LOL You guys are too much! I walked right into that one!
![]() There was this sound and I was told it was the Elk whistle carrier and then I saw a bunch of people around a drum but I just kept on dancing around the arena... It was explained to me that this was the Elk whistle sound and that when he made the sound it's an honoring. I didn't see much so I was wondering who got the whistle? Maybe I misunderstood. |

28th Anniversary Black Hills Powwow - Rapid City, SD
Just returned from 28th Anniversary Black Hills Powwow in Rapid City, SD. Temperatures in the 70’s compared to a raging snow storm last year. Very well attended. The archery tournament was spot on awesome! Some of the best range shooting I’ve seen in a long time.
The Fine Arts Show started off as a market, but when organizers promoted a Fine Arts Contest, the good stuff came out. Artists were asked to provide two pieces of their work for judging and the winner’s art would be featured as next year’s poster background for the 29th Annual Powwow. The organizers were the judges and no People’s Choice voting was allowed. As of Sunday, still didn’t know whose art was chosen. Guess we’ll have to wait till next year to find out. Not seeing Don Montileaux and Vic Runnels artwork at the show was sorely missed . Was fortunate enough to visit with Richard Red Owl and his wife. Competition dancing in all categories was tight. Like watching the Indian National Finals Rodeo, drum groups kept us dancing with little or no idle time between sets. Visited with a lot of my friends. I don’t have any results of the Men’s Northern Traditional competition as I had to catch the last flight out of Rapid City back to PDX via SLC. |
