We're usually lucky weather-wise whenever our big events are going on. The Austin Food and Wine Festival and Eeyore's Birthday Party were this weekend. It was looking like they were gonna be rained out. Nope! Not beautiful weather, but the bad weather stayed away for most of it. Ugh. Roaches. Coming from Oklahoma, I knew all about flying ants. But when I first moved to Texas I had no idea that roaches could fly! I was living in this [email protected] little house off of Eastcrest. I woke up one night and there was this HUGE roach crawling up the wall. It was so big I swear I could hear its footsteps while it was climbing. I got up to take care of it, and right when I was close enough to swat it...it turned around, stretched out its wings, and flew directly at my face! I was so surprised and shocked I'm afraid I screamed like a little girl. ![]() ![]() For those who aren't familiar with it - Eeyore's Birthday Party ![]() ![]()

I know! I learned they could fly under similar circumstances. I was living in the now long gone grad student housing at my Alma Mater. It was an ancient vaguely space themed, Jetsonish 1960's motel. The walls had been painted with a fleur-de-lys patterned roller, with one half dipped in dark turquoise paint the other half in burnt orange. The pattern had been applied with little regard to the orientation of the lilies. The building had three shared kitchens. And terrifyingly deep turquoise shag carpeting. It was a time capsule that just needed Austin Powers lounging next to the vaguely green pool. It also had very low rents, even by post-S&L collapse Houston rental standards. It was very popular with first years coming in from other countries or arriving in Houston one day before classes started (me). I was cooking my lunch of Ramen Surprise when my next door neighbor came into the kitchen. He put a pan of chicken and almond curry on the stove top to reheat. We were talking while my noodles cooked. Suddenly the "almonds" sprouted wings and flew out of the pan. He just kind of waved them away and started eating. I ran screaming -- like a little boy -- to my room. I had an apartment, far away, by nightfall. I threw all my food away. Moved nothing in cardboard boxes. Sprayed everything. Took all my clothing and bedding to the new place via the "World's Largest Coin-Op Washerteria." I bought a case of Combat traps, just in case. I had no furniture. I slept on the floor for four months until my parents gave me a bed. I didn't care. No flying almonds. |

Spiders don't bother me. Nor do snakes. Scorpions on the other hand...
![]() When I was a teenager, one of my first jobs was with a collection agency. The building the agency was in was infested with scorpions! The (unofficial) dresscode was boots. Luckily for the women, gauchos and boots were in style at the time. And even for the men, pants were tucked into our boots. They were everywhere. Running across the floor. In desk drawers. In the bathroom - be sure to look before you sit. And when they'd mate - OMG - the babies!!! Other than that, it wasn't a bad place to work. At least a couple times a week the owner's wife would shut the place down early and take us all to happy hour - her treat!

We have heat warnings for the South, too. Supposed to be really close to 100 the next couple of days. Throw in the humidity, and you have heat indexes around 110. For us, that's steamy.

![]() Can you imagine being someplace like Disney, in this heat, and having to wait for 2 hours in line for a ride? Tourists will start dropping like flies.
