What is your word for.....breastmilk?

Just finished a conversation with some other ppl...
about the T-shirts that say "Got Doodoo" and how incorrect it is...also, non-natives might think we are asking "Got poop?"
Doodooshaboo is Cow's Milk
Niiniishaboo is Momma's milk, ie -breastmilk

"Got Doodooshaboo?" would be correct if comparing the milk ads, ie - "Got Milk" but since so many native's are dairy intolerant, this might not be best.
If we want to promote breastfeeding in the Ojibwe culture, the best T-shirts would say "Got Niiniishaboo?" ie- "Got Breastmilk?"

Anyways, I was wondering what word other indigenous ppl use for breastmilk? Not cow's milk, but breastmilk from a human mother...?

Maji 07-31-2005 11:13 PM

I disagree with you, doo doo shaboo is what we were told by our elders even if your right I will still call them doo doo shaboos nananaboozhoo hey is that wennanaboozhoos woman?

**jdazmum** 07-31-2005 11:48 PM

Sorry to hear that. Especially, considering the high rates of obesity and diabetes, both of which are MORE likely to occur in an infant that is formula fed.
Maybe if more indigenous ppl weren't afraid to talk about breasts and breastfeeding, we wouldn't have such a high rate of infant mortality, disease, etc.

Also, the bonding that occurs between mother and baby is much stronger. The mother will be more likely to take action if her infant is in danger. Maybe, there would be less cases of sexual abuse/predation upon our children.
Native teachings also tell the breastfeeding mom to stay away from alcohol and drugs. The infant will then be more healthy and so will mom.

Also, the cost of formula, bottles, nipples, dish soap, etc is way more than just breastfeeding.

Have you ever read the ingredients on formula?
Whey protein - is the WASTE by-product of cow's milk.

The Creator made breastmilk, not formula.
The Creator, also, made it so that a wetnurse or sister, cousin, can breastfeed your infant if you are unable to.

okay, I'll get off my soapbox...

Plus the containers are really recyclable. Most are pleasant to look at. My word for them is DAMMMMMMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are overthinking it man.... it's just supposed to be humorous ROFLMAO!!!

**jdazmum** 08-02-2005 05:08 PM

No kidding huh? What's with the breastmilk crusade? We all know breastmilk is great for babies, milk in general is good for the body............or are you just bored and couldn't think of a thread?? LOL! kidding.

anyway..................*sigh*

Mia Gahdus 08-02-2005 08:32 PM

Milk in general really isn't that good. Especially for native americans. Too many of our infants are dying because they are given formula. Many indians have severe dairy allergies.

I am on a crusade to stop our infants from dying from misinformation given to us.

Also, I am sick and tired of young indian men trying to get a peek at my breasts when I am nursing my baby at the powwows. What happened to basic respect?

Blackbear 08-02-2005 09:02 PM

ROFLMAO!! well maybe they just trying to see what you are doing and are actually embarrassed after they look and figure it out!

**jdazmum** 08-02-2005 09:06 PM

LMAO!!! If you are concerned about people peeking in on your breastfeeding, why are you doing it at a public function anyway? Doesn't make sense.

**jdazmum** 08-02-2005 09:06 PM

Some states, public safety can arrest you for breastfeeding in public?? Did you know that? sounds crazy, but true.

**jdazmum** 08-02-2005 09:10 PM

Sorry, but I am not going to stop feeding my daughter milk, just because it may cause obesity. It's better than beer like some crazy ndn mothers. Oh, forgot to mention, more woman suffer osteoporosis because they don't get enough calcium. That goes for alot of native woman/man, when back in the day didn't get enough milk.

middle of the sky 08-02-2005 09:10 PM

 got doodoo? thats what we call em ..i think other peeps call em something similar and im a nish... there different versions of ojibway...
i breastfeed cuz it was cheap and convenient..im lactose intolerant ..pull my finger aye...jk

Oops, I think we already did! We were talking about hanging out at a NDáá' and having stew, bread, Azid, 'Ach'íí', 'Áts'áá'!

How much cooler is a hangout like that?

50cal 08-03-2005 02:59 PM

Ok, that is even worse...........leave her alone!!! LOL!!!! Only I can take her to the N'daa...........LOL!!!!! hey bro so you getting ready for this weekend??? Sure wish we could go but most likely got to work........oh well.............

xTekno 08-03-2005 03:11 PM

Don't worry about it Bro! Just watch out for the Chaashzhiní!

Yeah, I'm all packed, loaded up, and hooked up ready to go. I'm working a few more hours today and then heading out this evening. That way, I can be rested and ready to go in the morning for the afternoon gigs (dance performances and Queen "Modern Talent" Contest).

I understand that there have been a lot of improvements at the park (RV hookups with water/electricity) and 200 new vendor booths with all amenities. If you know of any jewelers wanting to sell at the ceremonial, have them call the vendor coordinator.

Granted, the takeover by Huggies and Pampers makes real cotton diapers extinct, but there's nothin' better than having a spare around to throw over the shoulder when nursing. Gives the baby privacy, the public privacy and you, privacy. Any normal guy is gonna look at a breast if it is exposed; I'd be worried about them if they didn't! *L

--WELL MAYBE ITS CUS THEY HAVENT SEEN BREASTFEEDING THAT MUCH CONSIDERING A LOT OF MOMS ARENT DOIN IT ANYMORE...I THINK ITS NATURAL AND SHOULD BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE PUBLIC...AND I DONT BELIEVE IN A BLANKET OVER THE SHOULDER EITHER

Mia Gahdus 08-03-2005 05:00 PM

Plenty Fox & Proud - Do YOU eat under a blanket? Why should an infant have to?

Brown Eyed Gurl - thanks for your reply. Bottles and formula are actually less convenient than breastfeeding.

Here are some links about cow's milk, formula, and breastfeeding....link

Link about allergies to milk....link

I would hope a 'normal' guy would have the decency and respect not to stand around and stare or try and get a peek at a nursing mother's breasts.
Men in my family have been around breastfeeding infants and have NEVER tried to see another woman's breasts when she was feeding her infant. But, then again, they know how to respect a woman and treat all women with dignity and pride. Men and women...that's a whole 'nother thread :LOL

There are plenty of green vegetables that have way more calcium than milk. Yogurt is even better than milk. Milk doesn't cause obesity. Eating a diet high in fat and sugar and not excercising causes obesity.
Also, in order for the body to take in and USE the calcium, it needs a balance of vitamin C, A, D, iron, etc. Milk alone will not provide that for a growing child.
The American Dairy Association is full of misinformation so it can sell and make huge profits.
Native men and women 'back in the day' did not have osteoporosis due to lack of milk, but lack of proper nutrition. And, if we want to look at before the white man came, they didn't have a LOT of the diseases and illnesses that are so prevalent in our society today.

I know that a lot of native's don't have access to good food, so you make do with what you DO have. I hope this will change in the near future.

**jdazmum** 08-03-2005 10:57 PM

I know all about veggies..........nutrients for that matter, it's not like I don't have media access, library access or I didn't go to school for years to not know that? We get the point, you care about us, thanks for the advice, but I'm done with this thread. I rather talk about the Jerry Springer thread then have someone lecture me about nutrients, stuff I already know................peace out.

Just this week on Native America Calling

World Breast Feeding Week:
According to a 2003 government report, 70% of all infants in the U.S. are breastfed. Researchers and health care providers know the benefits of breastfeeding. It builds up resistance to disease and reduces infant mortality. For the mother, studies show women who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast cancer. Native women tend to breastfeed their children longer than the national average age. This is, “World Breastfeeding Week.” It’s an effort to bring more awareness to the importance of breastfeeding. Guests are Barbara Stoddard, Program Manager/ Honoring the Children, Marinah (Indigenous Northern Mexico Tribes, Pima) Midwife/ Sage Midwifery, and Julianne (Eskimo), Woman Infant Child Counselor/ Resource Center for Parents and Children.

You can probably listen to the program after this week in their archives http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/ (Past NAC Programs)

Why do people who claim to know-it-all already, just book out, rather than share knowledge?
There are others on this board who read these threads and are interested in, not only keeping their kids alive, but wanting them to thrive.
