Looking for Funding... Any Ideas?
I am looking into the possibility of running a New Year's Sobriety Pow Wow in Southern Ohio that would also serve as a way of supporting a local school music program, and replacing the old sobriety pow wows in Columbus that have ceased operation. I think I can secure the facility, (a local high school gymnasium that the music program in question is from.) which would be a great facility (its a brand new high school that opens this fall) and I am looking for possible grants/funding sources to help make it a reality. I'm looking for enough money to pay head staff and put them up in a hotel for two nights, cover custodial costs and help pay for a big feed on New Years Eve.
I have been saddened since I got back to Ohio that the New Year's Eve Sobriety Pow Wow in Columbus went down just before I moved back, and now the closest one I know of is in Indianapolis. I am looking at a possible price tag of 8 to 11 thousand to put it on, and I am trying to brain storm for possible funding options. There are no reservations here in Ohio, and no casinos like I could have asked back in Washington when I lived there. The Indian Centers here are pretty taxed financially putting on their own pow wows/events/programs and I don't want to ask them. I have checked in to the Ohio Arts Council and most of their grant deadlines have already passed... does anyone else have any ideas? If not I may just have to wait until December of 2007. Any ideas/help would be much appreciated! |

An idea...
my company recently received an order for t-shirts for a pow wow in Bay City. you may want to do a fundraiser such as selling t-shirts with native american & musical picture on them stating why you are selling the t-shirts. you could have a large garage sale or host a car wash/garage sale. those are always big hits around her. you could ask local businesses to make small donations too. you might ask the kids & all necessary people about putting on a fundraiser where the kids perform & you take donations at the door. i hope this may have given you some viable options. May you have a blessed day & your music program be saved.

I have had a few ideas about starting/reviving an Ohio Sobriety Powwow for New Years Eve for a while. My thoughts on this however, stray away from the commercial type powwow - making it more of an opportunity for NDN folks in the community to come together for good singing, dancing, sobriety, community - and of course good food.
It seems like there would be enough of us (in Ohio and around) interested in a good pw for New Year's that we could donate/contribute for food and perhaps funds to make something like this happen. Maybe for starters - you could get headstaff that would be interested/willing to donate their time for such an event. And as time goes and the pw continues to grow, perhaps you would then want to open it up to more of the public event. Although this doesn't address your interest in supporting the local high school music program, I have shared my thoughts. You can e-mail me if I can be of some help! |
