Welcome to the site. As you can see, posts often take time to get replies here, but most of us are reasonably friendly.

Hello, all my name is Kesha, I am Eastern Band Cherokee/Cheyenne/Blk, I have just learned about this site I get the news letters in my email but never knew about this part of the site. I am really enjoying myself here and having a great time. My mother and I are currently teaching my son to speak Cherokee cause after a visit to Cherokee, North Carolina and speaking to the Elders there and he wanted to learn to speak it and he is doing very well, with the book, tapes they pick out for us to get and the online courses.
( I wish I could pick it up as easy as he has he is almost very fluent after almost a year.)

I would love to know where you acquired the book to learn to speak the Cherokee language. Please tell me the name and how to get it. My grandmother always told me that her great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee and in the past three weeks I have finally found her name and when she was born. I am excited about finding out about my heritage. Welcome to the site. My name is Kim.

Howdy Gina,
Welcome to the site. My wife and I live in Kentucky also. I dance Southern Straight as I have Ponca relatives in Oklahoma. My wife doesn't dance 'cause she has Multiple Sclerosis, but she enjoys going to dances when she can. We noticed you are Lakota. We have Oglala relatives on Pine Ridge in Red Cloud Community, plus lots of friends over on Rosebud too. Feel free to chat anytime.

Hi Gina., I'm Gail. I think I have some interest (almost certain) in Lakota Sioux, members. I would like to visit W/ you on your topics. I'm a reader, of books. I study them for keys and things that catch my attention in the course of the reading of the books. I recall, once, I got my hands on a book I believe of Lakota Sioux language. I tried to study it, and learn from it. But it was just too difficult for me. The last word you wrote in your post, Pila I recall. How does that interpret to a non speaker or understander of your language?? If it pleases you!!?? I'll stop for now.Getting close for me to dinner time. Later. GES

Howdy Gail,

I just thought I'd help out a little bit. "Pila" is the informal way of saying "thanks" in Lakota. The formal way would be to say "wo'pila".

If you are looking to learn Lakota, may I suggest a book titled, "Everyday Lakota: An English-Sioux Dictionary for Beginners" by Joseph S. Karol

You could probably find a copy by writing to:
The Rosebud Educational Society
St. Francis Mission
St. Francis, South Dakota 57572

Hope this helps.
