This past weekend at Odawa, I was running late to all three Grand Entries (as usual)...and I had to braid my hair in the truck. The window was open cuz I had to look in that big ol' sideview mirror, the car was going like 400KM's an hour and to top it all off, it was the windiest day of the century. My braids turned out lookin' like Medusa's snakey azz hair.

At Pow-wow

I typically get dressed at the pow-wow. I wear a pair of shorts and tee- shirt under my outfit so I just dress in that after my shower that way I can get dressed outside with plenty of room just before the pow-wow starts

Peeps tend to think bad about non-Native's wearing traditional regalia. I mean if it's just a ribbon shirt and moccosins with the furry lining--fine. But I am not so sure it would be cool for you to bust a bustle, you know what I'm saying?

In any case, to answer your question, I used to just dance intertribals and would in full regalia. It's perfectly fine, some people choose not to compete.

my reglia so far is a shirt (mattreil) that was gifted to me a breif cloth(sp?) mocsins and a chocker. Some times face paint but not always. I am wondering after reading on here about how some poeple feel about whites, and i dont want to ofend/piss off anyone.

Ok lemme give you a word of advice, just because I'm in a good mood this evening.

Just be who are you are, don't try to act Indian, this ain't Halloween it's a lifetime deal. If you are trying to be respectful at powwows and wear a cloth shirt, some jewellery and moccosins, that's great. But don't go off on the face paint, feathers or pretty much any other tip. These hold signifigance to the dancer and have meaning, not just to look Indian you know what I'm saying? Keep it real, that's all.

Oh and another thing, for your sake, I hope Singing Eagle doesn't see this thread. ;)

I like to put on all my cloth and buckskin regalia at home, maybe a few other things. Just makes things quicker than trying to find a place at the powwow or hiding behind a car door. :p At the powwow all I gotta do is throw on the other pieces like my bustle, roach, breastplate, etc; I am notorious for running on Indian time so this way I won't miss Grand Entry.......as much. :Chatter

Okay, I personally don't have a problem with non-natives dancing. As long as they do it RIGHT. No one starts off with a full set of regalia, it is something painstakenly made and aquired over time. Each piece is important or even sacred in most cases to the dancer. Like Jibby said, a shirt, choker and some mocs won't offend. But a half *** attempt at regalia will definitely send the wrong message to people, especially if you are trying to dance. (A WHOLE other matter entirely). If you really wish to dance you've got a way to go. Both in the making of your regalia and learning the ways of dancing and powwowing. If you are non-native and are dancing thats fine. What is not is SAYING you are. Or participating in the powwow when your regalia is all chewed up. It just shows ignorance and disrespect. So for now, the shirt (I'm assuming its a ribbon shirt), choker and mocs with a good ole pair of jeans won't o anyone any harm. But leave the facepaint out. Save that for when you are ready to dance properly. Just my 2 cents. The sad truth of it is, if you are white dancing native, you are gonna get crap about it every now and then. Don't make it worse by lying about your heritage and having half assed regalia, or not knowing how to dance properly. Have your little duckies in a row to reduce friction for yourself.

Which are you??
I put my leggings, breech on at home. The rest (as I acquire them) will be put on at the powwow. I think it's a bit difficult to drive while wearing a bustle *G*

It also depends (for me) if Im going to dance, or just show my 'colors' so to speak, as well as if it's a regular powwow, or if it's something the NAIA group I belong to is puttin together.

but that isn't the law of the land, just somethin I do.

________

This is the reality of it all. . . .

Powwows are held in all types of locations: Athletic fields, gymnasiums, arenas, convention centers, cultural centers, hotels, large tents, parks, arbors, traditional powwow grounds, "the boonies," etc. etc.

It would be unreal to say that a person dresses at one place or another - exclusively.

Real powwow people who follow the powwow trail adopt to where the powwow is.

For instance how many of you have dressed in: a public restroom, a motel, a tent, a tipi, an RV, a snag's room or a car that is stuck in traffic?

THIS IS THE REAL LIFE OF A PERSON WHO POWWOWS
