Non contest PW's

My family goes to the 'Wildhorse ' PW here in L.A., it's held at a Torrance H.S. on Valentine weekend. It's a very relaxed PW and kicks off the season here in So. Cali. Usually it's the same families you see every year, the number of vendors is scaled way down, usually 1 food booth that's priced right and the food is good.

Almost every year someone has a coming out special, and there's always a 'cake plate' dance. It's a chance to catch-up with what's going on with everyone and like others said, no pressure about points, or who's judging. I really like it, the small kids can run around and everyone looks after the kids together. The neighboring community and kids who go to the HS come in, look and leave, there's no tourist asking for pics all day long. There's 1 or 2 blanket dances, but most of the time the people there actually know the family or person the dance is for, so that makes it nice.

I've never been to a non-Casino rez PW, but people tell me Wildhorse PW is kinda like the ones they have 'backhome'.

I love to go to powwows either way. I love to dance and there I can dance not only for the fun of it but also for my people. I dance in honor of my Mother and Grandmother and all who cannot dance now, I dance for them not for the money.

I just love to powwow... lol I love the traveling and new places when I travel to a contest powwow. But I try and make it to just about any lil non contest powwows here in town. So for me I just like to go for the powwow of it whether it be contest or non contest.

Any powwow is just fine for me and my family. My lil one dances and he just closes his eyes and let's it all go when he's out there in the arena. In contest powwows there are not enough intertribals or exhibitions he can go out there and just strut his lil stuff (he's only 5) so that's the only downsize to it all. If he had it his way he'd be dancin all day and night without skippin a beat.

I like non-traditional powwows though mainly because its so relaxed and you get to dance more. I wish more BIG NAME dancers/singers would go to these, it would show that they do care more about powwowing than money. Plus the little ones can see how its done :D.

Here in NM there are alot of lil powwows and nontraditional powwows we go to, its always fun to be around familiy and friends. That's who makes us stronger :D.

GON is fun but you only get to dance 1-2 time a day. *S* Unless your a die hard and stay past 2am on sat night when they are gettin their tallies up they'll have a few intertribals... Great singing.....you had to go out there and dance even if you were sooooooo tired....LOL I think I saw a couple of dancers 'sleep dancing'. ayeeeee. Yeah yeah you know who you are....

Local powwows

The only contest powwow I usually ever make it to is Denver March because I live in Denver, I haven't had the opportunity to travel the last few years that I've been in school, now I'm done so I'm thinking of starting to travel for a few months and then possibly go back to school. I go to small local powwows all the time though there are quite a few little ones here in Denver throughout the year.

Barrel Full of Monkeys ... he used to use that name only when it was the kids singing by themselves but I think he dropped doing that. LOL

As far as western Washington goes, there are alot of good powwows AND there are alot of powwows that I find DOWNRIGHT NEW AGEY. Notice my avatar! There is a certain MC/AD team that seem to specialize in smaller, traditional powwows on the Peninsula and the South Sound region, and they have a constant following of over-ceremonializing hinkie wannabe's. Or so it seems.

I like non-contest powwows, because I lead a kids' drum. First, the big contest powwows often restrict the non-contest drums to intertribals. And even when they don't, there are so many that show up that you still get to sing maybe once or twice in a day. And the contest powwows (rightfully) get uptight if the kids aren't "spot-on" keeping the beat. There is a little more room for "error" at small tradish powwows.

I go to non-contest pow wows mostly, but still love to attend the contest ones if they aren't far.

I keep reading that people like non contest powwows because money isn't such a huge issue. I don't know where most of you are from but in my area as soon as it comes time for honorariums or payouts people stand around and compare and then start complaining about not getting enough. I 've also been on many powwow committees and when we pay out we see how greedy people are. Some drummers will set up four drums when basically it's the same guys singing on each drum or we get the dancers who get dressed to sign up, go get undressed and then dance for payouts only sometimes they don't even make the song and miss it all together and still come over and get mad because we won't pay them trying to claim that they made it but "forgot" to get in line. At a non contest everyone gets paid unless you choose to not get in line.
Contest powwow's only have so many places and way more dancers and so only the ones who are fortunate enough to place are the only ones to get paid it's tough luck for the others who have spent gas, lodgings and food to get to the powwow. Most dancers know this and yet some complaing might happen about points, it's not as much as a non contest. Plus you get the drummers singing hard and dancers dressed to the hilt and dancing their hardest. I like contest much better because people aren't trying to "out traditional" each other. Most dancers at contest already have money in case they don't win because they know it's a gamble to go and not get in. But that's just my opinion don't take it to heart. If you think I'm wrong come to a non contest where I'm from and observe the behind the scenes action.

I don't know where you're from pinkflower, but that's not the way they are here.

The people who come to our local powwow have been real friendly... I've never seen a bunch of folks getting all upset over not getting monetary kickback for something. The pow wow is put on to raise funds for the program and people come to enjoy themselves. Most of the dances are intertribal, but all are for enjoyment.

I seriously don't expect to receive anything from anyone at any pow wow. I do not do the contests. Occasionally I get a nice surprise when someone decides to do a giveaway... but I go expecting to have fun and see all the people I haven't seen since the last pow wow.

That must be nice but that sure doesn't happen here. It would be nice to hold a pow wow to raise money but that won't happen in my area. Maybe I'll check out a pow wow in your area!
