Recovering from Sprains

I had an accident last weekend and ended up with a MCL Sprain (Mideal Collateral Ligiment Sprain......and torn meniscus - cartalage in knee). Ouch. Not fun. I am in a splint and having to use crutches for two weeks, then an MRI and visit to Orthopedic surgeon to see if the ligment and tears will require surgery.
My husband is going to be an AD at an upcoming pow wow in September and wants me to be there to represent our family.

Soooooo, my questions are to you......how did you recover and build your muscles back up after your sprain? And when attending pow wows during the healing period did you still dress out and take part in pow wows, even if it meant just dancing in place on the side?

Be kind..........I'm still on pain meds!!!

Two surgeries on my knee from work accidents. I have replacement ligaments in my knee made from hamstring material harvested out of my leg during surgery.

You had a twisting fall, or stress to knee? Be very careful, keep that knee braced up to prevent further twisting movement.

Go ahead and attend the PW to support your husband, do be careful, and don't hurt your GOOD knee because you are favoring the hurt knee, It happens.

Physical Therapy helps healing and recovery, especially stretching the leg, and electro-stimulus of the knee muscles.

The surgery they are doing now is amazing, my first old school surgery took forever to rebound.

My second, more recent surgery actually improved the knee, even though more severe injury. I have a 19% disability rating, but still play tag with my grandkids.

Heal up!

Thanks, Amigo.......I appreciate hearing that. I've never had any surgery so was a little worried about that. And if it involves physical therapy that will be great.
Hey, EP!! Yea, I was thinking at least I could wear my shawl....maybe dress out.....but just kind of stay on the sidelines (near a chair don't you know!! LOL).
I'm hoping a lot of this will be resolved before September and be on my way to recovery.
Been wondering how other folks have dealt with dealing with it.....so was glad to hear from Amigo and EP.

Hi Nancyjo, hope the ankle is feeling better... when I smashed up my shoulder in a diving accident, the docs all agreed that the best way to assist the ligaments and soft tissue was to get straight to the physio-terrorist for ultrasound treatment (it helps break up the scar tissue so the tissues move smoothly) and also to do a about a 6 visits to a Registered massage therapist to do deep muscle massage( gets the blood flowing to promote healing). Talk to your doc about what's best for you.

Hope you make it to the pow-wow.

ETA: I have also found that using Leukotape really helps ease the pain and gets me moving again when I overdo the sports and injure myself... you might want to check that out as well...

I've heard about Arnica.......several people here at work use it. I may go down to the health food store and get some to try.
Actually, it's my knee that's sprained.......it's in a splint right now for two weeks. I've been able to put some weight on it the past couple of days, but it still feels like it's going to give out....so I'll give it the two weeks.
Yaahl....great advice!! What is Leukotape? and where can it be purchased?
I am going to go to the pow wow.........I'll dress out, but will probably stay pretty close to the sidelines. I just want to make sure hubby has the family support and know's we're there to support him. I think my son is going to try and go and it will be great to have him around.

A Physio terrorist should be able to get you some or it's available online.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor

BUT, you say you have a meniscus tear. Don't risk tearing it more. When you walk, use the front or ball of the foot on the injured leg. Avoid planting your heel, and turning or twisting.

Pivot on your good foot, and plan all your movements.

The doctor may be able to sew up that meniscus tear if it is small, so keep it small, protect your knee.

Good thing is the human body is designed to heal...but not as quick as we would like LOL

Sorry to sound bossy, but I've been through this...a bit worse though. Ouch!

If you scout youtube, you'll find a taping demo for the particular injury you have, I really love this stuff. Since I discovered it a few years ago, I haven't had to take any pain pills for the injuries I have.

Thanks for the advice, Amigo........and I don't care that your not a doctor, sometimes the best advice comes from the people that have actually dealt with the injury. The splint they have me in makes it to when I'm walking with crutches I can only touch my toe to the floor. The ER doc told me not to put any weight on it, just use it to touch and kind of balance. He also told me not to walk anymore on it than necessary the first 48 hours and ice 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off to get the swelling down. So I followed his advice, and later read up on this kind of sprain and tear and was glad I had followed his advice (even tho at the time I thought I should go on to work that first two days, but the pain was so bad I did stay home!!). So I'm hoping the tear will be small. The ER doc said I had arthritis in that knee so that kind of made it a little more complicated because it would make that tear worse......but I'm hoping it's not too bad.
I guess I'm going to stay out of competeting for the next year or so....which is okay......to give this time to heal. I just want to get it back in good dancing shape and get back into the circle as soon as I can. I've pretty much decided for a while I'll just have to go to pow wows and maybe not dance as much at first until it heals and I get some physical therapy.
I'm going to try that tape, Yaahl.....I ordered some of it from Amazon. I'll go check out the video......once again, is it not amazing what you can learn on the internet??!!!
You know it's kind of amazing there hasn't been more injuries to dancers at pow wows........we've danced in some places outside where there would be holes and dips, and I always kind of worried about someone falling or spraining an ankle or knee. I didn't sprain mine at a pow wow, I did it at home........but I've often thought about how that could happen when we're dancing. I used to pack along some ace bandages for my son (traditional dancer) just in case he stepped wrong.

Something to Consider...

Nancy J - You ahve asked a great question.

As a doctor of chiropractic for the past 23 years, my recommendation to you would be... GO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR. Most people think of DC's (doctors of chiropractic) as "back pain" doctors and although we are really good at that aspect, it is about 1% of our capabilities. You might recall the world's greatest cyclists with the initials of L.A.? Winning the Tour de France several times? - well guess what? He atributes a great deal of his physical abilities to a D.C. named Dr. Jeff Spencer. And Mary Jo, if a D.C. is good enough for him, trust me, a D.C. can help you. Yes you may (MAY) still need surgical intervention at some point, you can recover much quicker and to a higher degree IF you utilize the knowledge and skills of a trained doctor of chiropractic to help the healing process. Out education is a five year accredited college. The hours we spend is legion. We've been around since 1895... that 1895!! Just as an FYI, the AMA encorporated in 1897.

I could do a days long lecture based in clinical science that supports what I am saying, but your immediate question is, "What can I do about it?" So here it is... GO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR - and if you need a referral, let me know and I will help you find one close to you.

I take care of people from cradle to grave, all shapes, all sizes and all conditions; from world class gymnists to grandmas and babies.

I am also a Northern Traditional Dancer and as such, I know how much punishment the body can take - I'm 62 years old, on ZERO medications and this is the way it can be for anyone who approaches their lifestyle in a way the honors the Creator's gift of life and health. I've been blown up, Agent Oranged and made it through the 1960's-70's, so if I can do it, anyone can. The one constant in my life in regards to my health; I have always been adjusted by a chiropractor no less than once a week for the past 30 years. You have nothing to lose and much to gain.

Metakewe Oyasin,

PS
Go to the pow wow - good for your spirit, which is part of your healing.

Thanks!! I appreciate the advice!! I had not thought of going to a chriopractor. I will ask around my friends and see who they suggest in my area. I live west of the D/FW area in Texas if you have someone you'd like to suggest.

Saw the orthopedic doctor yesterday, looks like I'm going to have to have a knee replacement. The meniscus is severly torn, and not repairable....I've got bone on bone on the inside of my leg joint. Outside edge is healthy and normal, but the sprain caused the meniscus to tear severly on the inside medial meniscus. So not to happy about that......but the doc is trying injections in my knee to help with the pain. He said I was pretty young to be having this kind of surgery. But with as bad a sprain as it was, it is unavoidable. The doctor is a highly recommended orthopedic sports surgeon, and I was told he does everything he can to avoid surgery, but guess this time it's just necessary. So kind of sad about that........but eager to get it back to normal. Probably try to put it off for a short time, as I'm dealing with my Moma being ill and in and out of the hospital. So the doc's being pretty awesome about helping out on that.
So now I'm really working at getting some recovery tips to start working on. Anyone had this kind of surgery and recovery???

I think I saw you 49'n and fell ina hole thats how you got hurt lol teasing

My mama had her knees replaced she was a good girl did all her exercises even pushed to do more when asked. Man we couldnt keep up with her she was litterly all over the place I remember her saying she had no idea she was in so much pain untill she had them replaced and was reminded what it was not to hurt every single day she had learned to cope with it.

Yup, EP, it was that dad gum '49!!!! LOL!!

A Lady I work with just had her second knee replacement surgery Monday......she told me "honestly, the first two days suck.....then it gets better and better". So, I think I can handle it. She said the rehab is the key to a better recovery and getting back on your feet faster. So I'll be working in that direction.
Who knew just stepping down wrong could cause so much trouble!!!
I'm aiming to wait until Moma's well, and then hubby has been the AD and then will get serious about the surgery.
Thanks, Yaahl.
