New Poster Introduction

Hello - I hesitated to join the forum. THe last forum I joined, I was slammed immediately by internet bullies armed with scorn and disdain.

I have two purposes for joining a native american forum.

1) An interest in the various cultures of different tribes of north america. I recognize that while native americans have some things in common (as a group) their cultures are as varied and interesting and different as the various latin american countries or the english, welsh, irish and scottish. You want to upset a welshmen - call him english. My interest may have been kindled by my grandfathers claims that his grandmother was native american. We do not know if this is true or not. Even if there is not a drop of Caddo blood in me, i still have a deep regard for the music, artistry and culture of the native american.

2) If possible get some clarity on my families claims. Perhaps their are resource that can be shared with me about this. My Great great grandmother (on my mothers fathers side) claimed to be 100% Caddo or Tejas indian. They lived in the part of texas where the mound builders lived. All the research I have done finds only caucasin sounding names but my understanding is that her father changes their names sometime in the early 1800s. Their last name became West - which was what their last name had been in their native language prior to that. There was alot of name changing going on back then. My maternal grandmothers side of the family changed their name from MacLaren to Lawrence. Alice West - my supposidly Caddo Great great grandmother married a boy named Ruffin Bishop. The last name Bishop came from his father in the 1700s - John "son of the" Bishop - a ******* child of a priest who had no real last name. And thats just on my mothers side of the family. As you can see, getting understanding from her side is a bit tough. If Alice West was actually a Caddo indian, that means I have one great great grandmother who was indian and everyone else was Scottish (on my mothers side). Father is german through and through. But, chances are she wasnt a Caddo indian and we are just a bunch of redneck scotts. Either way I am curious about the culture.

Anyway - not sure why I am here, just - I want to learn more. I want exposure to resources to learn.

Thank you for reading.

They say blood is thicker than water ! Now maple syrup is thicker than blood , so are pancakes more important than family ?

There are "Elders" and there are "Olders". Being the second one doesn't make the first one true !

Somebody is out there somewhere, thinking of you and the impact you made in their life.
It's not me....I think you're an idiot !

There's a chance you might not like me ,

but there's a bigger

You are a stinker... Love your signature.

Did you know the saying "blood is thicker than water " is completely misunderstood these days? The original saying meant that Blood - shed in battle together - bonds men tighter than the water of the womb...meaning those who fight and stand together are more brothers than brothers through birth. Food for thought.

I actually identify as American. My very German father says I am obviously the product of my mothers "fae" scottish and american Indian side...capricious, free thinking and "earthy"... But in the end Im not at all sure it matters. My sisters husband is black and Mexican. That makes my niece -...1/4 black, 1/4 Hispanic, 1/4 German and a 1/4 Scottish with a smidge of Caddo (maybe)...so what. Does she have to choose one. Can she embrace it all. Take from her past the parts the she allows to define her?

I think there is a huge difference between those who claim ancestry that is not theirs and those who make no such claims and are just passionate about a certain culture...even if genetically they are not apart of it.

Im actually working on a fictional Novel that has parts of this worked out.

My character is the daughter of a native american woman (alaska). Her father is not human - he is Fae. She is raised by her mothers husband (who is not her father) - apart from her mothers tribe. Her step father is a werewolf - but is not apart of a pack because he is the enforcer of pack law and as such, must live outside of the pack dynamic. Thus - she is native american - but not, she has no knowledge of her fae fathers culture, she is not apart of a pack...She has to define herself outside of these normal social constructs that define her.

I self identify as American. And ultimately I am not sure if it matters one way or the other "what" I am genetically. More important is who I choose to be. I dont mean in the manner those woman pretended to be another race and lied about it to the world.

I mean - my G-G-Grandma might or might not have been - but the fact that they said she was created an interest in this culture. I love the mountains and the woods. When I was a girl I would close my eyes and imagine being in the woods as a young native girl - before the land was cut by roads etc. I love native american wood flute music and play a wood flute - not as well as my classical flute but I am learning. Those things may have been kindled by the stories of my ancestor and the flame still burns, even if the stories are found to be inaccurate.

Self delusion is unhealthy
but knowledge and seeking to understand is not.

Welcome to powwows.com.

Yes, trying to understand what comes down to us from our ancestors can lead to interesting places. I spent a couple summers in Great Britain learning about my Scots and Cymry ancestors. I wasn't as imaginative as you. I certainly never imagined myself in a kilt, LOL.

You'll have to go up to Bringer and visit the Caddo Nation Heritage Museum. Take in a turkey dance. Watch those lovely Caddo ladies and their dush-tooh. So much style and history.

Post hi and welcome

I too was bashed for everything I said on here so I had to leave for awhile to let off some steam and now I am back and ready for whatever anyone throws up at me I am on the defense at times because of how many people were bashing me for everything I said ok Mr. and Miss Perfection on here didn't know we all had to be so politically correct on here. I thought this was a place to learn and not bash each other cant we all get along no matter what race or nationality we are and what differences we may have cant we work it out? Sorry but it makes me mad when I see people getting bashed on here including myself. I am no longer claiming any native blood I am American that's what got me in trouble before so I keep my mouth shut and not claim it anymore. I am white American and that's it. People most likely would not see in Native blood in me anyway so why even bother claiming it in the first place answer me that? But don't get me wrong I still enjoy Pow-wows haven't been in awhile it seems I have to drive three hours a way for the big pow-wows the one they held in Springfield Ohio for 20 years they don't have anymore. Anyone know of any pow-wows close to Beavercreek Ohio I could attend? And by the way if you want to chat personally with me send me a message in private and well chat on a personal Level.
