You just never know....

Mom and dad had us burn ours. I hate the smell....

I've also heard stories of witches/etc. riding horses and people.

This one I know for a fact comes from the german side of the family - hang a broom over, next to or near the front door and bad things will stay swept away.

AngelF,

I heard if your hand itches, rub it on wood and money will be coming your way. It never fails. Sometimes big and sometimes small income has always followed shortly after!

Yeah, I heard about the hair and fingernails too. Funny how a lot of indigenious people have this same belief.

My Grandma said that young ladies shouldn't leave their hair around the house (i.e. hairbrushes, etc.) because of men coming around that are not our relatives...SO THAT"S HOW MR. KCAT GOT ME.....

Yeah, I heard about the hair and fingernails too. Funny how a lot of indigenious people have this same belief.
even stranger yet Whome, there's other cultures around the world with the same belief about hair and fingernails.. For me it's just too dang hard to keep track of all the long azz hairs that I shed everytime I brush mine. So I shirk this belief personally.

And as for the itching of any body part... dang I wish that was true for me with the hand, because I itch ALL THE TIME , all over especially the hands becuase I'm a chronic hand washer (OCD).

Ok how about does anyone have any superstitions about just yelling, COME IN.. when someone knocks on the door?

Nobody is supposed to knock when entering my house, their just supposed to walk in...don't know why... I can tell when someone I don't know or know that well is at the door because they knock. Then I'm like, [email protected], gotta get up and open the door, but I don't say 'come in!'.

Don't whistle at night
Don't leave hair and nail clippings around
Don't play with snakes, lizards or anything reptilian.
Don't watch the clouds.
Don't talk about the recent dead.
Don't count the stars.
Don't mess around graveyards.
Don't pick up broken pottery that you find.
Don't step on blood.

just a few from the top of my head. Grew up with MANY MANY superstitions, that are Apache or Laguna.

Those are pretty tuff rules and regulations of the Laguna!

Some tribes in the NW say you have to save your hair and nails, can't go outside in the dark mad or sad, can't whistle at night, can't say the name of the recently deceased, can't cook mad or angry or sad, can't point at certain mountains, or can't point with your pointer finger though named as such, geez, can't gamble, yeah right!!!

There isnt a superstition about that, well just creepy stuff that happens at the casino, which I am sure a lot natives can relate to. You know, the devil showing up, a guy dressed all nice with hooves, and how you should not take money from him or else you'll win then die.... or how ghosts wander casinos, or is that just our tribe hahaha.

gambling isnt necessarily bad i think it might have a great deal with what the white man has taught seein how many tribes had traditional games, some dealing with gambling prior to the intrusion of the whites.

I never understood the not gambling thing since Natives been gamblin since forever!

There is a story that every 5 years or so the Devil shows up at the local bar. In the last story, he stomped his foot at the door step and left a big imprint of his hoof or somethin'.

Crazy, I got some southern frenz that got some pretty good deer woman stories, too. Those are my fav!!

Anywayz, I always warn all my homeboyz and cuzins to alwayz look at a girlz feet to see if she has hooves!

I have heard from the Crees not to point at the Northern Lights and from the Pawnee, not to point at the stars.

Anyone else belief this?
