A-HO!
How does that price compare to other Pow Wows for dancers? I've heard lots of people mention that Red Earth is expensive.

At Gathering I paid $31 for a weekend pass. But Gathering is just 2 days compared to Red Earth's 3 days.

Do you have to pay to dance at Gathering?

How about others?

Well i guess that price really does fall right in there with the best powwows that charge for us to get in. I can imagine what they pay to have a powwow in a facility such as the Pit or Cox but at least at GON they checked my wristband at the door and that is the last of that. At Red Earth, I showed my badge 4 times in one day! haha...the funny part is that during the gourd dance on saturday i really really wanted to sing, so i was looking for a chair and the right time to go have a seat w/the ladies...the Cox staff chased me back up the stairs! haha...she wasn't even nice about it, so i sat high and watched and enjoyed the music in the bleachers. LOL I guess its not so much the price, but how much is it really worth to hassle with all the spectators and dancers once they are in the building? Im sure they did not make much money off of that...ya think?

I personally think that paying $30 for entrance is too much, but then again I don't know how much the committee has to pay for these facilities. So maybe it really can't be any cheaper.

Schemitzun is $15 for dancer registration and (I just checked the flyer) $20 for a 4 day pass for general admission and they usually either feed dancers or give $16 in meal tickets. At the National Powwow/NMAI, it was I believe $15 or $20 for dancer admission. At Gathering, dancers don't have to pay to register and just pay admission.

Yeah, that's why I was asking to get a comparison.

But I don't think comparing to Schemitzun is fair! They do have the largest casino in the world behind the event!

They charge less because they can. They also serve a buffet meal for all dancers, singers, and staff.

And I agree $30 is high. But is it in line with other dances?

As a former Pow Wow Director, I know that committees depend on gate $ to make their budgets. I'm curious though as to what else these budgets entail.

For example Gathering boasts that they bring in over 150,000 visitors. At $30 each, that's $4,500,000. And they pay out about $100,000 in prize money. That's a huge budget for the rest of the Pow Wow. How much is rental of these facilities? Do they have to split gate fees with them?

I wish I could've went to Red Earth but with the expensive fees and two kids we couldn't go. I am really enjoying the photos though. Good job Paul. It's the next best thing to actually being there. I understand the committee needs to make $ to put on the powwow. However, from a dancer's point of view that is just outrageous. Cut us a break, the crowd comes to see dancing and singing. They should not charge to register. It's like we're paying for our own contest prizes. And onto another topic- where are the contest results? Did anyone get ahold of that info? Thanks.

The committee told me I would have them emailed to me yesterday. But I still haven't received them. I'll call again today.

Red Earth's registration fee was to purchase a 3-day pass as a dancer, which was $20 for the weekend. Kids 5 or 6 and under were free. You had to purchase the 3-day pass before you registered. You could've gotten a break and pre-registered and got like 4-5 dollars off the registration/admission fee, but you had to do that before a date in May and there were no refunds if you decided not to come.

I don't think that registration fee is that bad, not when someplace like Denver March charges about the same for the weekend pass, plus you have to pay $25 to get a little permit just so you can videotape, then you can't bring your own water or food in, AND you have to pay to get a parking pass for the weekend. I think it's about the same everywhere at a powwow that size. I know the facility charges alot of money in personnel, equipment, insurance, etc. at all of these places.

Sorry folks, I have no problem paying that kind of money, family and all, if that's the powwow I want to attend. There are plenty of powwows that don't charge any admission fee or registration fee, but they are outside where it's hot, have to deal with the wind, humidity, heat, rain, bugs, etc. I'll pay the extra money to be in air-conditioning with a dry floor where my kids will be comfortable, and where there are indoor bathrooms...lol. These are luxury powwows to me. I love my at-home outside celebrations, but sometimes it's just nice to be indoors with a bunch of good drums and tons of good dancers.

Can't wait to see those videos! We didn't have any time to record while messing with our little ones and I haven't been able to catch much from the rebroadcast except a grand entry and all the junior and teen contests.

hey paul!

when you are filming the contests, is it possible to do a span over the entire contest more often? A lot of times the camera was focused in on only a few dancers and we couldn't see everybody.

But thanks for the Webcasts because we could stay at home and watch the pow-wow w/o paying entrance and travel fees. haha
That was very cool.

I'll try to do that more.

The problem with pans is that they don't show up well online. You loose a lot of detail when panning.

I was just listing the Schemitzun price tag and what that buys since you asked! I'm not really advocating for their price because with the biggest casino, you'd think they could do better LOL- compare to the powwow the weekend before! In the admission price arena, they are upstaged by the Mohegan Wigwam powwow, which is also an outdoor powwow under the big top. They have free registration, free admission for all, and a really good, huge lunch and dinner for registered dancers and singers. The Mohegan powwow also is held at their tribal grounds with a building where you can go inside to the bathroom (not just porta john's like Schemitzun) which is a HUGE improvement to me :) And they're not even the biggest casino! Just another comparison.

The "tall curly headed" lady works for the Cox Center. I don't know her last name but her first name is Robin. She wouldn't let us take food into the Cox Center. She said we had to eat it outside the ropes. So I guess the webcast would need to be able to run on autopilot then? lol.....don't think so. I'm not a big fan of the Cox Center staff. And a few of the Red Earth committee members I could do without, too.

I hope they do some pro-active about the pass/bracelet situation next year. With a little planning things like that could be avoided. Dancer Hospitality was dumped off on the Artist people this year and it did not go well on Friday morning. Saturday and Sunday were a little smoother.

I'd like to have some of those headphones things that the AD's had to use for the new fancy cameras....hahaha....
