Whats with all the "ndns" in the Southeast part of the US? They sound like a bunch of nuts. Where in heavens name are they getting all this "info"? I dont even remember there being powwows in the deep south a few years ago.
Some one should post those crazy pictures to a thread named 'Worlds Funniest Powwow Pictures'. |

Haven't seen anything crazy ...... yet lol.
But I have seen some 'embarrassing and rude things at a few powwows. The most embarrassing or ammussing [depending on who you are] had to have been this white chic afew years back who was walking arround in what looked like pieces of a ndn halloween costume and these feathers [the kind ya get at carnivals attatched to a roach clip] all through her hair. I didn't know wether I should laugh or be offended at first, but ended up LMFAO at her by the third time I saw her trying to imitate a grass dancer. Just looked like something out of a bad hollywood movie I was at one 2 yrs ago, this one was held on the grounds of an ammusement park [of all places] right near a roller coaster and for the first hour or so all ya heard was this dang coster going round and everyone livin it up. They finnally shut it down after being told how disrespectful it was to the dancers and drummers, not to mention everyone else.

I heard about the lady withthe slip falling around her legs out here in cali,
I once saw 2 wasicu girls dressed as bears, I swear to God they had on bear costumes at hotel powwow. Then they got too hot and took them off and were beet red and dripping sweat....nasty nasty nasty. Being here in Lala land you know we always get the ones who go to a costume shop and come as Pochontas, complete with head band. Funny, Funny stuff. Oh what about the looky lous who come up and stand behind a drum and try to sing along, then get mad when they're asked to stop. V

i was at a big pow wow a few years back, and during grand entry there was this guy who was dancing, osrt of greeting dancing as they made a turn. i initially didn't think of it. then the shirt came off, security came into the arena and escorted him right out of the arena. i didn't see him for the rest of the pow wow.

Well, I live in the SF Bay Area of California, so...... Yeah. You can imagine whatever you want-its probably happened at one point or another out here.
Funniest thing was the time when that Pocahontas movie by Disney was out. I guess some white lady bought her kid an 'official Indian Princess' outfit and tried to enroll her at the Women's Tradish. Competition at Washington Univ in St. Louis. She got real upset-guess she wanted that prize money! Heard a rumor one time about a white woman in O'Fallon, MO who showed up at a dance in the mid-90's and proceeded to get naked during the blanket dance and long story short, I guess she was low on cash 'cuz there she was, spread eagle on the blanket..... |

Yeah, I'm a singer and have seen this before. We got asked to sing once and a lady (non-white for what its worth) just kept smiling this crazy smile at me and during a rest, she tried to touch the Drum. Just shot her 'ol hand out there like I wouldn't catch her... My initial reacion was to slap her hand with my drumstick, but I didnt know where her hand had been and I love that stick, so I just sat back and let the Head Singer deal. Man, it was annoying though...

The craziest thing I ever saw?? hmmm....
Well one time they contested adults during the day... in the HEAT.... while they had a non-indian dance contest at night...in the cool air. Then they paid out the winners of the non-indian dance contest for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. They did this for two nights in a row! LOL Those white people must've really thought they could jam.. some were ok... while some were making utter fools of themselves. BUt anything for a quick buck....right? LOL |

I remember once at a powwow that my friends Native American club at school was holding some people showed up that nobody seemed to know. They had rather odd outfits that looked more like Halloween costumes, one woman was carrying this weird looking stick all painted up with that glitter paint. They started dancing in a most unusual manner during the intertribals, it was one man and two woman. The women looked as though they hadn't combed their hair in like...well...never. And don't even get me started on the armpits...barf!
Well at supper break the man asks if he can play his flute and the powwow committee reluctantly agrees to give him some time to do so. He really got into it too, moving around all crazy, like he was in some kind of rock band or something. I asked my friend who they were, but she didn't know. Another time I recall seeing this guy with a pretty unusual hair cut, he had braids but they were practically on top of his head, whereas the rest was mostly shaved, especially the back of his head, he had a thick mustache and he would always dance during intertribals, but the way he danced like the way his body moved reminded me of the Disney character Goofy, and it seemed as though, because of the way he moved his arms, that he was shadow boxing around the entire arena. |

Very embarrasing
Embarrasing what when I was in the grand entry, we were lining up and suddenly.. My hairtie drops... So in a rush, I put it back on, and right in the middle of the Grand Entry it falls off so I feel my hair feels lighter and i'm like "oh great" and a drum was laughing, becuase I had a shell tie pigtail lol. while dancing, I took the other one off and looked like a wannabe without em.. and i pretty much looked like one anyways becasue my outfit wasnt completly done and was pretty angry because the hairtie broke. Left after the exhibition. If any of you were at the UN powwow in portland oregon you might remember that
![]() Not a fun powwow to be in if that happens b/c I was the only Crow Style person which drawed more attention to me. |
