Columbus confusion

So I came across some confusing information. I always knew Columbus was a terrible human. I also knew that people already knew the world was not flat. What confused me, and is embarrassing to admit, I didn't know he never was in what is now known as the United States. Instead he found the Bahamas and the island later named Hispaniola.

So did he never interact with Native Americans? Just the indigenous of those Islands? Who was the first to come up to the current US after 1492? Thanks for any help.

Well, the Vikings were in L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland some time around 990-1050 CE. But in the post Columbian era, John Cabot sailed from Bristol to the North American coast in 1493. The next major incursion in North America was the expedition to Florida led by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513.

As we have been discussing on another thread, the terms American Indian and Native American tend to be context dependent. It's all going to depend on where you draw your mental Venn diagrams around those terms. On his first visit, the Lost Guy and his crew visited/raided/infected parts of the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, and maybe the Turks and Caicos. On his second trip he added Puerto Rico, Jamaica the US and British Virgin Islands, and parts of the Lesser Antilles. His third trip included Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and Venezuela. After clearing up his legal difficulties, he sailed to Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
