Smile Susen- journalist from Denmark

greetings from denmark

Im a journalist/photographer from denmark, and im going to south dakota/Iowa from end november and 1 week ahead. I really want to do a story on the american natives wich is in that area. A powwow would be even more fantastic.

I know that most native people dont want to talk to non native journalists.

I have done a lot of native stories, and can refure to the Tigertail family from the Miccosukee tripe in Florida, wich I have visited and worked with. They allso normaly dont want to talk to non native journalists, but they accepted me(after a while), and I have visited them 3 times (from 99-2003), and made 5 stories about members of there tripe.

I made one about Jimmy Tigertail that got his head stucked in a gators mouth, I went gatorhunting with a couple of guys, I did one about the medicine man, and one about the tribes story, and how the old chief Tigertail made the airboat business and the casino, and send all the kids to college for those money.

I have allso been living in the amazon jungle for a month, together with the Yanomami tripe.

I will be very greatfull if someone can help me, to get contact to someone that is having a powwow or are willing to tell me about there tripe, the first week of december. The people I photograph, will get a CD with all the photos

Maybe you dont really care about me and the stories, but then se it as a chance, for getting some really nice pictures for free. I am a brilliant photographer

I have attached a couple of photos, so you can se who I am

with a heart full of hope and kind regards

Susen

Hi Susen. I belong to the Wannashare Tripe, but we are not in South Dakota or Iowa.

Seriously, it does not sound like you are actually joining this site. But if you are trying to find a pow wow, we have a good calendar of pow wows across the country. Check it out.

Good luck with your search.

thanx for your answers

Princess please dont forget that english isent my languige, so I might make a bummer now and then.

storyteller.. your right im not joining this forum the way the rest of the others are. I originally wrote to Poul and ask if he could point me in a direction, to whom I could contact regarding the stories. And he adwised me to join this forum, so here I am

I did look at the kalender, but I cant find anything at the time im over. Anyway a pow wow wasent the only thing im looking for. Basecly(cant spell that one), im just looking for native stories in generel. It could be allmost anything, as long as it descripes fragments of life, on good and bad. things to inlighten my part of the world.

anyway thanx for your time guys. It dosent seem that I have much luck here, but I had to give it a try

Hmmm South Dakota or Iowa
That is a large area that you are planning on visiting
Last week of November and 1st week of Decemeber that is not a the ideal time to be looking for powwows in that part of the country. June, July and August maybe not the week after Thanksgiving

May I suggest some things

Try getting in contact with several tribes (not tripe) in the areas that you are talking about

Iowa

Sac & Fox Tribe
3137 F Avenue
Tama, IA 52339
(515) 484-4678/5358
Fax: 484-5424

Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

Yankton Sioux

Contact a few of these tribes and who knows they may actually give you some information and who you may get in contact with when you do come to the USA

That is where I would start

Wow.

Lesson Number One: Calling a Native American woman a princess is a bummer, especially if she calls herself an evil Cherokee princess. She might log back in and find out what you called her.

Lesson Number Two: Native Americans joke a lot.

Lesson Number Three: Your original post had eight paragraphs, seven of them started with the word "I". The other said "Perhaps you don't care about me or the stories". Why should we care if you are not joining this site?

This is not an approach that works well with any people I know, native or not.

Thanx Josiah, that was really helpfull.

Storyteller.. sorry if I stepped on anyones toes. Never ment to do that. But how can a short term for a long nick, become a problem?? isent this like shooting spurrows with a gun ment for elephant hunting?

when you are a journalist and wants to work with complete strangers, one have to explain who one is and what the entensions are. allmost like a job aplication, to create trust. Since I have to explain myselfe, my background regarding writing native stories, and who I am, then how should I do that, without writing a lot of "I"?

How many people do you think would answer, if all I wrote was- stories for a magazine wanted in december? no one.. What would have been the proper way to write what I wrote, in your oppinion?

there is a great saying - let the person without sin, through the first stone.. noone is perfect, neighter me, you or anyone else. being negative towards someone you dont even know, because you dont like the writing style? Why not just be glad, that someone from the other side of the world, wants to write some honest and positive articles about the american native society?
Maybe theres a culture and a languige difference between us, but hey im trying to build a bridge. give at least that some credit, instead of just pointing your fingers at me..
meet strangers with an open heart, even if they are different from you

You are correct Susen, language can be a problem.

Here is a story about Native Americans which you are welcome to research and write about:

Between 1845 and 1850, the English Crown starved most of Ireland's population while Europe looked away. This trick followed a long land war after the British invasion and colonization of Ireland.

The Choctaw Tribe, I am told, sent shipments of food to alleviate hunger.

My Gaelic Clan in County Tipperary were the fighters who refused to ever accept defeat, hence we were starved first and fastest by the Crown. When my people came here, it was the Native Americans we respected most. After all, we shared the same enemy for the last 500 years.

This story is important in Ireland, and is retold over many hearth fires. Perhaps it would be of interest to your international readers.

thanx for sharing this with me. It is interesting knowledge.

there have been done a lot of horrible things in the past, and some is still going on. the world can be a very evil place

Storyteller.. I googled on your tribe, and found that they live in the area where hurricane Katrina was. sorry but here comes some more "I" :0)
I went to NO after Katrina as a rescueworker, to help all the abanded dogs, that was left behind. So terrible for all the familys, that was affected by the hurricanes (and the soldiers behavior).

Josiah I just want to tell you, that your adress list was very usefull, when I was in the states. I went to the Rosebud reservation, and people there was so freindly, curious and open minded. And everybody wanted to help to find, the perfect people for the stories

Totally different attitude from the way people here, reacted to my question....

I interwieved a champion grass dancer, and a birddancer. Really nice and really interesting people, who told me many educational things regarding the old traditions, and about life today.

Thanx again Josiah for your help :0)

Don't worry about SD, by the time you get there, you will be in the middle of a blizzard! Come to AZ instead where you can swim in a swimming pool during New Year's Eve and have all the tripe you want.
