Question Different Backgrounds...

If you were in a position to take on a student, would you be comfortable with a student from a different tribal background?

Whaddya talking about? Sex? This is a wide open question (pardon the pun).

Asking questions like this could lead to the amusement of a lotta folks. Be specific.

Taking on a person with Tribal background! *snicker*

No I am not a teacher... I am a potential student... no it is not sexual :)
My great grandmother was Cherokee, and I have come across someone who is willing to share knowledge but is Lakota, and I think it bothers him that they are different tribes. Will I run into this often is my question?

It could be possible that hes not comfortable with it cause he IS of a different background... Being Native is good but we need to understand that we are NOT all the same which i am sure youre already aware of... and maybe he is just unsure of what exactly it is that you would like him to share with you.

Its better for him to be cautious than act all knowingly about sumthing that he may be unsure of and give you wrong information....

I dunno Im guessing of course... but I would feel like that too... i wouldnt want to intentionally insult anyones Native culture or traditions that are different than my own... Or come off as tryin to impose my own beliefs upon someone else..
The best thing i can suggest is just to ask him what he is comfortable in sharing with you and to just accept that gift of knowledge from him.

Well if your great gramma is cherokee, wouldn't you be cherokee? Learning some other nations stuff is alright, but you should practice your own.

Lemme put it this way. If you are a bird, you'd want to learn how to fly and do all these things that birds do daily. You certainly wouldn't want to learn the ways of a lizard and practice those ways for lifetime.

learning is always good, no matter creed, color nor size ...
when you have and show respect - you have nothing to loose
one is never to old to learn, nor to teach
and
education gives you more strength
and
no question is stupid, except the un asked one(s)

Just a lil' of my personal thought as a student and a teacher - Inuk*

Thank you. I have no one to share beliefs from my family, that is why I am looking for someone. I have studied a lot of different beliefs and never found the one that feels right to me! Some have come close, but there is always something that doesn't sit right with me.
Thanks again!

I live traditional but don't look like it!

how about those who are not seen as native.........but have lived native..............it is difficult to fit in! So many perspectives.....especially racially motivated! People are surprised when I speak the language and am from the rez - but find it hard to beliieve because i do not look native..........how do I deal with the prejudice or feeling of not fitting in?

Yes thats hard.. I too dont look totally Native because of the fact that i am half... I grew up on the rez for only a short period of my life.. Although I was raised In white society so to say... My roots were always back where my people were... The memories from when i was a youngin really took its hold on me.. all my life i struggled to return home where i was born.. where my family was.. I made it and since have been living and embracing My culture , heritage , traditions and spirtual beliefs.. I have finally come to feel more complete and not so lost...

I do get what youre sayin tho... Some people that Do know this about me which have the dillusion that i just woke up one day and said Im gonna be Native... and start actin it.. No it was a long struggle... to be a lil girl and feel confused and not understand what youre being taught because of memories of a past that almost seems to be forgotten.. I never forgot.. I always remembered and fought to be taken back home. Im glad I did...

But what saddens me is the discrimination between those that DID grow up on the rez ALL thier lives who feel that they are somehow better than the ones that didnt.. its like they have this obligation to feel pitty for us.. well theres no need because we are the strong ones, we fought to get back and we are the ones that have to relearn everything.. its not an act its called rediscovering who you really are.

I found it almost hypocritical that people cry that our Native children are being taken away from our reserves & our native people and put into white families... but then when that same child returns when he/she is old enough to make that decision for themselevs ya get the "Ohh youre just acting Indian and you think youre better than us cause you grew up white".. Or Prove to us first who you are prove that your native...and ya get the stares from the darker browns... cause your lighter and the darker ones think they are better cause they are darker.. hell i have seen the blue eyed Blonde hair Indian .. full blood... and then seen the dark brown who are not even half blood.. So comon people lets quit acting like the opressive invaders that taught us to be like this and just accept each other, support each other in each others dreams, endeavours and journeys.

I have always known Natives to be more giving and willing to share than be greedy lil things that say go away.. but this is only noticeable within the older generations ( My observation).. somehow we younger have taken it upon ourselves to be MAD for our ancestors and to continue to harbor bad feeling even towards those of our own kind just because we are ALL Different..

If people have mentality like the above mentioned where they cast judgement before they look than I have no use for them and to me are a waste of space in my thoughts.... I would rather spend my time with those who will teach and guide me than those that criticise and put me down all because my skin color is lighter and all becasue i wasnt raised ALL my life on the rez... Maybe so... But I am not igorant to our peoples sufferings and our peoples way of life.. In fact thats what draws me to our people; the simplicities in life that we hold dear to our hearts... others can call it poverty.. i just call it coziness.... We do not calculate our worth as a people by what we have but rather by what we do..
