Good thread. There's ways of honoring our Cali tribes buy setting up booths and selling items at these powwows. I hear what you're all saying about the big times but we can't educat if other tribal people don't know of our cali life we have to get away from the pan indian view in the Cali citys. www.pacwesttraders.com

Hey there...just wanted to say hi to my fellow cali people out there...I was at Pechanga and kinda disappointed when I saw the signs for bird dancers and bear dancers but never saw any around...they did have thier peon games(stick games) going strong on Sat. Night...that was fun to go and hang out at for a while... 6 fires going...nice singing got really intense later on...I wish someone would plan more gatherings...those are what I grew up on and miss...the ones over at Tule River especially...I saw someone mention Kule Loklo...thats the roundhouse I grew up dancing at...miss those days since the strawberry festival and acorn festivals there have been taken over since Lanny passed away...they are just not the same anymore...so yeah, there is a big time this weekend up on the coast...I dont want to post the info on here but send me a message and I'll let you know where...

California tribal people whats your opinions on the states recommendation of having representacion at state level cauceses? If it passes the tribes of california can finally get our say. Who should be selected tribal chairs or should tribal people across the state get to vote? If this passes California could lead the other states in getting other tribes in same boat.

Ya that would be good, but scary at the same time....too many corupt tribal leaders, and in-fighting, and nepatisim. I think you have to have some kinda voted-in election thing. I would hate for the Cali state government to see how bad some of our leaders are...yes I know there are bad white elceted officals...but we do not our in-fighting leaders to get in government where they can cuase damge to othe rtribes or bands or familes just cuz they have beef with them...so we just have to be carefull how/who gets in.

I'm a fellow n8tv cali indian too and agree with most points on this thread but as a mix of Azteca too I think having the Aztecas share is a way to continuing the education. If you know of any cultural history the n8tv of Mexico, Central, South America face the same prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination and hatred as the n8tvs here in cali as other states with n8tvs.

I'm not tribal from cali but any tribe would be lucky to have state level represnetacion. Living here in cali I see allot of needs that aren't being represented for any of the tribes that have members here.

I'm a "recognized" member of the Tule River Yokuts, My grandmother was disenrolled after leaving the rez to live on her grandfather's (non-ndn) ranch closer to town. I live in San Diego where I was born and raised, and here most of the powwows at least have peon (traditional gambling game) and many of the reservations have youth groups where they learn the traditional songs and dances. I volunteer at the Barona powwow every year and they do have traditional dancing and singing, it's just not every year. Sycuan always has peon, and the local dances and songs are everyday before the main grand entry. Morongo, Soboba, riverside county powwows and a few of the Northern San Diego county powwows all have the local traditions represented. My favorite Bird singing event I've been to was at Morongo where they had a huge bird singing competition and I heard songs I'd never heard before, it was amazing! San Diego powwow season starts Labor day weekend at Barona and every weekend after that there is a powwow at Syquan, Morongo, and Soboba, come down for the fun!!!

INDIO POWWOW has Bird Singing & Dancing each year, San Manuel also.

City of Chula Vista will have their first powwow ever on August 11 & 12, 2012...hope to get Kumeyaay Bird Singers for this one to respect the local tribal traditions.
