Hello from Japan VIA the USA!

Hello!

I'm so happy to be here, let me introduce myself a bit. I'm from Kansas City, Missouri but I live abroad in Japan with my husband and little 4 month old son. Having my first child has given me quite a mission in life, and loads of fresh ideas for how to do more good in the world.

One topic that came up was Thanksgiving. I had originally planned to do the usual stuff I grew up doing, basically cooking a huge meal and sleeping it off. But I also realized there was a story to be told about the holiday, and it just wasn't a good enough reason to celebrate IMHO. So I decided to forgo the usual thanksgiving routine, and turn the holiday into a day to learn about Native American culture! Each year we could focus on a different tribe, and buildup the dinner each year by trying a new Native American dish. I could also find coloring books and crafts for my son, and buy CDs to support native artists both traditional and contemporary. I'm really exited about it!

When I was a little girl I was REALLY interested in Native American culture, but kept getting the feeling I was intriguing or bothering the more I wanted to learn and experience it. I didn't want to cause any harm, so I stayed away. But I feel my son needs to learn about the original Americans as an American himself, I think it's so important, so I am hoping I can do it with a lot of love and respect for the culture and traditions.

So my hope is I can learn and ask questions here to make this plan a reality, maybe even make some friends and in the future on one of our trips to visit family back in the states maybe we can attend a cultural event and/or a pow wow, depending on the tribes traditions. Thank you so much for your time!
