Question Powwows in Kentucky

Does anybody know of any powwows near Ft. Knox, KY? I know there was one here on post but that was for the Native American month and I missed it. Thanks

I know of a few powwows in KY but none specifically in Ft. Knox. (The ones I know about are in Olive Hill, Marion, Carrollton, Leitchfield, Louisville and Richmond.) I've only been to two events in the Louisville area. Both were very small and a bit disappointing.

Talking Thanks Guys

Sorry for the wording of my question. I meant NEAR not ON Ft. Knox. I know a couple of Indians on post here and some of them said that the powwows here are not that great. I just wanted to see if what they said was true or not. Again thank you!

dakotah,

If your still around, you might make plans for the NAIA Powwow in Nashville, TN, October, 20-22, 2006.

They usually have good singing and contests.

No one will find much of anything on the Internet. I've already looked. The calendar here at powwows.com is one of the better listings. A couple of events for KY are on there. I've only been to two events in that state and I was not impressed with either one. Anyway, if there are any quality dances in KY, I'd like to know about 'em.

For the curious, there are three upcoming events all scheduled for the same weekend (!!??), April 28/29-30. These events are located in Marion, Olive Hill and Carrollton, KY.

Olive Hill seems to be the best of the bunch. It's a new powwow. From what I am told, there will be several drums that are quite good. The sound system should be very good also.

From what I understand the powwow comittee is getting their information on how to do the powwow from some elders out west. I also understand that some of those elders will be at the powwow. I think they are trying to do this one the right way. This powwow may end up being quite good for the area. It may be worth it to check it out.

Marion has an all womans drum called Mother Earth Beat for their host drum. These women were removed from several drum compititions for singing lodge and prayer songs. They are the ones that pay no attention to their moon time and sit at the drum an sing. They do not have a clue as to what they are doing. I have also been told that this drum has ticked off so many people that they may be feathered. It was done once before and the drum paid no attention. This was at a powwow that their club put on. This powwow is NOT RECOMENDED.

I have no clue about Carrolton.

I would not go to a powwow where Mother Dead Beat is playing even if it was the last powwow before the end of the world. I dont thing their drum should be feathered. Someone should slit the drum head and save the ancestors inside the drum if there are any

what is feathering a drum?

Are you feathered?
Good question! Well you asked so I will anwser you.

Feathering a drum is a way to stop a drum from playing at a powwow and sending them home sometimes for good. It is not done lightly. You better have your ducks in a row and have a lot of backup. As in backup I am talking elders and warriors. You also better be able to explain why you feathered the drum. You explanation better be the truth and you better be able to BACK IT UP!!!!

A drum is feathered usually because they have been disrespectfull to our ansestors and people. Dishonisty is a good reason to feather a drum. A good example is because a drum steals songs or refuses to learn how to do another drums song properly. When we talk about stealing songs we mean that one drum has written a song and recorded it on a CD. That is a copyright violation in the white mans laws. Some drums that record their music do not want other drums to play their songs without permission. That falls back to dishonisty. Another reasons to feather a drum is because the drum refuses to do the right thing. For example when members of a drum are not honest in their dealing by telling lies about others without reguard to anyones feelings.

Feathering the drum should not be taken lightly. Remember this. It is only done when a drum group goes to far by not following our ways. There are some drums out there that dont care about anything but themselves because they feel like rock stars. Not a good way to be on a drum. The only star on a drum is the drum itself not the people around it. If your nose gets to high and you become a snob then you deserve to be feathered. You rip off our people then you deserve to be feathered. Your are dishonist in your dealings then you deserve to be feathered.

Like I said before. This is a last resort to dealing with a drum.
Remember everyone falls off their path even a drum group can. You get back on the right path by correcting the things you did wrong.

One more thing to remember is that the members of the drum are the ones that do the wrong doing. Not the drum.

This Mother Earth Beat drum has caused a lot of hurt and hard feelings. There were feathered before and pain no attention to it. They refuse to correct their wrong doings and get on the right path. That is why I want to rescue the ancestors inside the drum by cutting it opened. That way the drum group will be scilenced for good or untill they get another drum. Cutting opened a drum at a powwow is a very dangerous thing. For this you better have a really good reason. If the powwow accepts your reasons before you do it then you may be protected at least on the grounds. If not you are subject to the laws of the indians and the white man laws. This could be considered DISTRUCTION of PROPERTY from the white man if the drum group files a lawsuit against you.

If you feather or cut open a drum and are wrong in what you are doing then I pity you because the ndn white man and more importantly the Creator will come down on you so hard that you will wish you were DEAD. And if this is the case you deserve to DIE!!!!!!

The person who feathers a drum better know what they are doing. Sometimes wepons are drawn and things can get quite messy.

Now do you want to know exactly how to feather a drum?
If I were you I would not go there!!!

I'm a bit confused and upset. I mention that a drum was feathered and someone here wants to distroy this drum that is not at fault. The problems are caused by the people around the drum. Not the drum itself. Let the drum be.

The people around this drum will self distruct on their own in time. The people and the Creator will take care of it. This is our way. The drum will find its way to another drum keeper to be used for the good of our people.

I have seen in my years many things at powwows. Yes I have see a drum get feathered. It can be a messy sight. I have also seen drums that were left unattended, taken and held for a period of time. The drum was always returned. The ancestor inside the drum should never be left unattended. This is our way.

The one thing I do not understand is when a drum is turned on it's side and covered by a blanket and left alone. Some say that this is a way to leave the drum unattended but protected and safe. All you did was cover the drum but still left it unattended. Is this a way around disrepecting the ancestor inside the drum? Left alone with or without a blanket is still unattended and disrespectful in my way of thinking. I was raised and taught in the old ways. I don't understand some of these new age things. Now you know why our people are loosing their way.

I'm now sorry that I even mentioned about feathering a drum.

I ask for everyone's forgivness.

Where does this "tradition" of feathering a drum come from? I'd never heard of it until yesterday. I'm always amazed at how these new traditions come out of nowhere...why get away from the basics taught to many tribes from the Omahas? Why add stuff? Its fine just the way it is.

This is incredible. I too have never heard of this. I am from Anishinaabe Territory. Whome never heard of it. Singerdad, I believe is from another area. So........... this has to be a very localized tradition. May I ask pwboo and windinhair, what tradition are you following and what nation? I ask because you don't include your nation in your profiles.

I am interested to learn stuff from people of another nation as I do travel and do not wish to offend people within their territories.

Deausexmachina, could you provide any other details? We know you are living in that part of the country.

WOW! THIS IS DEEP.

I have seen the people you talk about. Feathered can also describe their hair.

So how does one feather a drum? What does it entail? Can it be confuse with the way some people honro a drum or call up a song?

Wow, I am having trouble distinguishing whether the term "feathered" is to be punished or pampered. What gives? Now if you are referring to being Whistled, or Fanned, then ok. but FEATHERED? .....

Theres a very good powwow being organized as we speak for Ashland kentucky on june 3-4, 2006 at riverfront park. Its free admission and no politics. Hopefully there will be good results with this powwow, as the area desperatly needs a native spirit filled powwow.
