Newbie in AZ (Originally from WI)

Hello all. Thanks for letting me join! I'm here to educate myself on the issues currently affecting Native peoples, as well as learn what I can about my own Native heritage, which I have recently confirmed (definitely Menominee and Ottawa, and possibly Chippewa as well). My ancestors are few and distant, but I feel a connection to them and wish to learn more to honor their memories. I have no intention of demanding enrollment, benefits or anything else of that nature; I personally find that reaction ridiculously entitled and just plain wrong. I simply want to learn, and do so in a way that is respectful. I'm currently living in AZ, but originally hail from Appleton, WI. It's nice to meet you all! :)

You made my heart smile to read your post in Menominee.
Eneq new anow! Waewaenen; mesek panaenemow kenah?
(I am doing well; thanks and I hope that you are too?!)

I only know a limited amount of Menominee words & phrases. Iíve tried to teach myself more words by reading 2 different dictionaries (& phonetically sounding them out)Öend result: my brain hurts & turns out Iím not pronouncing words/phrases correctly! LOL! I got my own language going that no one understands, but me.

My mom was a 1st language native speaker. Like so many NDNs at that time, she told me how the Jesuit priests and the nuns would beat/hit them in Boarding School for speaking our language. Itís so sad what was done. And our language almost died out.

On the good news side, if you havenít seen it: Hereís an awesome & inspiring video about Ron Cornís efforts in revitalizing our language & in teaching his daughter, Mimikwaeh, Menominee from birth. Sheís our 1st language native speaker in several generations!

Living Language | The Ways

Again, welcome & have fun posting!

I know only a bit so far myself; since I'm in AZ I can't get a hold of concrete learning materials beyond what I can find online. And I know what you mean; I think because the language is quite different from English as far as structure, flow, etc. it makes it harder to learn later in life.

Your mother's story is heartbreaking; I grieve for her and all the children that were so brutalized. At least, as you said, efforts are being made to slowly undue some of the damage. But still, words fall utterly short and "I'm so sorry," cannot begin to cover it.

I have watched the video; it's very inspiring! My son is picking up some words/phrases along with me (better than I am if we're being honest), but his first language is definitely English. Still, hopefully we can learn together.

Welcome to Powwows.com. I hope you enjoy reading and posting here. You will find lots of information here. See you around. I don't come here very often. I am old woman enough to be a grandmother to young people here. So have fun.

Like you, Iíve moved away from Wisconsin. Itís harder to learn when you donít live up north/back home/close by.

My sisters have taken several language classes at the tribal college over the years. I have "hand-me-down" language lessons. LOL! My pc doesn't have a cd drive, so I listen in my car. When my son comes home, I'll see if we can transfer the audio tracks so I can send them to you.

Also, this is really good! I don't know if you've visited the Menominee Language Institute site:
Menominee Language Institute

I don't know if you've seen that the tribe has added some language lessons on our website:
https://menominee-nsn.gov/CulturePag...geClasses.aspx
This isn't as in depth as what RonCo teaches at the college, but every little bit helps.

Iíve heard a couple of things about the college: Theyíre looking at ways of maybe doing long distance learning because now more than 1/2 of the tribe has moved off the rez in the last few years. Theyíve been so successful (which is really good!) that more non-NDNs are students. Apparently, Iíve heard, the college could be in jeopardy of losing their status of being a ďtribal collegeĒ because not enough NDNs are students. Offering online/long distance classes could be a ďwin-winĒ scenario. There are no definite plans right now as far as I know.

Lastly, tips that I can share from RonCo & my sister is talk/practice as much as possible at home and to focus on verbs rather than memorizing lists of nouns. Hope this helps. Good luck!

@Eagleriverclanband, thank you again! I have actually been listening to the audio lessons on the tribal website, and have looked at/listened to some of the material on the language institute website (though some is restricted to tribal members only.) Online classes would be amazing; I hope the college ends up doing that! And if you are able to get those recordings that would be fantastic (but no worries if it's too much trouble.) Waewaenen once again, you have been so kind to me. :)
