question about dance style

When I started dancing in the 1960's I danced in two styles, Oklahoma Fancy Dance and Old Style Souix. Now after having been gone from the powwow circuit for years I still see the Fancy Dance, but wonder what style has taken the place of what was called Old Time Souix or Old Style Souix. Danced for over 10 years and now feel like a newbie.....lol

swift horse,

In the years that you have been gone, a new style of dance has emerged. This style combines elements of both fancy dancing and old time Sioux style dancing.

It is called, "Contemporary Traditional Dancing!" *L

Old Style Sioux is still alive and well in the Boy Scout/Hobbyist area. Dont see much in powwow land because it isnt as flashy.

My opinion is that OSS has evolved into northern trad or lakota trad. Ala Terry Fiddler style.

I think OSS it is a neat outfit when put together right.

This style has all but gone away but there are a few of us still doing it. I like the regalia better than contemporary tradish regalia. There is beauty in simplicity. I like the older look of quillwork and the old bead patterns and colors. If it's what you like, then dance it.

I bet if some top traditional dancer put on an Old Tyme Sioux style outfit .... and began to win 1st place everywhere ....

It would catch on like wildfire!!!
