Greetings from The Hollywood NDN

I've been on here looking at pow wow information a few times over the past several years, never occurred to me to check out the forum until recently, and after a bit of looking I decided I'll give it a shot.

As you can see by my name I'm a Hollywood NDN, I was born in Hollywood (well East Hollywood anyway) and raised largely on the best side of Los Angeles that lies east of the river. Life story time! I'm of Shoshone, Mexican, and White American descent. Mexican/Shoshone mother (approximately 3/4s Mexican, 1/4 Shoshone), White father with lineage from a host of European countries, coolest being Italy, because pasta is tasty aand gondolas are cool. I didn't actually know I was an Indian until my family visited the rez when I was 8, it explained a lot. Why there was Indian stuff throughout the house, why when I would tell my mom to play cowboys and Indians with me she made an arrow shooting motion and told me she shot me I'm dead and should stay off her land...I've only actually visited the reservation like 2 or 3 times in my life, it's a 6 hour drive or maybe 8, gave my mom panic attacks going all that way at once. But any challenges to my native authenticity will be met with me countering I'm exactly what it says on the tin, Hollywood NDN though it's an identity that I strongly identify with trust me I don't feel like much of an Indian either

Some factors got me more into Native American heritage, of course throughout my life even though I was mostly raised Mexican eating Mexican food in a largely Mexican community but my mother still instilled me with pride on being native, at least after I knew about it. Then when I got older into my teenage years I got more into Chicano stuff and I gravitated naturally away from those claiming the southwest as theirs and towards the crowd more about reclaiming their indigenous Mesomaerican heritage, and upon meeting so many that have a sense of loss not knowing where they're from even gave me a sense of how relatively lucky I am for the scant connections I have, that pushed more into my American Indian heritage too. And there were events I went to when I was 16, first a census rock the count thing, then a pow wow , loved them. Instilled me with more pride in that, got me into native media, politics, I'm hooked. It's not like I don't acknowledge the other aspects of my heritage, it's just that I happen to favor the part that happens to make better tacos

So currently I'm a 19 year old East LA College student (no major yet) that likes to read heavily from the school library's Indian aisle, listen to both Psycho Realm and HGS Savage Family and would like to introduce himself to the community at pow wows.com

I was only born there, at Kaiser Hospital, I spent my childhood living in Atwater Village, now I live in El Sereno

And Normal Street in the Hollywood area? Some city planner had a sense of humor :p
