I live in Sacramento, CA, and there are little to no powwows here! I know im young and mixed blood... but i would like to know how i (or my family, which ever) can host a powwow... maybe i could borrow my old High school's soccer field, or even my college's football field for a powwow.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone has the information!

Please Email me at [email protected], Thank you for your help!!!

first, you'll need money for insurance and security. borrowing isn't in the vocabulary for public locations. next, you'll need to cough up $3,000.00 for the drum maybe less if you personally know the drum for you'll need to house and feed them too.

Agreed!!!!

This is not something a person would want to tackle as a new project without some experience. The powwow plan usually starts more then a year in advance the same as weddings and such. There is much to do and little time to do it. Securing a place can be a hastle let alone finding the funds to support it. Plan on hiring at least two drums and get full commitments from them. That will take some time as most are on a circuit and take gigs a year in advance. The sound system also needs to be booked a year in advance. My sound system is almost booked up for the 2009 season. There is also the date of the powwow that must be looked at to help guarantee dancers. You need to look at every powwow in your area and check their dates. You don't want to book the same weekend as it will cause some problems. You may find your powwow has no dancers or spectators. Dancers and hard core powwow spectators usually have a circuit as well. You want to find an opened date so your date will not conflict with other powwows in your area. Look back at least two years to find who does what in your area within 300 to 500 miles. Then do the math to figure out the best date for your powwow to be a sucess.

As Suzzie has said, season yourself by helping out on a powwow comittee for a few years to get the hang of what it takes. It's not like hiring a band for a party and sending out invitations. Dancers do not RSVP nor does the public.

You will also want to personally advertise the powwow the entire season before your powwow with fliers personally taken to powwows in your area. You will also want to send flyers with people to powwows outside your area within 500 miles or so. The MC will be happy to announce your gathering. This is also a chance to talk it up with vendors in person for your event. Most vendors have a circuit as well but are usually willing to take a chance on a new thing provided the package is attractive and is close to home or on their way passing between powwows. It's like a free stop between powwows to make more cash. While you visit other powwows, don't be shy. Make friends of the dancers, vendors, arena directors, vets, MCs, and drums. And by all means, get out in that circle and dance!!!! Don't do it to attract others at the event for yours. Do it for yourself and the Creator. Learn all you can before you attempt such an event.

There is much to do that can overwhelm you very easily.

Ken

This is much valued information!!! the thing is im not quite sure WHERE to go. *thinks* i understand how this whole process works and how long it takes and the stress... A powwow comittee sounds fun and exciting plus alot of work that i would be willing to do. but since there are close to no powwows in my area it would be kinda hard to even find one... i possibly have to wait untill august of 2009 before i can get any kind of that information... and if thats the case~! it is a wait i will be willing to take... in the mean time, i shall work on my outfit. thank you
