Yes, the humble orange construction barrel is now more numerous than ex-wives on a Dallas rerun. In Dallas every major interstate, US highway, surface street or heavily traveled footpath is home to these brightly colored Texans. Houston has been expanding its suburbs and the I-45 construction zone toward Huntsville for 15 years. Fort Worth is making Toll Roads faster than armadillos can get run over on the interstate. And Austin... Well, has anyone driven then entire way up I-35 to Waco without a detour or delay in the last five years? Please, come to Texas. Spend money; TxDot needs your vacation dollars. And when you're done, please leave. Don't move here without bringing your roads from home. Oh, and take a nice souvenir. Nothing will remind you of your road trip in Texas like a pothole. Just here in Austin, I don't think there's been a time in the last almost 30 years that we haven't had to deal with some kind of major road construction in town. Sad thing is, Texas roads used to be known for its excellent roads. Now you can't even tell the difference when you cross the state line into Oklahoma. And Oklahoma roads are bad. In Tulsa, there's a pothole right around 31st and Lewis that's been there since I was a teenager. No lie! That's what happens when ya never actually repair the road; ya just pave over what's already there. Yes, tourists are more than welcome in Austin. But then they need to go home. Way too many people moving here. ![]()

TxDOT, let me help you out. Before the last ice storm, when5 miles of the right lane of I-35W north of I-30 dissolved into a chain of Martian craters holding hands, you had a pothole problem. Now, I'm not even sure what you would call it. But it could be the next SYFY channel movie -- Potholepocolypse! Last edited by OLChemist; 04-14-2015 at 07:41 PM.. Reason: More attitude needed. |

![]() +++++++++++++++ But that's right, awhile back you took your bike cross-country, somewhere up east if I remember right. Did you end up going through Texas? How was the trip?

Growing up, we had relatives in St. Louis so we went to Missouri quite a bit. When we were young it was a game to shut our eyes and see if we could tell when we crossed the OK/MO border. In hindsight, it really wasn't much of a game, 'cause it was pretty obvious.
But, hittin' that smooth Missouri road also meant we were going to stop at the first store we came to so we could get Squirt. I loved Squirt, and back then you couldn't get it in Oklahoma. ![]()

I moved to Austin in '82 , to Round Rock in '86. When I moved to Round Rock the population was around 5000 . When I moved away from there in '92 the population was 47000 ! Big change !
