Been gone for awhile

Hello,
I haven't been here in a very long time. I'm sure not many people remember me, I didn't post a whole lots before. Anyway, I have found myself at this site again. My name is Christina but I prefer Chris because it seems less formal.
I am part Metis on my Mom's side, the rest is German, Irish and of course French, I guess I fit the bill for a heinz 57 mix :)

I first came to this site I think a year ago, because my Aunt (Mom's sister) was working on our family genealogy and her research confirmed that some of our ancestors were Metis. I wanted to learn more. There is ample info on the Irish, French and German heritage, but not a whole lot on Metis.

I also go to Pow Wows when I am able. We have one in Indiana every year not far from where I live in Michigan. I try to get to that one every year. This year I didn't make it because I was very busy with school and I think I had a paper due so couldn't really afford to take a day off, even it was on the weekend.

Anyway, I have been doing what research I can, I've learned that the language the Metis in Canada speak (which is where my ancestors lived) is Michif-Cree. That was a neat bit of info to find. I'm still not clear on what part of Canada my ancestors lived in, but I do know my Grandpa was born in Nova Scotia, I don't know if he speaks Michif-Cree because he still won't admit he has any Metis in him. I guess he and Grandma (when she was living) came from a time when admitting one was Native was simply not done and actually shameful. He does however speak French fluently, which I guess is to be expected since he was born and raised half his life in Nova Scotia.

I can't wrap my head around anyone being ashamed of heritage. It's not something one can change and I am very excited and proud even if I am only a very small part Metis and look completely Irish and German. The spirit is still there.
I'm proud to be part Celt, part German as I say, but somehow I feel a little efferently about my Metis heritage (regardless of how infinitesimal it is in me). Not sure if I can explain it properly so I won't try right now. Something I still need to look into myself about and try and figure out I guess.

Ok, my intro is absurdly long, so I'll stop typing. I'm happy to be here and look forward to meeting others and learning from everyone.
Peace,
Chris
