Song dedications & eclectic music history

WAY back before most of you were born,…back in the 1950’s & 1960’s when 45 records were used, it was popular for teens to phone into radio stations, and request a particular song to be played. Teens would pick a song that “talked” to someone they named. mostly “love” songs or “broken hearted” songs were requested.

you had to give the name of the person, who the song was being played for, and who it was from. the radio announcer would then say the name of the record that was to be played, then the persons name it was dedicated to, then from who. of course all the teens would hang together to hear who was going steady with who and how others felt about them. it was lots of fun for the most part.

it was a great gimmick to get teens to listen to the radio station that did this. I think that the time has come again, to try this. i hope that you find a song to dedicate to a member here, post their name, and kick back to listen, as we lucky ones did waaay back when. the easiest place to bring music from is youtube. i will start this off on the next post.

Last edited by APACHEFIRE; 11-07-2011 at 12:43 PM.. Reason: no body is making dedications. but i have been posting some historical moments in music.

to some MAN out there, some place

the records i choose will most likely all be from back in that time. its the music i prefer and i thought you might enjoy seeing what the styles were back then. can you believe your mom or grandmother might have wore her hair like this? or wore these types of clothes? oh, and about 99% of these songs ARE the originals. you may hear them today, but they are the REMAKES of another generation.

this is an example of a “dedication song"

DEDICATED to the one i love—REMAKE

THIS is the remake done by the MAMAS & PAPAS in the 1960’s. it was very popular with the ‘new hippy’ sounds, of the same song, as the ones done by the SHIRELLES & FIVE ROYALES, and many others over the years.

this one goes out to EYES from..APACHEFIRE

this is from the popular 1960’s show SHINDIG!

"The story goes that Neil Sedaka and his partner Howard Greenfield were chatting one day, and Howie quipped that they were having such success that they could write "Happy Birthday" and make a hit of it. Neil seized on the idea and recorded this song supposedly as a tribute to Annette Funicello. The song skyrocketed to #6 on the Billboard charts and claimed a place on Sedaka's Greatest Hits album in 1963. Enjoy!"

dedicated to ‘TROUBLE' from—APACHEFIRE

P.S. for those of you who havent met her yet, TROUBLE is a member of powwows.com, be sure to look for her..she is really fun! OK enough with the shmoozin…on with the music!

"Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 August 16, 1977) was an American singer, musician and actor. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name ELVIS. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply “THE KING".

"Trouble" is a rock & roll song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Elvis Presley performed the song in the 1958 motion picture King Creole, and his recording was included on the soundtrack of the same name. "Trouble", featuring Scotty Moore on guitar, was one of only three songs written by Leiber and Stoller for the feature. Presley's performance in the film alludes to Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley. "If you're looking for trouble," he intones, "then look right in my face. Because I'm evil. My middle name is Misery." Music critic Maury Dean suggests that "Trouble," with Presley's "growling snarl," is one of the earliest proto-punk rock songs."

1950’s dance moves—THE STROLL

ASK YOUR PARENTS ABOUT THIS ONE.
On a local television dance show in Idaho in February 1958, local teens dance to one of the biggest dance crazes out of the late-1950's called The Stroll, which originated from American Bandstand. This dance was performed in a line formed with boys on one side and girls on the other, creating an isle between them. The boy and girl in the front of the line would meet up in the middle, grab hands and stroll their way down the line, as the other kids in the line would move their way up to the front using the same dance steps that the couple moving down the line would use, but move from side to side instead. When the first couple made their way down the line, another couple would meet in the middle and stroll down the isle.

The dance was born before the song, and had it not been for an idea of American Bandstand's Dick Clark, the song may never have been. Dick noticed the kids were "line dancing" to a song by Chuck Willis called "C.C. Rider", and he needed more musical material than just the one song and ultimately a few others for the kids to do this dance. He enlisted the aid of singer Brook Benton who put pen to Dick's idea, and "The Stroll" was born. The Diamonds were given the opportunity to record this not long after their hit of "Little Darlin", and the song shot to #4 in January of 1958.

Today, a new version of The Stroll is done in the form of a group line dance, but this is how it was done originally.

Heres how your parents or grandparents stayed is such great shape!

i dont know if there are any places like this anymore…a safe place where teens could go to dance, have lots of fun, see their friends and be on TV! how exciting it would be in school the next day. sure would make a great REALITY SHOW for todays audience, if it could be pulled off.

Charleston contest

JUST A SHORT CLIP TO GIVE YOU THE IDEA. CAN YOU IMAGINE DANCING LIKE THAT FOR SEVERAL HOURS AT A TIME?
"The Charleston was the dance that captured the spirit of the 1920s. It was danced with wild abandon by a new generation of independent young Americans, to the new hot jazz that was flooding the country.

The dance began in Charleston, South Carolina, the city from which it takes its name. In 1923, The Charleston was featured in the Broadway show Runnin Wild, one of the biggest hits of the decade. The song from the show - James P. Johnsons tune The Charleston - spread the fad across the nation and onwards to the rest of the world. Josephine Baker became famous for performing the Charleston in Paris in the 1920s. The Charleston is both a solo and partnered dance, both wildly exuberant and exciting to watch. As the hot jazz of the 1920s gave way to the swingin jazz of the 1930s and 40s, the partnered version of Charleston evolved into Lindy Hop."

The fabulous flappers

"A bit about the 1920s...
-The Economy was booming- living standards and spending rose.
-They were a time of relief after the devastation of WW1, peace, relaxation and discovery.
- Known as the Roaring 20's - flappers lifestyle was fun, free and flirty
- Popular music included Jazz such as Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong & King Oliver
-The Film industry was rapidly growing- silent films featuring charlie chaplin, buster keaton, harry langdon, laurel and hardy and harold lloyd were very popular.
- Some women were 'flappers' they smoked, drank and were hedonistic- they often had cropped, bobbed hair, wore heavy makeup, short dresses and danced the popular dances such as The Charleston, Shimmy & Bunny Hug
- Sadly the Great Depression swept across the states in the 1930s as a result of the 1929 stock market crash on Wall St , the partying lifestyle of the flapper could not survive in the same way as it had in the twenties.
- Although the 1920s are long gone, I firmly believe that they were a fabulous time and the spirit of the flapper remains in society today- women were liberated in the 1920s and so for that I must thank the flappers of the roaring 20's they are a fine example of free and independant women.
-The 1920s looked so much fun, I don't think they'll ever be forgotton."
