What's Your Fav Fruit?

Omg.. I have eaten so many of my favourite fruit "Blueberries" today, I am either going to turn into "A Blue Avatar Person" from the movie Avatar, or I am going to turn into A Smurff, being "Smurfette" hahahahaha.

In the interest of making this thread have some tie in with Native culture, maybe this should be what is your favorite New World fruit, LOL.

Jeaniebee would that be Vaccinium myrtillus(bilberry) or Vaccinium corymbosum(northern high bush, imported to England in the during colonization) or some other New World species?

I suppose Theobroma cacao doesn't count, since what I love is produced from the fermented seeds. Avcaado, Persea americana, would be up there. Pumpkin Cucurbita pepo, among others is a special favorite too.

(Cripes Dr. Sumner rubbed off on me, LOL. I do recommend her book American Household Botany, btw. It is a very interesting examination of plants -- New and Old World -- used in Euro-American households. It's fascinating how their household botanical usage and knowledge sometimes overlapped and mostly failed overlap with our various Nations. The book is quite readable for lay science book. It lacks some of the special excitement her lectures could engender, especially when she suggested to the freshmen men that the human species should take up asexual reproduction, LOL.)

Acai berry - berry from South America
Acai berries help to not only fight free radicals. They have antibacterial properties, improve the condition of blood vessels and reduce the level of bad cholesterol, thereby preventing cardiovascular diseases. Strengthen the immune system . Is it true that heals?

@OLChemist lol, Yes maybe that wold have been a better title, but sometimes to head something at "what is Native Americans Fav Fruit?" I thought sounded rude, or makes it sounds like Another Planet. So yours is definately the best idea. We can get all what you mention at our health food shops, but they are really expensive. I also love Manuka Honey, its very good for you and has natures own anti biotics and healing qualities in them. They also do it in shampoo, bath washes etc, a normal size jar of Manuka Honey will cost 15.00 here and a small bottle of Manuka Shampoo/bath product is 10.00 anything here in England that is good and natural is very expensive. Even all tyoes of natural Nuts here are expensive lol.

@yaahl Any theories why, since the 60's, Hollyweird has been obsessed with telling variations on this story? Man Called Horse, Lawrence of Arabia, Dances With Wolves, Last Samurai, Avatar same story, different set of brown (or blue) people. What I love is they pat themselves on the back for being so respectful and accepting of the other cultures depicted in these stories. Can't they see these are just the same old colonizer's tale of the inferior other and the white man's burden?

Ahem...in keeping with the topic (LOL)...my favorite Native American fruit is the Navel Orange (Navelus Orangi)...picked off the tree in the winter in a certain part of a valley in a certain part of the New World.

You just pull the orange from the tree, peel the thick skin (sometimes I eat the white inner skin), open it in half and eat the segments. It doesn't matter the sweet succulent juice is running down your chin and getting all over your clothes. Then you eat the little orange that grows within the orange (that's the navel). You just eat as many as you woant because the trees are full!

I forgot to add, the winter temperature in said valley is 'warm' during the winter. I've seen it at 86F in February.

Take that!

I think if I remember film 101 class was that in the early days of film, First Nations folks were a hot topic for the camera. White folks loved to seeus dance around at their Saturday matinees.

When talkies came, the western was the most popular genre but First Nations lost their edge as being interesting and became the bad guys. (keep in mind this coincided with the big land push of both the railways out west and land settlement in the early teens/20s.)

There's a cool documentary called "Reel Injun" that speaks as to why our portrayal has gone from Noble Savage to bad guys back to the eco-warrior/persecuted people themes. Reel Injun

You don't have to wait. Chokecherries, Prunus virginiana, made the reverse trip to England in the 17th century. As near as I can tell they have made no inroads in the food culture outside of the New World. And dang little into Euro-American culture.

(My apologies to those who have heard the chokecherry cyanide warning before.)

Jeaniebee, make sure you don't just try to eat them should you find them. Like many Native foods they require correct harvesting and processing. These berries are mostly pit (and none too sweet if picked and processed wrong.) Like all Prunus species, the pits contain amygdalin, a cyanide releasing glycoside. Traditional processing methods degrade the glycoside and outgas the cyanide, reducing the level of toxin.

Drying chokecherries

JD, thanks for the flashback to grad school. Working late and listening to Buddy Red Bow while I tuned my dye laser, LOL.

@OLChemist, Thank you for letting me know. I am composing a Things To Taste List lol, places to go, and things to see, and do aswell for my holiday next year. As I am quite the adventurous type of person lol. So all types of food is definately a must on my list, whilst I am travelling to different parts.

My favorite new world fruit is bing cherries...but I don't know the scientific name of them...love them though...I like how they stain everyone up when they trynna sneak some from the fridge...lol you can always tell the culprit...nice and juicy, sweet and not always in season.

@Chevy_truckin_NDN I managed to watch all of avatar and came outside to face sudden downfall of thick snow lol took me 2hrs to get home instead of normal 40mins lol. Everyone seems to mention Avatar, but No Smurff? Lol. Getting back to topic rofl, They ...sound good too so will also be putting them on my To Taste List Too. I love the way that you cannot try to sneak any without getting caught lol. Thanks .
