you hit the nail on the proverbial head! i believe all feathers are sacred and always do my best to see they are treated as such. its very true that different tribes have different sacred feahers. to me i love them all so i am always careful and treat them all with respect. thanks for pointing that out to us Iron Eagle. cougie

Uh Oh...

If it were me, even during prayer, my instinct would be to get an eagle feather off the ground.

Now, due to mine own inherent personal humiliation at that point, I'd beg for a veteran -- hopefully a relative who will spare me the lecture because I already know what I've done -- to be nearby and quickly "scoop it up".

After the prayer's conclusion we'd "settle up" in whatever manner they see fit in a quick and simple exercise: perhaps merely a handshake. The less people that know this actually happened, the better!

I hate it when folks put on an extravagant show for the masses when it is not absolutely necessary. (Come on, we've all seen it.)

My simple view is this: it's my feather and my screw-up. I get to decide who picks up the feather and "makes things right". The veteran I choose determines things from that point.

Exclamation Well...

I realize this is the "kiss of death" but, if I ever lose a feather, it wanted off. I tie those things down to the point of darned near unreasonability: I don't want one going anywhere.

So, what's the over/under on me losing one next Summer?

I agree you with you to some degree on "if your meant to lose one ya will." some things we just arent meant to keep no matter how hard we tie them down! ive never lost a feather but when i do once it is retrieved i will gift it to someone. cougie

What about the "sacred colored feathers" that the waitresses all wear at the Foxwood's Casino?

If one falls, do the Pequots have a sacred pick up the waitress' feather song?

Grand entry and a prayer is given by special person to the people and a feather drops to land on the ground. Do I go tell arena director or whip person or other high offical.
A prayer took me to the event in the first place and I am still in the prayer. I observe a feather drop to the ground during my prayer. I saw it fall from the person regalia outfit. Like a dream, the feather I see is falling to the ground. In the air it sways back and forth in the wind landing gentle with pointed feather facing away from me. In my prayer I praying for the individual(s) families or him/her that dropped the feather. It significance is life and death, depending on how it is recieved by the One person who picks up the feather. Now, I believe this to be because someOne is choosen to pick up the feather in the first place. Something is amist in the future for the person(s) who dropped the feather in the dance arena. How do (I) protect myself? (I) already did because of the prayer that brought me to this place and what is taken place on behalf of the body that fell to the ground. It is respect and honor in fear of my life because (I) fear God. This is spiritual and spiritual healing will not take place on behalf of the people for fallen feather where the body lies on the ground.

All Feathers

In reponse to WhoMe's Question:

Yes and No.

Yes even those feathers are special in a special way since they came from a living being that the Creator made. How and Why they got an unatural color and place of being may or may not be important to us or the Creator - but they were made by the Creator.

Some may recall the respect for even the pesky misquito or nat that your Grand Parents would not let you swipe at and kill.

But as far as the "ritual" and or "ceremony" to retrieve the "other feathers" - that is all up to the individual and the Elders.

As mentioned before:

What is one to some may not be the same to others.
What may be medicince for one may not be medicine for another.

"Eagle feathers are as sacred as the wearer believes them to be." WhoMe, 2003.

I've heard (and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) that traditionally, Cherokee children were/are given turkey feathers in order to teach them how to take care of feathers in the first place.

I think proximity plays an important part in picking up an eagle feather. If a female dancer drops a eagle feather(s) while getting ready in a lady's room, is she expected to have the drum sing a pickup song and four traditional dancers dance around it?

The same with dropping a feather at home. What is the protocol?

What about intentionally laying eagle fan feathers and eagle bustle feathers on the ground while they are being constructed?

So what you are saying is like that zen thing "If a feather falls in the latrine......."

On a serious note, a few years back a feather fell during grand entry at one event I was at, and brought things to a screeching halt. It fell right in front of the AD and right away he shut off the drum's mic and stopped everybody. Did the song, took care of things, then we got back underway.
