This last weekend at Iowa City they had a special honoring song for her and then had a blanket dance... they got over $1,400 to go to the family.

We were given the privilege of singing an honor song for her at a small powwow in Centralia on Saturday. One of her hometownfolk was there. It was understandibly difficult for him to talk about her. We know her spirit will continue to watch over her children.

The family wants to say thank you

My mom was able to speak to Lori's uncle today and he expressed the warmest thanks. They are overwhelmed by Indian Country's response of love. He asked her to pass this info on:

PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAMES AND RETURN ADDRESSES ON ALL DONATIONS

The family would like to send thanks to individuals and powwow committees. They ask that we remain patient as they receive our gifts and thank us.

Okay, now I have to go somewhere and cry a little.

My mom said her uncle was just sooo nice and warm.

Furor Over Renaming A Mountain
PHOENIX, April 15, 2003

Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano drew criticism Monday from some Republican lawmakers after asking a state board to rename a mountain peak to honor an American Indian woman killed in the war with Iraq.

Some Republican lawmakers claim Napolitano is "politicizing" the death of Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, a Hopi Tribe member from Tuba City who was killed in Iraq last month. Many American Indians find the name of Phoenix's Squaw Peak offensive and have tried for years to rename it.

"It seemed to me (an opportunity) to make lemonade out of a lemon," said Napolitano, who considers the name an embarrassment.

Republican state Rep. John Allen said Napolitano inappropriately merged renaming the peak with honoring Piestewa. The state should deal with the issues separately and honor all Arizonans who died in the war, he said.

"They have taken an individual who has done a great service for their country and tried to use that person posthumous to get a political end they couldn't get themselves," Allen said. "That's wrong."

Even though the chairman of the Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board has threatened to block her plan, Napolitano said she will continue to push the name change.

Man-made features can be named even after the living, but state and federal policies on geographic titles say there must be a five-year waiting period after a person's death before the name can be used.

Tim J. Norton, who heads the geographic board, has said the board shouldn't abandon the guidelines because renaming geographic features shouldn't be an emotional issue. He couldn't be reached for comment late Monday.

Critics claim "squaw" is derived from an Indian word for female genitalia, although some linguists disagree.

More support and opposition for Piestewa Peak
THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003

Mary Helen Clancy: "The political hysteria surrounding the attempt to rename Squaw Peak after Pfc. Lori Piestewa is just short of ludicrous."

Jacqueline Chee: "I truly believe that renaming Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak would be most honorable to her family and a reminder to other Native Americans who reside in the Valley."

Don Schreiber: "People too often become caught in the hysteria of the moment and make wrong decisions. Apparently, the governor and her spokeswoman are a couple of these people."

Steve Weatherburn: "Piestewa Peak is a wonderful idea, and it is surprising that anyone should take issue with it."

Some Ariz. Republicans unhappy with Piestewa plans
THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003

An Arizona Republican says Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano is setting a "Clintonesque" tone for her administration by pushing to rename a mountain and highway for Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq.

Napolitano wants Squaw Peak and Squaw Peak Freeway changed. Of the push, state Representative John Allen told the Associated Press: "It's going to be a very Clintonesque style in the sense where you take advantage, no matter whose grief it is."

Meanwhile, The Arizona Republic reports that Napolitano's proposal will come before the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names. The board is meeting today and will take public comments on the name change. The Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Hualapai Nation and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe have submitted letters of support.

Napolitano, narrowly elected last year, has made an effort to reach out to tribes. The state signed onto an amicus brief in support of tribal rights in last month's Inyo County v. Bishop Paiute Tribe case, the first time state governments have sided with tribes at the Supreme Court.

Editorial: Don't wait five years to change name
THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003

The Arizona Daily Star in an editorial today says there is no reason why Squaw Peak shouldn't be changed to Piestewa Peak in honor of Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq.

The paper criticizes opponents who accuse Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) of "politicizing" Piestewa's death. "[I]t is the opposition that seems to be practicing the political demagoguery," the paper responds.

The paper also says the name can be changed now, in reference to state and federal rules governing geographic names for deceased individuals. "We note that the five-year waiting period is not a law. Rather it is a policy. As such, it can be waived."

Column: What's Better - Squaw Peak or Piestewa Peak?
THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003

"We dishonor the memory of Lori Piestewa with our pettiness. She put on a uniform and went to war and was killed, leaving behind a loving family and two small children. In return we waste the opportunity to honor her sacrifice and mend a bleeding insult by depreciating her life and pouring salt on the wound.

We do this by making complicated that which is simple. By allowing ego to replace common sense. By choosing prejudice over prudence. By foolishly taking our eye off the ball. To resolve this, we only need to ask ourselves a few simple questions."

Squaw Peak highway changed in honor of Piestewa
FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003

The Arizona Transportation Board voted 5-2 on Thursday to immediately rename Squaw Peak Freeway in honor of Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq.

Another state board voted to rename Squaw Peak for Piestewa, 23. The U.S. Board of Geographic Names will consider the change this coming Thursday "because there's been so much controversy about it," The Arizona Republic reported.

Piestewa Peak

:Angel2 I'm calling it Piestewa Peak now because I believe it will happen. I encourage all you that have been blessed with a little extra to send it to the Lori Piestewa Memorial Fund established by the Wells Fargo Bank, I know they are in Cali and AZ, but don't know where else.

Also I spoke with Lori's Uncle Percy and he said to thank everyone that has sent cards and letters or donated money. The money will be spent on Lori's two children, the memorial fund will be split for upkeep now and the rest put away for college.

He said they are over-whelmed with the outpouring of love from the Ndn and non-Ndn public and they will send thank-you's to each and every one who sent a card or call or in anyway to expressed they love to the family and Lori's children.

Luv ya, comchocldy

So be it....

Anyways, she as One represents all Natives on this great Big Continent....

Both women and Men Natives....... ! It is about time the DOT took off that nassy sign ( Name ) off that Peak and Freeway... I am sure it was done on purpose in the past to degrade Natives, surely it was not to honor Women...

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names won't consider renaming Squaw Peak in Arizona to Piestewa Peak until 2008.

The board has a five-year waiting period on name changes for deceased individuals.

How do you pronounce Piestewa? Count the ways
FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2003

By now, everyone is familiar with the Piestewa name, which means "pool of still waters" in Hopi. Just how do you say it, The Arizona Republic asks.

The correct pronunciation is "pie-ESS-tuh-wah." First Lady Laura Bush may have said it that way, the paper says, but otherwise she "stumbled over the name several times" during a visit to the Navajo Nation yesterday.

"It's pronounced Squaw Peak," says an Arizona man, referring to the controversy over renaming the landmark Piestewa Peak.
