my redneck pool heats up all day in the blazing sun and the top foot is hot-tub-hot by early evening. Stirring up the water doesn't do much other than bring the temperature down a bit, so by sunrise it is still warm.

maybe today, all I need to do is add vegetables and have a piping-hot stew ready by sundown.

Mosquitos, bees, bugs, flies, and whatever lands in the water. Maybe even a javelina or a skunk.

not really ... the haboob hits metro-phoenix and dies out. I am 40+ miles north in the extreme northern end of the Sonoran Desert that has hills covered with lush desert shrubbery, trees, and plants where dust can't be kicked up.

besides, I have a cover for the pool and it gets very hot in the afternoon.

I did not care for the cicadas when they would crawl out of the ground. They are so noisy. I remember those in Phoenix back in the day.

But you have to respect them for who they are. In the emergence stories of my people, the cicada was the first being to enter into this world and he had to prove that he was worthy of being here before the rest were allowed to come into this world from below. The marks on his back show where he had to insert a sword into his body and make it come out the other side twice.
