You will get some answers alright. I'll give you some good advice: Keep your eyes open, your mouth shut and you will definitely obtain some insight. Since you just asked such a question, you will get answers you may not like to hear. But hopefully you will respect an ndn's standpoint. I was wondering, why choose to do a paper on the sundance? I guess he wanted the most difficult paper to write in the world.
I wouldnt even know where to start......actually, I wouldn't even start. I'm assuming you have all the books already? Black Elk, Lame Deer, etc. |

You should first start by letting us know about yourself. You didnt fill in anything on your profile. Im sure the people here dont want to waste their time on someone if they arent sincere about NDN ways.

Them snakes eat them grits and redeyed gravy and slows them down when it comes to they are handled.
I guess the texts by Black Elk is probably a good part to read about the Lakota sundance from 1870-80's and a starting point for a paper. It is a bit different today but the elements are still there and NO I will not be an informant to an outsider....we have had enough people write from ignorance from all sides about this ceremony brought by the white buffalo calf woman to the people. I admit it. You've found me out. Dammit.
I just wanted info so I could start my own cult and be a Snake shaman. I'll not bother you again. You humiliated me and I hope someone sticks up for me. :Cry |

In case you can't tell from the post you have received so far you are not very likely to get our members to post much about your question. I'm sure their satire is not of much use to you but, you are trying to write about someone's religious practices and most of the folks that practice this (which by-the-way are the only people qualified to comment about it, and I am not one of them) are usually not very keen on the idea of disseminating that information out to people they do not know. Unlike most religions of middle eastern origin, those who practice sundance are not looking for converts and are not likely to share info about it with you. Some of our members have suggested some light reading for you and that would be your best place to look. Good luck with your paper.

Blairman, one suggestion. DONT write about a topic like that. Last year I wrote a paper on how the native culture affected history. I am involved, and my uncles were very helpful in being subtle. But truthfully if you are going in blind it is impossible to: one get info and two to explain it in a way that would be respectful. Like I said I had A LOT of help and they did that because they trust me and felt it was a good way to introduce our ways outside without revealing much, and I would NEVER do a topi like that again.

hi..was this topic assigned to you? i really wouldnt suggest to write about it....why not go into a different direction such as:
Domestic abuse among Native community, Diabetes among Native men and women, Aids among Native community, casinos in native community: How are they viewed? Native Women's rights etc... try to stick with something community related and defintily not native history ...its way too broad....you can get tons of information about above topics at different community centers throughout all the reservations... |

asking a question
why would you ask this question on the internet in the first place. most papers need legitimate background information from legitimate sources. or quotes from legitimate sources...... who could you possibly quote from the internet?? certainly not ladybeadworker, incase you didnt know thats not a real name..
what a joke!!! ![]() |

I think that maybe its not good for you to write about the sundance, because a person shouldnt talk about something they dont really know. If you were a sundancer, it could be appropriate if you wrote about maybe how it made you feel what you felt.
Good luck on a paper though, maybe try something that isnt such a sensitive topic, you will get more support.

Many professors will actually prefer that you do NOT acquire information on the internet because the sources aren't legitimate As another person has said, write on a topic that isn't so sensitive. I was told, that if you do not know much or nothing at all about ceremonies or teachings, it's best to not say anything at all, because doing so would disrespectful. Nuff said
