The wind finally died down here, so we no longer have wind chill. It's supposed to hit or break a record tying 33 for this area tonight.

It's 54 and raining right now. That's like perfect weather for a Saturday morning...if you're not working.

That does sound pretty good. For it to be perfect for me, Mother Nature would need to throw in a good thunderstorm.

Saw the flash and heard the thunder. I was working outside at the time.

Hope you got inside. I don't know how the lightening is out there, but here, you don't want to be outside. I will push it and sit on the porch-still chasing that elusive lightening photo. We have an old TV antennae about a foot off the front porch. I was out there with my camera stuff, sitting on the swing and waiting. All of a sudden, there was a huge flash and a loud boom right by that metal antennae. I retreated in the house so fast I nearly dropped the camera. After the storm had passed, there was a divet and some singed grass in the yard about 4 feet from the porch. I was just happy it didn't hit the magnolia tree.

Nah. We don't have lightning that dad here. Well, up in the mountains there is. Mostly stays up in the sky, but once in a while it'll start a forest fire.

I used to go take a nap during thunderstorms when I lived out there...for 27 summers. lol

**laughin** yeah, when i tell my friend about the ‘cold’ weather out there in california, he laughs. cold up here is like 30 and below. last year i got caught in an unexpected snow storm that dumped so much snow that it jammed up the roadways. i wasnt driving..but when i left the house, i had muh favorite ‘gators on. well, my friend got within a mile of my place and i had to trek in the rest. by the time i got 1/3 of the way, my feet were frozen. oh gosh how they hurt by the time i got inside! i was lucky and got to keep all muh toes.

cold right now and windy! but still havent turned on the forced heat.

@trouble are you really really really sure that you want all that snow. Snow is nice for the first day then it sucks afterwards, it becomes dangerous especially if the county, city, and state DOT don't do their jobs and prep the roads. Heck last year an ice storm swept through on a Friday night and I had to go to work on the following morning and they didn't salt or brine the busiest entrance ramp on that highway (the one near my house) I slid down the ramp and bounced off the guard rail... 4X4 didn't do crap to stop that. Just a minor pill-sized chip of paint is the extent of the damage.

Tonight 35°
Tomorrow Hi/Lo: 59°/46° Partly Sunny clearing over night.

10cm of snow today and more still falling... yippeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

We're pretty good with road clearing etc. The snow here is the big, fluffy, dry stuff that powder skiers love. We also have studded snow tires that really helps with traction.

Here's a question from somebody who has no clue about winter. What do you do with the regular tires when you put snow tires on-just store them in the garage until the snow is done?

Yup.. they go in the garage on a tire rack...lol Now some folks up here buy extra rims and have their snow tires put on those and the the summer tires are kept on the fancy rims.

I also carry in my car... chains, traction aids, shovel and a winch along a bag full of safety gear (food, candles, flares, blanket and change of boots/socks (cause if you have to push your car/truck and snow gets down your boots and makes your feet wet - at minus 40C you can end up with hypothermia/frostbite just from driving with wet boots. The key is if you are in a cold zone is to make sure you carry your safety gear up front with you. If you end up ditching your vehicle, the weight of the snow may not allow you to get out of the vehicle to pop that trunk or if you smash up, you may be pinned and not be able to reach the back seat. That parka/blanket in the back won't do you any good if you can't get to it.

We can only wish for the light fluffy snow, we usually get the wet packed snow that turns to ice and icky slush. Well then again I'm moving to the desert in a few weeks.

We can get nasty winters here but it doesn't really warrant the massive costs to buy special snow tires. We can buy snow chains for the tires but they aren't allowed on a lot of roads here because the damage they can do... My state was ranked one of the worst for the state of our road and bridge infrastructure.

We used to get a bunch of camping gear catalogs and sometimes when I looked through them, I would see stuff that I thought would come in handy if you were traveling in deep cold like you have up there, Yaahl. Besides the stuff you mentioned, I always figured those little pocket hand warmers would be a nifty thing to have.

Over the last few years many provinces up here have legislated that vehicle owners must have snow tires their cars from Oct to Apr. It was hilarious in Quebec when they did it, the factories run of snow tires for that year was no where close to being able to meet the demand. I suspect by 2015, all provinces will make it mandatory to have snows on.

Just a minor pill-sized chip of paint is the extent of the damage.

Yeah,I'm sure...if I could manage to move up north to the woods somewhere or to Alaska, I'd be a happy happy girl......I don't worry about my driving abilities down here.....and am aware that as in your case accidents DO happen....and its those on the road that don't know what their limitations are or how to take the necessary precautions that bother me.....when it gets rough, those people need to do the right thing and stay home and stay off the roads....but that doesn't happen here...we get a little ice or snow and everyone wants to go out and be a hot rod....that's just stupid to me....they have no clue how to drive on it and yet they are out there putting themselves and others in harms way..that's not cool....but see, where as you have learned to drive in it, and accidents do happen, but you're not out there just willy nilly doing donughts or anything......big difference....

OH!!!...and You're a zombie hunter in training I see!!!...you'd be surprised at how some of that stuff DOES come in handy around the house in case of a really bad storm, or tornado or flood, etc etc....

A little tiny tea candle will keep you just as warm if you are stranded in the car. I throw a few under the seat and in the warmer weather, they make the car smell nice...lol

Up in the Yukon, it's kind of the unwritten rule that if you are traveling along the Al-can hwy and there is a stranded car, you stop and pick up the passengers. You dont leave someone on the side of the road when it's minus 50. It could be days before another vehicle passes by. I've quite often made the trip into town with the back seat all squished with folks...lol

@trouble - one thing that folks from down south don't really get with driving up north is that the further north you go the less chance the road works will be using salt or a salt/sand compound on the roads for traction. Salt doesn't melt the ice below a certain temp and sand just ends up polishing the ice. The road works use a 1/4" aggregate for traction. On average you can go through up to 3 windshields a season from the stones hitting your windows. I do get a chuckle when I see American service people with plates from Georgia/Texas driving on through Northern BC and the YT on their way to a posting in Alaska. Some have never seen snow let alone driven in it. We tell them to think of it as driving on white mud. lol
