what's wrong with dancing barefoot?? I been known about half way through the day to loose my moccs somewhere and dance in my barefeet.. unless I am the head dancer then I keep the darn things on through the whole day, or unless Grandmother Toni is watching.

You probably can't dance bareffot at some places because someone might "sue" you if they stub or cut their foot on a rock. You know how things are today people will sue you for anything. LOL thats my guess, I highly doubt being sanitary outdoors is too much of a concern,

OK, I have to bite.
Dakota, what area do you live in? Do you live near a Rez or other NDN populated area? If so, go to some dances and observe the festivities. Have fun and see if this is what you really want to do.

Many dances today are not carded. Some are, meaning that you must have some form of NDN ID. The Committee will address the needs to be able to dance if this is the case. This is usually a BIG contest dance. Some may do it to keep out the RifRaf,,,, you can still go and watch(observe).

This wanting to dance thing could be a bit expensive and time consuming. Do you even have an idea of how you would like to dance? Does your family have a specific type of dance or are you just speaking in general?

What is it you really want to know and how do you want to approach the goal?

Well, I feel like an idiot. I didn't even notice the date. I thought website had been hacked. To paraphrase Bill Engvall, somebody hand me my sign.

Anyone can dance during the inter-tribals. Even my hubby came out at the last dance to dance with Timmy Tiger and me. I told him I would smack him if he put me off my groove.

A wise old Indian once told me why we do not dance barefoot. The white man loves to drink beer and wine and trash the land with litter of all sorts. There is also a good chance that some of the white mans trash is just below the surface of the grass. That means that broken glass from beer and soda bottles can be there and no one ever knows until someone cuts up a foot. Steel beer can tabs rust causing cuts and such as well. Many powwow comitties also use the no bare feet thing as a safety thing. If you cut your foot in their circle, they are responsable for your care. It's there event. Even if there is a sign that states or the MC announces "No Bare Feet", The comittee is still responsable for any accident in the circle or powwow grounds even if they have no fault. It's a white law thing.

An old Omaha grass dancer told me another story of why we do not dance in bare feet. In the old days the grass dancers use to make the circle by dancing down the tall grass. Within this grass, there were usually snakes and such that could bite. One wrong step and you could be seeing your maker. Ouch!!!! Waring mocs or other protective footware like Timberland boots would help protect the feet of the grass dancer and keep him safe from snake bites. When a snake was found, an Indian who knew how to handle snakes would remove the snake to a safe place far away from the circle.

The Timberland boots only lasted a few days on the powwow circuit because they would smash the grass instead of fold it over nicely. The dancers also needed more rest between songs because they were heavy. So now we reserve the Timberlands for hunting and climbing Mt. Rushmore to spray paint a mustash on Washington's face.

Personally I feel we should rename Mt. Rushmore to Indian Killer Rock! There are four of the biggest Indian killers carved into that rock. What were they thinking!

Occasionally, at some powwows, the MC will call for people who are new to powwows to come in and dance. This gives newcomers a chance to come out and dance without the fear of offending someone as well.
Thank you so much this is the best answer anyone could have given. Aho
