Hi There...

Hi, I am Rosie and new to Pow Wow. I am wasn't raised with the opportunity to know about my heritage due to location and etc. My uncle is the one who back tracked our history and took the steps in learning about who we were. I bugged him to tell me about it... but living in Northern California, I didn't get much of a change to experience anything. When he had his bike accident, my daughter and I went to Arizona to help him. While there, my daughter and I were invited to do our first sweat. It was an experience I will never forget. Since then my uncle has passed away... and I was left back where I started, back in California and knowing nothing. Anyway... I'm here out of curiousity... and thought I would introduce myself... Hi I'm Rosie...

Thank you for the welcome Furiously-Fancy.

Joe's Dad - I can come out and ride my bike... lol. Thank you for the welcome. Not sure what answers I am looking for, don't have questions yet... heh.

My interest/hobbies change all time... it was cars for a bit until mine decided it was going to stop working. heh If you don't mind me asking. What part of California are you in?

Joe's Dad 02-09-2005 10:39 PM

Between LA and Santa Barbara

CHEROSAGE 02-13-2005 02:43 AM

Good to have you visit with us. Hope you will have a good time. I see you know your tribe. We have just about every tribe represented on this site. Maybe someone can give you some info about your family. I knew a very kind Yaqui elder. He is now passed but still a good memory.

Please ask any (?) and someone can try to answer it for you.

curiousity 02-13-2005 12:17 PM

welcome to the site. you will have questions later and there are a lot of good people to answer those questions. enjoy the site.

R0SIE 02-13-2005 08:46 PM

Joe's Dad - I am from the Bay Area.

Cherosage - Thank for your the Welcome. Hopefully, I will be able to learn more. I feel so ignorant when it comes to my heritage, and it bothers me. I wasn't able to get much informations from my uncle before he passed. He was the only one close with my Great Grandfather. It would be nice to find some contacts near me, but I have no idea where to do.

Curiousity - Also thank you for the warm welcome. I am glad I found this site. I was a little nervous about posting here... I am glad you all are friendly afterall... (I read a few of the other first posts... "White Gal Question", "Hello"... LOL).

Joe G 02-13-2005 10:16 PM

Hi Rosie...try this one here: www.pascuayaqui-nsn.gov may be at least a starting point...good luck...
I see you are in the bay area...have been there many times...have relatives in the region..as well...nice area...but too expensive!!!

Joe's Dad,
I know how corny that sounded but I figured that Rosie would happen to known my long dead father. It was a one in a million shot since I found out he died in 1987. So, I'll just have to go on with my miserable life, lol. I hope that I don't sound too cynical but since this is the cyberworld, we take all chances we wouldn't otherwise, right? And since my mother mentioned that my father was Yaqui (she might've been lying to make me feel better) which I haven't figured into my halfbredness since I'm enrolled with the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe already.

Joe's Dad 02-15-2005 09:25 PM

My Bad!

Dude, I apologize....Just thought it might have been one of your QSW questions! Hey I hope ROSIE is that one in a million chance. Sorry.

Don't apologize for it just happened that my question would sound like a QSW question and that's the way I wanted it to happen. I'm so twisted that even the truth is quirky, lol.

R0SIE 02-16-2005 11:02 PM

Thank you for the compliments on my hair... a few years back my hair stylist disappeared, and well I haven't cut it since... heh.

colonah04 - I've seen that site... I think I've read the whole thing from front to back. And, you're right the bay area is expensive... but I've been here all my life, so it's home. And thank you for the Welcome.

QuickSilverWade - Okay I'll try not to not ask stupid questions... hehe... but I might not be able to help it... hehe... be nice... please... heh What is a QSW Question? I am sorry, I am not familar with the last name Veloz. I think I've seen it before but not sure where. Did you father live in California?Sorry... <img src="http://www.powwows.com/gathering/images/icons/icon9.gif">

AngelFeather - so how did you do it? How did you learn more?

Okay, so here are my questions of the day... How does one register with a tribe?

I decided to start looking into to books for to read to learn more... there are so many out there... how can you tell what is real and what is the New Age junk?

Rosie,
I heard that Mr. Veloz (I've never referred to him as my father since I've never laid eyes on him) was living in the Bay area during his living years but I've never had the inclination to make contact. But since you're Yaqui, I figured that there might be a one in a million chance that we're related, lol.

Defining a QSW question means that I'm trying to ruffle feathers and cause turmoil and chaos which is what my nature entails me to do, lol. I'm the instigator and behind the scenes troublemaker but I promise not to ruffle your feathers, okay?

Enrolling into a tribe may not be easy since you must have practically your entire family tree enrolled also at least in my case. I am at an advantage and so are the others who are enrolled because of our family connections. We can easily phone our cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents who reside on the reservation at any time. In your case and with such beautful hair, you wouldn't have any trouble making friends at the powwows. The Northern California area has numerous powwows practically every weekend so you shouldn't have any trouble making contact with the local native population.

The new age junk is out there in abundance. The rule of thumb is that one never talks about spiritual matters on the internet. There are so many rules regarding our protocol and etiquette that the best way to start is by reading the past threads on www.powwows.com . Also be aware of people using names that have "wolf" in them. Except of course the exceptional Southern Straight dancer "Ben Wolf!"

R0SIE 02-17-2005 10:24 PM

Hmmm I will have to look into Mr. Veloz... and you said he past in 1987. Do you know what city? You never know - we could be long lost cousin... heh. My grandmother was Lopez before marrying.

That's what I thought a QSW question was, but just wanted to make sure... lol. Okay good... and I will do my best not to ask stupid questions.

My uncle was in the process when he died... he said once he did he was going to help me... but it never happened... what is the difference of being registered or not? I don't understand. Someone told me it was just away for the goverment to track everything... of course he wasn't registered - and not by chose.

Agghhhh thank you. I wouldn't know where to start at a powwow... I would be nervous. I could see it now... my daughter and I holding hands... standing there like lost ducks, looking for our momma.

I've seen some around Northern California but not near enough for me to get too... not any yet.

I think that's a great idea, to start with old postings... I read a few before I posted... I think I need to go through I read a lot more. What is wrong with people using names that have WOLF in them?

I'm supposing that Mr. Veloz must've died in San Francisco leaving his wife Rachel Veloz.

By being registered with a tribe one can receive certain perks with the government. So, all I can say is that when somebody says that it is a way for the government to control us means they probably aren't registered. Oh, also during my dying last years I can go back home for free commodities.

Not all names with Wolf are wannabees but I like these last names better: Crazy Thunder, No Ear, Scabby Robe and Beautiful Bald Eagle.

* what he refers to ROSIE is that there are alot of people that CLAIM to have knowledge of things Pertaining to be Native or may claim even to be related to you... why do they do it? I dunno but it happens.. So just be careful in your research and who you talk to, you dont want to be lead down the wring path.
