Formal introduction!

Boozhoo niiiji-bimaadiziig!

I have been a member here for quite a while (joined a year or two ago but never posted/rarely visited) and just started posting a few weeks ago - I've been enjoying myself so far, I sort of skipped a formal introduction though so I thought I would do so.

My name is Sandra and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I was raised just outside Six Nations reserve in Caledonia and also in Hamilton. I am Ojibwe. My father is a teacher of the language. Unfortunately I am not yet fluent but hope to be someday and I'm working on it! I took classes throughout my childhood but I seriously suck when it comes to languages in general (and Ojibwe is an extremely difficult language to learn!!) so it's a slow, slow process!! My Dad is doing his best with what he has to work with!

I have a 7 year old daughter, Clara, we both dance jingle. I have not danced since I was a teen, but I am gearing up to get back to it. My regalia needs some work!

I moved away from home and after moving around NA a bit for several years we finally settled in California. We now live in Santa Clarita (20 mins north of LA) and most likely this is where we will stay. I am a photographer and my husband is a film editor.

I sometimes feel very disconnected from the indian community local to me, I know only a precious few people who I have met at the pow wow we have in town - which is very small to begin with. I do find it difficult to meet new people in general and especially since I am somewhat light skinned and my daughter is virtually white (I'm mixed to begin with and my husband is as white as they come ) I do find it hard to integrate into the society here not knowing anyone. When I was young, it was never an issue because everyone knew who my father was, but here I am on my own - no-one knows me or my family and it's difficult to be accepted. I think some of my paranoia about being judged as a wannabe is all in my head sometimes but I find it difficult nonetheless. However it is extremely important to me to be connected, it has been too long already with all the moving around and my shyness and I long for my daughter to be raised with her culture the same way I was and though I teach her as much as I know, she needs a village, too. I am trying to work up the courage to strike up conversations more and put aside my fear of rejection.

Anyway so that's a bit about me - perhaps more than you bargained for!!

I look forward to getting to know you and hope perhaps to meet a few LA folk in the process!

Hello and officially welcome to the forum (though you've been here a while)! It's really nice to meet you.

It's wonderful that you try to stay so connected to your culture. Culture and traditions are very important to pass down to our children. I know how you feel with being far away from your tribe and that isolated and disconnected feeling. I'm Lakota and while trying to remain active in the community here, I haven't necessarily met too many others around here from my tribe. Like you, I'm trying to get back into dancing (fancy shawl though), but that shyness kicks in when it comes to talking to people.

Ooo you're over in Santa Clarita? My best friend (more like a sister, really) is semi-near you in Simi Valley. If you see a short Nahua/Chinese woman with long purple hair, tall socks and boots running around, that's my sis. She's friendly, so feel free to harass her ^_^.

Anyway, it's a pleasure to meet you! I hope you make tons of friends, and I look forward to seeing you around the forum!

Haha, thanks for your reply Fang and your commiseration. I don't make it over to Simi Valley much, but I'll keep my eye out when I do! Your sister sounds like my kind of gal LOL.

Welcome. I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself on here. It's a great website.

I don't know any Native people where I live. I'm sure besides me there are more around, but there are no local communities. Not close to me anyhow.

I go to powwows when they are close to me, but I don't know anyone there and like you, it's kind of hard for me because I don't know if I'll be accepted. Unlike other members of my family, I don't look Native.

Look forward to seeing you around the forum.

Hiya Doll.

You missed heaven by about 40 miles. Ventura is on the other side of the freeway from you. Take the 126 at at the end of it is the Pacific Ocean.

There's a powwow on the other side of the mountain from you next weekend. Never been to it, but thought about checking it out one day. Gotta work the other day.

Redbird's Children of Many Colors Native American Powwow in Moorpark, July*19-21 - Local Events - Conejo Valley Guide

It's on the west end of the 118.

Casino powwows starting in September are mostly down the I-10 corridor. Everybody from the plains states and Canaduh are here for the money n the weather. LOL

I would recommend San Manuel powwow, along with the other ones. (Don't want people to say I'm biased). The Santa Ynez powwow is cool too. It's north of Santa Barbara near Michael Jackson's Neverland...and Fess Parker's wineries.

Not sure where you'll find a concentrated NDN community. L.A. is pretty big. There's a couple of other members on here who know more about your area.

I LOVE Ventura. It is indeed heaven and we visit whenever we can! However my husband works in Burbank and the 1.5+ hour commute would not be so heavenly, LOL!

Thanks for the info on pow wows. I'm planning to hit a few of them this year. Since we moved here about 5 years ago we haven't had a vehicle (or if we did, it was always a mile or two from breaking down!) so getting places was tough. We finally got a reliable car in March so this year should be a lot better.

We have a pow wow here in SCV which we've been attending yearly. But... well, it's very small (I do like small pow wows usually though, I'm not a fan of the gigantic competition ones much) BUT it's a bit of a fishbowl. Lots of spectators. Still enjoyable and does the trick but I'm looking forward to attending some of the other ones.

I don't think I will find a concentrated population nearby, but I hope to be able to attend pow wows and know some people! I want my daughter to have friends, too.

Ah crap. Are we doing things formally around here now? Does this mean I have to put on a shirt?
