Question Powwow Whistles

Who has the right to blow whistles at powwows to make drums continue singing?

I have been told sundance eagle bone whistles and powwow whistles passed down from grass/warrior societies are two separate kinds of whistles. Each has a different purpose and should not be blown in each others circle.

Southern fancy dancers have always blown whistles in the powwow arena for a different purpose.

What is your take on this controversial question?

I seem to recall a trend about twenty-five (twenty-five?!!) years ago when it seemed nearly every Southern Fancy Dancer whistled all the time. I don't dance much anymore but that is what I do when called so I watch them most closely.

In any event, I have an eagle bone whistle the late Terry Adams gave me with instructions to "be careful" with its use but no more specific details as we never got back to discussing it and I've never used it.

Sum? As in all things, if you don't know why you're doing something you shouldn't be doing it. If you do know why you're doing something, you should only do it in that way.

whistling is diff in the north and in the south

in north, whistles are carried by people who have the right, and they are blown over northern drums, they are typically carved wooden whistles (again, typically in the form of specific birds), these are connected to various tribes specific cultural traditions, such as whistle blowers in societies or org's, or in specific families

in the south, whistles (typically not in the shape of birds) were/are carried by fancy dancers and blown as they dance (not over a drum)

As a "northern guy" I freak out every time I'm in OK and here all the whistles being blown during contests, or even grand entry

I was given an eagle bone whistle from my great uncle who is a WW II vet. He gave it too me for my time in Operation: Desert Storm, during my time in the USMC.

The whistle up in my part of the country is supposed to carried by Veterans and Holy People.

I never heard of just whistling on a northern drum or southern drum. I only use it during Veterans Songs myself.

Interesting thread though.
