Anyone on here get caught up in the wristband fiasco at Saturday night grand entry???? We didn't, we were alright, we always had our weekend passes on us when we came in and got our wristbands at the entry way, but we saw plenty of people who did get caught in that mess. I felt bad for some of those dancers, and especially the AD's who didn't have a say in that decision, but were catching all the flak from people about it. Hope they can straighten that out next year well in advance.

That was not a good situation. Not sure that the committee was involved in that decision either. Sounded like something the Cox center started doing on its own, but not sure.

The highlight of my weekend was the PowWows.com special.

A women from the Virgin Islands was also moved by it. She had come to Red Earth to purchase some artwork. After watching the first heats of our contest, she decided that the dancing was the true art!

She donated $1,500 to the our contest--$500 for each of the top 3 finishers!

And she has said she will give that money each year to add to our contest!

And then to have Bobbie win!

She was so excited to win that her hands were shaking. She and Kenny just got married in September. They had not had a chance to take their honeymoon yet. So the cruise was a dream come true for them!

ndnM,

I just heard about it.

My niece was escorted in by three people wearing green and a armed security guard to verify that she did indeed have a ticket, where she was sitting. She initially went down to the parking lot to put away her crown and realized she forgot her ticket.

Powwow people immediately came to her defense and protested to the four escorts that, "she has a contest number and is wearing a banner from a major powwow!" It became a little incident and left bad feelings!

"My niece was near tears and humiliated!!!!"

It was said that several people were not able to participate in grand entry because of the "fiasco."

HMMMMMM???

Paul you did an awesome job with the webcast. I got to watch some of it on Friday night. I think it's awesome that woman also got to see your contest special, and contributed some funds for it. To all the dancers hope you had a great time. To all the winners congrats!

WhoMe, you never cease to amaze me! You must keep your ear on the ground all the time. I thought I might see there this past week-end. I know you're along way from home.

I heard dancers were having problems getting back in, once they went out. One of those things I guess, where those TA.KOYS were doing the job they were told to do and not having a understanding of things from a dancers viewpoint.

Yeah, they were doing their job. But I've now seen this kind of thing at Gathering and Red Earth. Pow Wow Committees need to meet with arena/security staff and go over how Pow Wows operate. Every kind of event is unique and has its own set of exceptions to rules.

A little time spent with these people by the Committees would go a long way to avoiding these embarrassing and frustrating situations.

But, I was trying to console my old friend, WhoMe.

The craziest thing I saw in that fiasco was this: Jennifer Youngbear didn't have her ticket and tried to go in Grand Entry. They wouldn't let her in until she got her ticket or her wristband, they wouldn't take her number. So then one of the AD's, who had been trying to argue with the Cox Center people on behalf of the dancers, got her past the green shirts and in the grand entry line, one tall women with long curly hair went and got her and pulled her out of line. The ones in the green shirts kept saying, "It's not us, it's the Red Earth people....you need to talk to the Red Earth people." I myself think it was the convention center people, but I kept hearing them saying, "It's not us...." Jennifer made it in though, I don't know if someone gave her a ticket (she had left hers in her car in the parking garage), but she came through with a ticket, got her wristband and made it in grand entry.

One other shawl dancer was getting really agitated watching all of this....she had her wristband, but she was getting angry watching how they were treating people. When she came through grand entry she showed her wristband, and for some reason that same tall woman came right up to her and asked her again to see her wristband....the dancer really snapped at her, "It's right HERE!" and showed her her arm....THEN that lady said to the dancer, "Hey, don't you get all ugly with ME!" That was the topper for me....I couldn't believe the craziness...I don't think I had seen anything like that, at least nothing that comes to mind immediately.

It was too bad that that had to happen, regardless of whose decision it was....Red Earth was alot of fun and that just brought a real negative energy to the evening...I felt it and other dancers were feeling it also.

But aside from that, that was soooooo nice that Bobbilynn won that special!! She and Kenny are the nicest young couple I have ever known and a gift like that couldn't have happened to a nicer young lady.

dang sounds like a real aggrevating situation .. and its always someone else's fault. i would have been so blacking out .. lmao .. first person/people i would have asked for is the pow wow committee president and the supervisor for the Cox center.

we've been to pow wows held in large event centers and havnt really run into any problems with the staff - mind you we always have our tickets or wristbands on us.

but maybe a suggestion to the committee with the follow up meeting with the cox center .. that a event number could be used as an equivalent to a wrist band/ticket for dancers. thereotically you need a ticket to get in to register. so ask the committee to ask that you have to be present to register - to help with the sending in one person "to register everyone" .. lol

dang sounds like a real aggrevating situation .. and its always someone else's fault. i would have been so blacking out .. lmao .. first person/people i would have asked for is the pow wow committee president and the supervisor for the Cox center.

we've been to pow wows held in large event centers and havnt really run into any problems with the staff - mind you we always have our tickets or wristbands on us.

but maybe a suggestion to the committee with the follow up meeting with the cox center .. that a event number could be used as an equivalent to a wrist band/ticket for dancers. thereotically you need a ticket to get in to register. so ask the committee to ask that you have to be present to register - to help with the sending in one person "to register everyone" .. lol
Well, that wouldn't solve this problem. As was explained to me, some dancers were passing their numbers or badge to other people. So the wristbands were added later as an additional step to show the person had registered.

Well, they DID tell us at registration that you needed to have your pass/ticket to get in, that your dancer number would NOT get you in. You had to buy your weekend pass, which was 3 tickets, one for each day, and present a ticket each day to get in. The first day they just stamped your hand when you left with a "Friday" stamp so you could get back in. They let me register my bunch but they were careful to tell me that everyone HAD to have their ticket to get into the center, not just the dance number.

The only reason we knew to be prepared was that my daughter had to run over early to the center on Saturday morning to try and find something she left the night before and she found out that they were giving out wristbands to everyone. Maybe next year they can tell everyone at registration the deal about the wristbands instead of springing it on people mid-way through the weekend....there will still no doubt be people that will have a problem with that, but at least they can start out being consistent and try to get everyone on the same page from day one.
