I'm normally too shy to ask anyone to dance. :Blush But at this one powwow, they were having an Owl Dance Special and so I picked a guy at the last minute and we got out there and won first place. It was fun and we visited while we were dancing and turned out we knew some people and were sort of related. :)

I think you should go with the public ridicule thing. My grandmother always told me that if a man offends me to beat him over the head with you pocket book ;0)

My experience

sometimes it can be funny to see the jokes about a guy if he turns you down AS LONG AS IT IS IN GOOD FUN and he thinks so too. I asked someone one time. No one seemed to be "hanging" with him so I asked him. He said no. ( Found out later cuz of arthritis.) I wasn't ill about it. I sat back down...no big deal. Everyone else made a big deal about it saying he owed me $5.00. Even at the next powwow, they teased him. He did try to give me $5.00 at the following powwow. I refused it. Why? Cuz I thought it was silly. He and I had talked before it had all gotten crazy. He wasn't disrespecting me and I wasn't offended.

This weekend they had a two step freestyle. I asked thisone hot boy to dance and he lead me all around the arena, showing me all kinds of new ways to dance.

The nexy day, they had another one and I asked this other hottie and I impressed him with my fly moves. hahaha!!

For real thought, just get up and ask. I do everytime. I'd hate to see the day I get turned down though--someone's gettin a good bannock slap.

I have asked singers and drummers before, as long as they aren't singing the song then it's usually ok. And I ALWAYS try to find out b4 if my eye candy has a girl.

cool

Hey that sounds pretty saucy you got the confidence to ask a guy every time, I will ask a guy next pow-wow if there is a ladies choice. I fear that rejection so much it sways me from asking any guy anything let alone to dance, I don't think I am that pretty to just be asking any guy though. I will get there, I am going to give it a try at the next powwow and have you guys in mind.

How come there aren't any mens choice dances?

Never seen any before,
I'm not sure why, I can't really give you a reason, but somehow I feel that it would be bad. Real bad. lol:Chatter

C'mon ladies think about it. (SHE'S MINE! I SAW HER FIRST! AS IF! bite chomp poke stab punch)

But in all seriousness folks, any man who outright turns you down because of your looks or whatever is just rude. Anytime you are asked to dance it is an honor. I'm not big on hurtin people's feelings. BUT what about them two spirited folks who dress up like jingle dress dancers? Hasn't happened yet but I have frequent nightmares about it.

two spirited

I read about two spirited people in the colors magazine they are gay or lesbian couples right? They are supposed to have a greater aspect of dreams and visions, and have a great perspective on life. I know my mom is two spirited, she is pretty cool. I don't think in a ladies choice dance that a lady asking another lady would be appropriate to other people. I know a couple of my girl friends wanted to grass dance but they won't let her.

ladies choice for fun dances

It depends what part of the country you come from? The traditional custom among tribes traditional or ceremonial custom dances? The social dances (like handkerchief dance, rabbit dance, owl dance and ect...other dances), ceremonial dances (like wedding dance, veteran coming back from war, first Indian naming for boy name and give away and ect...so on).
Pow Wow's are fun social dances that is done for competition or spectator/audience.
What I observed at Pow Wow's. I observed a man and woman owl dance. The MC alerts the dancers or audience the social dances. A woman usually asks a man to dance. The takes woman to dance area. The man addresses woman to inside the circle dancing counter clockwise. The man on the other portion of the circle faces woman. Man/Woman both embrace hands. Man left hand to woman out reached right hand in front of them. Man puts his right arm around woman waist or small of woman back. Thus, woman does the same with her left hand to man waist or shoulder. Rabbit dance is addressed as mentioned above in owl dance. The man put his left hand behind his back and woman reaches with left hand to man hand behind back. Then woman puts her right hand behind her back and man reaches with right hand to woman hand behind back. Still standing side by side.If both man and woman ankles were tied together with a rope. The man and woman free legs. Start the motion forward, while inner legs take small prancing steps in time forward and backward motions with drum beat going around the circle. Is read simple, well at least I tried to explain.....Ha.

Geez, the MCs at our powwows keep it simple. They explain that ladies can ask a guy to two step, and if he doesn't have an obvious reason (physical impairment, married) he has to pay her some small gift. wah...sometimes, I was hoping for the small gift...lol jks
