NMAI 2005 National Pow Wow

It's now 11:00 and I'm back at the hotel after a full day at the NMAI National Pow Wow.

The museum has now set a high standard for future events. I can only hope they will have this Pow Wow on a regular basis.

There are about 450 dancers and 10 drums. The staff has done a great job planning this event. The day went very smoothly. Everything was wrapped up and over by 10:20 pm. I haven't been to many dances that can stay that close to schedule!!

This evening they featured original dancers in each category. This was quite a site. I have video of each one that I'll be uploading over the next week.

In drum competition all I can say in North Carolina is putting themselves on the map for the home of great drums. If things continue tommorrow as today, 3 drums from NC will place--Stoney Creek, Southern Sun, and Kau Tau Nau Jr's.

Thanks to the staff for thier hospitailtiy. And it was great seeing all of you PowWows.com'ers today.

I have over an hour of video and several hundred photos to start working on. Look for them to start being uploaded soon.

Check this link for the photos and video:

http://www.powwows.com/galleries/sho...ry.php?cat=575

Thanks!

I got a call tonight from the powwow...... NDN KIDZ, Singing Otter and Lapis Queen. Wooooo hooooo!! Was really a sweet thought! Made me feel good and apart of things just a little.

KIDZ gave me a blow by blow of the womens Norther Traditional then passed the phone to Otter so she could take a photo for me. Otter then finished telling me what was going on. Really sounded great!

Wish I could have been there........ hopefully next year!

Thumbs down Bummed about the pow wow

I participated in last years event and found it to be really great. I guess because there were so many people from so many different Nations. I have a little different perspective on this years event, but I don’t want to sound negative. This years pow wow was different, I didn’t dance this year I just wanted to sit back and enjoy, which I don’t often get to do. The dancers, pow wow staff, drums, emcee’s were great. Many very talented people, awesome regailia, great music. My wife and I even enjoyed the younger folks who were rapping and break dancing prior to grand entry. It was awesome until after grand entry.

I went to get something to eat, and as with most pow wow’s, not enough good food vendors (NDN type). The line for the real food (fry bread) was way too long. I opted for the less desirable fast food sold by the MCI center. 5 chicken strips, fries, and a coke $18 dollars. First downer.

I wanted to check out the vendors, there were many. I thought there would be a very diverse vendor crowd, hard to tell what one might find. However, there must have been 10000 shoppers, and all of them stepped right in front of me every time I found something of interest. You could barely walk through the area. The only thing I bought was an event t-shirt. Second downer.

The final straw was when a young man, who was recuperating from wounds sustained in combat, was being honored by all. Being a disabled combat vet, color guard member, and gourd dancer, I wanted to go down and honor him and say welcome home. The Emcee even invited us to the floor to do so. But the MCI staff would not allow us on the floor. I spoke with the powwow organizer, Jackie, who stated they had the same problem on Friday. She was great, went right to the radio made contact with the facility staff supervisor, problem solved right? Wrong!

About an hour later I went to see the young man and try to get some pics of another color guard who were looking really good (beautiful young ladies, etc) most of whom I knew. Another MCI staff member stepped in front of me, got rude, and wouldn’t let me shake hands or take pictures. He asked me if I had the “credentials” to be in the area and further stated several times quite coarsely, your not going back there. What the heck is that? I tried to explain the whole cultural thing to him, and he continued to be rude. 150 years ago and his hair would have been adorning a pole outside my lodge. Third downer, I didn’t even stay for gourd dancing.

If it is at the MCI center, or any place staffed by non-Natives, I won’t go back. If you’re not a contestant, I wouldn’t recommend going. Although the museum is trying to do a good thing, I think a lot gets lost when the important cultural things are ignored by folks who couldn’t give a crap about our traditions. This was not a “family event" as a pow wow should be!

Sorry to hear about the problems you had. I would definately contact WhoMe so they could plan better for thier next event.

This, unfortunately, is not going to be an annual event.

I thought they did a pretty good job with the food vendors. There were always pretty large lines, however, there were lots of vendors compared to other large pow wows I've been too. I walked just outside the door and found a McDonalds, Hagen Daz, Star Bucks and more!

As for shopping, I thought there would be more vendors. And more high quality vendors like a Red Earth. I didn't have any problems getting to them to shop. But maybe because I'm comparing it to Gathering where it is shoulder to shoulder on the concourse.

And on the security. At an event like Gathering, they hire a Native firm to handle the security. This doesn't make it that much better, from what I've found. The security where I was this weekend seemed to be understanding with the audience. They let people come down and take a few photos and then would ask them to take thier seats. And as it got later, it became very lacks.

I would agree with you especially when it comes to the "credentials". My husband and myself were there on the arena floor for 2 hours with no problem and some lady with the MCI center wanted to walk up after seeing us watching the drums and said "you are not allowed down here" my husband said well " I have family and friends down here I drove to see" she more or less said she didnt care we needed to be in the stands. We were highly ticked, in a better word, and left to get a smoke in and a breather. Well come to find out if you look at your ticket, it says open seating and there was nothing posted saying you have to either have a badge, or red band. So that made me mad, they should have better wording on that but that's my opinion. But loved singing and dancing. AWESOME!!!

I, too, had a wonderful time as you all had.

Friday night, I watched the most beautiful sunset as I sat on the shoreline and then I went and rested up after sitting in the hot tub for a bit. I registered Fri. nite so I wouldn't encounter a line up the next morning. ($5.00 fee)

The hotel gave us $5.00 coupons for the casino and a 1/2 off breakfast buffet coupon so.......... breakie was free. My room rate was $55.00 a night (no tax).

The powwow location was centered in a lovely little valley surrounded by pine trees and poplar. You could take great pictures from the top of the valley overlooking the dance area. Beautiful!!

The security was great! All native. They took one look at you and let us pass with a "have a great weekend!" greeting. Ample, free parking! And........ all the great vendors!!! Wow. And great prices! Even some gooooooood Mexican food for sale.

The community sponsored feast! It was DELICIOUS! Chicken and gravy, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, watermelon, and drinks. Great, great hospitality.

About 250 dancers. 8 drums. Real laid back. No rushing. No need for a canopy for us. We sat in the shade of a beautiful 100 ft. pine tree.

People were so friendly. Not being party-ers, I can't comment on how that went, but all I can say is, I never heard any bad reports.

All-in-all a real nice weekend. No rain. Tempuratures hovered around the 75 to 80 degree range. Nice breeze coming in from Lake Michigan. Total cost for me and the missus. About $160.00. Very pleasing to the pocket book.

Harbor Springs, Michigan. You guys should check it out!

Talking One Great Pow Wow

Aside from the downers JimGreyOwl mentioned, this one has to go down in my books as Fantastic!.

Saturday was my only day there. The line to buy tickets around Grand Entry time was so looooong, you had to stand outside at the end (90+ degrees and 100% humidity). But a very nice girl was kind enough to sell me her extra ticket for $10 (not $12 being charged at the tix booth), very big THANKS to who ever she was. I only stood in line for 2 minutes.

Paul was in action, snapping photos and running the video equipment. This guy worked his behind off, he showed much dedication. Thanks Paul for recording the moments.

I danced all the intertribals (no regalia), shaking hands with ppl from places that I met along the PW trail; and was invited to dance the Owl/Rabbit/Snake dances with a visitor from Austria.

They also held a Moment of Silence for the Jack family and said some kind words on their behalf.

You're welcome! I had a blast.
