Now you know why there are Timberland boots. It may add a bit of flair to dancing fancy shawl. Just bead them up and go!

My answer was, "I have seen non Indians dance at the Gathering, Denver March, Morongo, Schmitzen and Red Earth and the Indians dancing there paid them no mind. I have been in grand entry with some nonIndians. I'm not the Indian police and had better things to do than tell them whether they could or couldn't dance."

At most traditional powwows I have attended there have been dancers and singers who appeared to be non Indian. But they were family or friends of Indians who were in attendance. Besides, I don't think it is my right to tell someone they can or can't dance if I am also a visitor and it isn't my powwow!

Dakota, what area do you live in? Do you live near a Rez or other NDN populated area? If so, go to some dances and observe the festivities. Have fun and see if this is what you really want to do.

Many dances today are not carded. Some are, meaning that you must have some form of NDN ID. The Committee will address the needs to be able to dance if this is the case. This is usually a BIG contest dance. Some may do it to keep out the RifRaf,,,, you can still go and watch(observe).

This wanting to dance thing could be a bit expensive and time consuming. Do you even have an idea of how you would like to dance? Does your family have a specific type of dance or are you just speaking in general?

What is it you really want to know and how do you want to approach the goal?
Yeah, I know of some Rez. No, I don't really have a clue of how I would like to dance. I don't know about my family's type of dance.
I just wanted to know if there was a certain amount of Native American Indian (like 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16)a person had to be to be able to be in a powwow. Right now I'm looking at the forums on this sight about the dances.

I went to a hoedown once and danced, and I'm only part hillbilly. Nobody said anything, well until after the fight broke out!

Occasionally, at some powwows, the MC will call for people who are new to powwows to come in and dance. This gives newcomers a chance to come out and dance without the fear of offending someone as well.
Sorry to be replying to something this far back, but I love the idea of inviting newbies out. Ive never seen it done and I think its a great idea, especially at small community powwows. Even though I started going to powwows when I was a tot it was always as a spectator. Entering the circle for the first time can be intimidating if you dont have someone going in with you. You feel really self concious and worry alot that people will disapprove of the way you look, move or what you are wearing. Even if most people are really very accepting and welcoming!

I'm really surprized that you would not know which parts are NDN and what parts are not. The good looking parts are NDN while the bad looking parts belong to another race.

It's simple stuff!
