Arrow Shinnecock Powwow

Good weather for a change at Shinnecock. NO RAIN!!!!!!YEAH!!

Less Dancers than last year.

Nice Concert on Friday Night!!! Cool Music!!!!!

Competition was not exciting (adult categories only had one song)

???????Ivan Lone Child placed first in men's grass, Ginew Benton placed second when he should have placed first and Delwin & Bryan (Blue regalia & won Schemitzun in 1994) should have placed too?????????????? :34:

Categories had predetermined winners

Dancers who did not place should have!!!!!!!!

Some of the people who placed couldn't dance at all!!!

Judging problems in almost every category

Inexperienced judges

Lightfoot performed and he grass danced

Drums - Sacred Leader(host), Mystic River(co-host), Young Guns, Silver Cloud, Commod Squad - Drum Competition can't remember who placed.

Big Brawl on Saturday night. Watch out!!! Bottles Flying & windows getting smashed. People going to the hospital. Hope they are okay. We had to move our campsite twice.

Congrats to:

Vera Addi- Women's Southern Traditional
Ginew Benton-Men's Grass
Winners of the specials (Traditional & Fancy)
Drew Lyn- Jr. Men's Grass
Alex Loeb - Jr. Men's Grass
Peanut Roberts - Jr. Men's Grass

From what I can remember.....................it really was a trip!

Next Year need to:

2. More Security

3. Better Judges (Professionals)

4. Add more Specials (Old Style Jingle, Chicken Dance, Switch Dance, Team Dance, Eastern WoodlandsTraditional -Buckskin dresses, Trick Song Special (All Fancy Dancers).

5. Count points from exhibitions & spot checks

6. Competition - 2 songs for each category

7. 2 consulation spots in each category

Ivan Lonechild is a good dancer, a traditional man and has earned respect during his many years of dancing. How about a little respect, Hachi?

A brawl? I don't get it. I thought that the hosts try to welcome the visitors and show them hospitality. Not scare the crap out of them.

Confused???

Okay some of you may be a little confused about my post. Let me be clear there were a lot of very good dancers there and yes most powwows now a days are rigged whether you want to believe it or not. This was so rigged that kids were talking about how bad it was. Also what do you mean about sliding my name in there..... I did not even compete at Shinnecock, I was chillin' but I did pay attention to the competition. Every now & then it is good to sit back & watch. I did however place at Schemitzun. I have respect for good dancers and people who put their heart into what they do, so do not assume that I am a disrespectful person. I was looking at the competition for pure dance not the big name of the dancer or how many people they know. I guess you had to be there to get the big picture!!!!! I am glad that other people agree with me.

i was there also, and yes they did have the same judges that judged the same contest both days, as they will undoubtly pick the same dancers they do need to change the judges, but i do think all in all it was fair except for this fact. also if they do make a 18 to 35 catorgie they need to raise the age on golden age to 60 or so, so the age difference will even out. as always the security was bad, when will they get this under control, when alot of people get hurt, also they seemed to have run off certian tribes as say the nagarresents sorry for the spelling. as they were none in the blacket dances, only 2 in the heart of this catories land. something is very wrong.

I know Ivan and he is a great dancer, there's no need to question his winning on here. Sometimes the winners come out the way we think they will and sometimes they don't, that's how it is with powwows. But I know Ivan dances hard all the time.

Heehee!

I was there all 4 days and was able to see it from a lot of different ummm....perspectives shall we say :) There was a lot of issues with the winners. It wasn't even a Shinnecock preference, the judges just have their favorites. My best friend danced and was really ripped off, but that's how it goes. If I can get my hands on a list of all the winners I'll put it up. Here are a few I do know:

Mens Smoke Dance, 3rd place: Sean Yazzi
Womens Smoke Dance, 1st place: Melanie Tompaho (spelling)
Drum, 2nd Place: Silvercloud
Girls Traditional, 1st place: Tarlyn Tompaho
Boys Traditional, 1st place: Preston (Buddy) Tompaho jr.
Womens Blanket, 1st place: Ayana Smith

There are some definate security issues going on that need to be fixed. As always, Shinnecocks and Narrangansetts were fighting...happens every year!

The concert friday night was awesome, but I'm a little biased. My boyfriend's mom sings with the Thunderbird Sisters. I didn't think I would like Irene Bedard's music, but ended up really enjoying it.

Hachi....Where are you from? Are you Shinnecock?

Yeah Sunshine did get ripped off. My friend is Tohanash Tarrant, I'll be adding some pics of her from the pw sometime this week. She dances Women Shawl. My boyfriend (her brother) was singing with Silvercloud. The rest of the siblings that were in town also danced. Sampwe took 2nd in Boys Fancy. Did you happen to catch their little "oops" announcing the wrong first place winner in Womens Shawl? Do you anything about what went down saturday night? I was walking around, but all seemed quiet.

Yeah, Tohanash is a good dancer....Sorry, I do not have all the details about Saturday night but I know people got hurt and had to go to the hospital for their injuries. Hope those people are okay.

Cool

winners please!!!!! respect please!!!!!!!
powwows should be fun not hatered and cheating, the arena should be artistic dancing not who u are?? the powwow across the usa lowered standards for contest dancing. champions dance, not walk around , seems like polictics and really stinks for the most part. ( nothing is personal just business) i miss the old days

I went to Shinnecock when there was no contest and I went when there was a contest and everytime I was treated fairly and with the best hospitality by the Shinnecock people. I have many friends there and they work hard to put on a good pow wow because they love pow wow. Ginew is probably the last person who would complain because someone who traveled 2500 miles to be at Shinnecock placed ahead of him. Contest results don't determine how good a dancer is, it just tells us who the judges noticed. Our hearts tell us how well we danced. Congratulations to ALL winners and Shinnecock for their fine pow wow tradition.

Exclamation This is what people are talking about.......

Quote:

If you are gonna have a dance contest why shouldn't they determine dancers ability. Then it is not really a dance contest but a popularity contest. Right?
Just because someone comes from a long distance to a powwow doesn't mean they should automatically win over dancers with more ability. Powwows should be fair regardless of where a dancer comes from. The playing field should be even and fair with no prior bias before the competition starts. Judges should choose dancers based on ability and what they see at the time of competition. This is the kind of stuff that people are talking about on another thread rigged powwows. People have a lot to say about unfair powwow practices and their experiences (check it out). Powwows have a long way to go before they really become fair level playing fields. But who knows if that will ever happen. Just keep on dancin' no matter what!!!
