With gastric bypass they cut away most of the stomach and create a pouch. The bands are reversible and adjustable, and not such a complicated operation.

yeah the band just goes around the stomach...gastric bypass actually cuts your stomach removing most of it. Kind of skurry but I think if you are at that point where you want to do this, you've given thought, read up on it and are willing to follow to the T, what aftercare is all about. I lost a cousin to Gastric bypass...she was like 350 + and it helped but she didn't follow the aftercare orders.....she died a couple of years later and weighed like 94 lbs....

One of the biggest culprits of them all are the processed sugars, those typically made form corn, such as "High Fructose Corn Syrup" (Fructose/Sucrose).

As far as the immediate drop in levels after surgery, I'd venture to say that it would be a result of our body responding to the surgery, technically your body would see it as an injury and thus devote resources to healing itself.

I'd elaborate more but an emergency at work just popped up and I have to fix it, grrrr.. but I like where this thread is going.

One thing I've learned as a diabetic is that you can eat anything you want... yes I said anything, within moderation. It's all about making good choices,and exercise. I'm a buck eighty now and 5'7" and my doctor said my BMI is good right now... She's no real concerned about my weight and my A1C is good right now. I exercise just about every day, there aren't many days I don't. I'm not ripped, but I like the way I look with out a shirt! My wife enjoys watching me do my pull ups every night, point is I fight with diabetes every day and so far I'm keeping it in check. Not everyone is the same and can do the same exercises, but we can all exercise. I'm 44 and in the best shape of my life right now...

I agree to an extent. There are some foods I absolutely can not eat oatmeal. A "small" bowl (even a couple of bites) makes my blood sugar shoot up. Oranges and orange juice are no longer a part of my diet b/c they do the same thing! So I think it depends on the person and listening to your body and you sugars to see what you can handle!

My uncle had diabetes. He was a teenager, I believe, when he was diagnosed after eating a whole box of chocolates and going into a coma. It saved him from serving in WWII, but that was probably the only up side to it.

I was told by my doctor that I had extremely high tri-glycerides (324, normal being 135), and if I didn't cut down on the sugar, I could go the same way as my uncle. Obviously, I needed to change my diet and be more active. I seem to go up and down on that. Artificial sweeteners are pretty good for satisfying my gargantuan "sweet tooth", but I am lazy and don't exercise like I ought. Hopefully, I will never get to the point of needing gastric by-pass surgery, but I guess if it were the only way to save my life...

Remember, you'll need to cut down on sugar and anything metabolizing into sugar: namely starches!

And just start getting little 5-15 minutes bouts of walking, or other easy exercizes in each day. You'll feel so much better, to boot!

I don't think I would go for the surgery unless I was morbidly obese. I've been told that our bodies will take care of us as long as we take care of them. So long as I am physically able to exercise then that is what I do for my body/health.

My Father is diabetic who takes insulin twice a day and my brother is also diabetic but is not on insulin "yet". I find it really frustrating to see these two cheating all the time. My Dad is famous for chocolate bars under his drivers seat and a case of pepsi under the back seat so he thinks people don't know he's cheating. Sadly, I believe these two will go through many bad experiences because of their poor choices and lack of exercise.

My Dad is white so it is affecting the rest of the population and I think this is why the governments are now finally starting to pay attention. I am thankful that we have a local Aboriginal organization that is spreading the word and educating our people about the risk and impacts of diabetes. My sister works there so I am hoping one day she can get through to our Dad and Brother about the severity and implications of their choices.

I found a new love....The Arc Trainer....I thought I was all bad using the eliptical....until I get there last night and all of them are taken....so I had to use an arc trainer. OMG, it kicks your bum BUT it gives you a great hard workout! Going to go another round with it tonight!!!!! It's sooo great to see so many natives going to the new YMCA! Poncas are making a life change to the healthier!!! Okay.....and the other 5 tribes up here. *L* Kaw, Osage, Pawnee, Otoe, Tonkawa......
