I know some folks do get in because of who they are sometimes...sometimes. But give credit where credit is due. Some people really are really good dancers and that is why they place so often.

Even at small pow-wows with contests judged by people who are not in the so called "in" crowd and don't travel out, I have seen these "in" people still win because they are good, and people recognize that.

Like I said, some of the winners deserve to win cuz they can dance. But everyone here knows that sometimes people win because they can bullsh*$, politic, have a familiar last name, or all of the above. That's just what happens at pow wows. I never said I could pick the order of the winners, but could probably pick who's gonna place after the first grand entry. Plus, it don't matter whose paid their "dues", it doesn't mean that you can come any where and win just because.

Yeah, I agree w/North of Ada & Kneegrow. I'm of the opinion that people
place because they're GOOD.

Granted, some pww committees are biased
and blatantly judge on a personal basis.
That crap happens and gives powwows a
bad rep.

Generally speaking, winners
are winners due to their talent.

(Yes, I'm naive)

Ignorance is bliss.

powwows are very political no matter where you go. some dancers that place are very deserving, but we all know that they're not always deserving. if dancers were actually judged for their ability at that point in time I think that some of the "in" people would not place. It would also help if judges didn't only watch a select crowd and watched/judged everyone out there, unless of course they really don't know what to look for and are only selecting dancers that are in the "in" crowd.

As for griping, it's not about griping. It's just telling the truth. And if you think its griping, then you must be one of those who are "in" there every weekend.

Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty good pow wow and I had a good time. It's the fact that when it comes down to contesting, the winners have already been decided.

who is it or they - Dances with wolves, Man called horse or Little Big Man

Maybe everyone should wear a mask and wear the same type of outfits so we can all see the abilities of the dancers - footwork, fan action, style and grace. That way, there won't be any favoritism. Maybe we can download the steps to the songs that will be sang at the next pow-wow just so we ar prepared when we get there. You show up at the pow-wow and register, check out your outfit and mask, then tear it up. whatever. Let the people dance. Just because you, your family or your friends didn't win doesn't mean there are favorites. Or maybe someone secretly wants to dance, hmm. It's so funny.

I dunno bout the "dues" part..you cant tell me that you never seen a dancer who absolutely has no business placing but ends up cleaning up due to either family, his "stature" in powwow circles or whatever..I seen it a few times on the trail, some dude who places 1st who somehow tore up "big name" dancers because he or she is liked in the area. Kills the powwow in my veiw...but I dont wanna Gripe cause there are alot of really good dancers who are "big names" who rightfully do deserve to win...and if they are the best dancer that weekend..then give em there props and crown em.
