That's what happened to 50 right before the war started, but it turned out okay. The latest news around the capitol is to bring the number of troops deployed to a smaller number, we'll see what happens. That lady, Sheehan and her supporters were arrested too this weekend in Texas! Haven't been paying too much attention to the news lately, been tooooooo busy with my studies. Hey NdnSoldierBoy, what's up? How are you? Once the holidays past, I'll be back on this site again, for now just checking in. LOL.

See ya'll.

Doing okay in the big ole kitty litter box..

got about 10 or 9 more months? not sure really...yeah, it sux here, but glad I'm here doing some fighting...it pays the bills. I can tell you this, I'm glad I ain't no stinkin' pogue...FOBBITS and admin weenie's...how can the gov. give these guys combat pay when they ain't doing any fighting? There should be a system where if you go out the wire you get combat pay for how many times you go out the wire....I know I'd have some fatpockets right now, if the gov. paid me on how many times I go out the wire.
and the pogues wouldn't get shyt...if your scared, say your scared...

I just found out a buddy from high school is headed to Afganastan around the first of the year. He's in the guard from Kentucky. He did a year at Gitmo right after everything got started. They told him he'd be in the sand for at least a year.

Good to see you're still hangin in there Soldierboy!!!!!

Thanx it has and hasn't been easy for sure...but glad I'm here doing my job. But then again, who ever said being in the military is easy?

Let see news...already been reported. over 2000 deaths now. and still climbing at last count it was 2106...but I think as long as we stay the course and not show we are intimidated by terrorists, we'll do just fine. I know we have killed alot and captured alot of the bad guys.

...and posting here to say its election time in Iraq...this is a big time thing for everyone involved. Will the troops finally get to go home in 2006? Will the fighting even end? Will the Iraqi Gov. handle it business? Will I get to make it to Las Vegas for my 15 days of leave in March? maybe...we'll see...

The current # of troops is around 150,000 or so... and we got troops leaving here. Is it a sign? Must be. But everyone has to remember, the war on terrorism isn't over once folks leave Iraq, or Afghanistan. And we could be back here again.

And in the news from here...we have the 3rd ID (Mech) leaving now...and the 4th ID taking over the AO. Good luck to those soldiers who arrived recently, and god speed to those who left and return to their families back in the land of the big PX.

And to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, RIP.

Army news

Soldiers May Be Reimbursed for Protective Gear
Army News Service | Paul Cucuzzella | January 13, 2006
WASHINGTON - Soldiers may now file claims and receive reimbursement for protective equipment privately purchased between Sept. 11, 2001, and July 31, 2004.

A provision of the 2005 Defense Authorization Act allows for the reimbursement if service members weren’t issued equivalent equipment prior to deployment in Operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom.

No armor shortage now

There is no need anymore for Soldiers to purchase protective equipment on their own, said Col. Thomas W. Spoehr, director of Materiel for the Army’s G8.

“There are no shortages; in fact there is excess in the theater to accommodate lost, damaged or otherwise missing body armor,” Spoehr said. “All who need the armor have it, and secondly, Army body armor is the best military body armor in the world. Anything you could procure commercially would not be as capable.”

The Army began reimbursing Soldiers Nov. 21 up to $1,100 for any single item such as protective body armor, combat helmets, ballistic eye protection, hydration systems, summer weight gloves, and knee and elbow pads.

A Soldier may be reimbursed for the purchase of a complete outer tactical vest, or for the separately-purchased components of an OTV, to include Small Arms Protective Insert plates, according to the U.S. Army Claims Service.

Soldiers can also be paid for these items if the items were purchased for them by someone else, such as members of their family.

File DD Form 2902

Current active-duty or reserve-component Soldiers who seek reimbursement should complete and file a DD Form 2902 with the first field grade commander in their current chain of command.

Soldiers must provide proof of deployment (such as deployment orders or a DD Form 214 noting deployment) and copies of all receipts or other proof of purchase for the items claimed, and turn in all reimbursable items to their unit at the time the claim is filed.

If a Soldier is not in possession of some or all of the items, he should submit a written statement explaining why the items are not available, officials said.

Former Soldiers and survivors of deceased Soldiers should complete DD Form 2902 and mail it directly to the U.S. Army Claims Service at the address provided in block 12 of the form. Forms must be accompanied by copies of proof of deployment and proof of purchase, and the items for which reimbursement is sought. Shipping costs for delivering items to the Claims Service are compensable and can be noted on the DD Form 2902.

Forms available on Web

Claimants can download a printable DD Form 2902 at www.jagcnet.army.mil under “Client Services and Links,” or call (301) 677-7009 ext. 431 for additional information. All claims must be filed by Oct 3.

Eventually the Army will have enough sets of armor to become a normal issue item, even in the United States. The goal was to have 800,000 sets by the second quarter of 2006.

“The Army has fielded roughly 700,000 sets of Interceptor Body Armor as of today,” Spoehr said. “We are meeting all our established goals.”

Who all has tattoos from the service?

Just wondering, almost everyone has them in the service. The most weird one I've seen was butterflies, flowers and dolphins on a guy. The coolest one I've seen was a red star on the elbows and drawings all around it. I don't have any, it would go against my dad's teachings.

Anyone keep up with headline news. Today the news covered an Airman who just returned from Iraq, was shot 3 times after a hot pursuit in Chino, CA. Apparently, the Airman, AF, was an MP. It was all over the news. He was a passenger in a corvette, which was driven by his friend. He obeyed the officer's orders, but when he was told to get up he was shot 3 times. He survived though! Ain't that some $hit? You get shot in your own country. I don't know what is story is, but I hear lawsuit already. He probably will end up losing some stripes for that stunt too.

How bout' that lady Sheehan, getting thrown out of the Capitol too? She was wearing a t-shirt with the numbers of dead from the Iraq war including her son. Charges were dropped though. Another politician's wife was arrested for protesting, but she was wearing a t-shirt that had "Support the Troops" written on her shirt.

You might be a Military Brat.....

You Might be a Military Brat...
  • if you actually like the clothes at the PX and don't mind that 100 other people are wearing the same thing.
  • if you wish you were back at the last place you were stationed and are only 10.
  • if the question "where are you from?" is awnsered with "I'm kinda from all over the place."
  • if you are amazed at people who have never left their hometown.
  • if you are commonly asked, "Is it hard always moving around?" and you don't know anything different.
  • if you goto a grocery store but insist on calling it a commisary.
  • if you have ever bagged groceries at the commisary on payday.
  • if you had/still have hospital corners on your bed.
  • if you don't really know the answer to the question "what is your home town."
  • if you ever feared turning 21 because they would take your id card away.
  • if you have spent more time on a military base than in real town even though you've been a civilian all your life.
  • if you ever got restricted to quarters or put on KP duty as a kid.
  • if you had a father who was always telling you to "Go police up your room!"
  • if you have ever been "dropped" for your grades at school.
  • if you have to explain that being born in Germany does not make you German.
  • if you know what "the land of the big PX" means.
  • if you actually miss shopping at AAFES or the PX.
  • if you have ever had to have an ID card to get back home from "down range."
  • if you have ever asked "CPT Smith, can Tommy come out and play?"
  • if you graduated from 12th grade and it was your 13th school.
  • if you had to tell your math teacher last school was teaching subtraction, new school was on division and you missed multiplication
  • if you live in one state and your father/mother lives in another because they were newly stationed there.

Protests at soldier's funeral

COLUMBUS, Ohio - States are rushing to limit when and where people may protest at funerals — all because of a small fundamentalist Kansas church whose members picket soldiers’ burials, arguing that Americans are dying for a country that harbors homosexuals.

During the 1990s, the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., went around picketing the funerals of AIDS victims with protest signs that read, “God Hates Fags.” But politicians began paying more attention recently when church members started showing up at the burials of soldiers and Marines killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Legislation is being considered in at least 14 states, and several of the bills moving quickly, with backing from legislative leaders and governors.

If they pass, the bills could set up a clash between privacy and free speech rights, and court challenges are almost certain.

“We’re not proposing to silence the speech of the Westboro Baptist Church, as offensive as most of us find that,” said Kansas Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, a Republican. Instead, he said, he is trying to achieve a balance that respects “the rights of families to bury their dead in peace.”

The church has about 75 members, most of them belonging to the extended family of Westboro Baptist’s pastor, the Rev. Fred Phelps. The church is an independent congregation that preaches a literal reading of the Bible.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, Phelps’ daughter and an attorney for the church, said states cannot interfere with their message that the soldiers were struck down by God because they were fighting for a country that harbors homosexuals and adulterers.

Lawmakers are “trying to introduce something that will make them feel better about the holes we’re punching in the facade they live under,” Phelps-Roper said. “If they pass a law that gets in our way, they will be violating the Constitution, and we will sue them for that.”

Protests at soldiers’ funerals: Whose rights should prevail?

14 states weigh new laws
Among the states considering such measures: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Some of the bills specify noisy, disruptive behavior or signs with “fighting words,” as in Wisconsin. Some bar protests within one or two hours before or after a funeral starts; others specify distances ranging from 10 car lengths to five blocks away; some include both.

Violations can bring fines of a few hundred dollars, up to 30 days in jail, or more. Wisconsin is calling for fines of up to $10,000; one of five Oklahoma bills would set a one-year jail sentence.

Missouri’s bill was named for Army Spc. Edward Lee Myers, 21, whose wife went to his funeral an hour early to try to avoid protesters. They were already across the road, holding signs that read “God Hates Fags” and “God Made IEDs,” a reference to roadside bombs.

‘Couldn’t even pay my last respects’
Her 5-year-old son kept asking why “mean people” were outside, undercover agents were in the church, and she worried that angry relatives might start a fight.

“I couldn’t even pay my last respects because of everything that was going on,” Jean Myers said.

Legislation against funeral protests was also introduced in West Virginia last month after a small knot of protesters from Westboro Baptist demonstrated outside a memorial for the 12 men killed in the Sago Mine disaster. The protesters held signs reading, “Thank God for Dead Miners,” “God Hates Your Tears” and “Miners in Hell,” arguing that the miners’ deaths were a sign of God’s wrath at America for tolerating gays.

“It’s just inhuman for a group that says it’s coming in the name of the Lord to protest a funeral,” said state Delegate Jeff Eldridge, a co-sponsor of the West Virginia bill.

Abortion protest law guideline?
If such restrictions are challenged, the courts will probably look to rulings on laws governing abortion protests, constitutional scholars said.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Florida ban on peaceful picketing within 300 feet of an abortion clinic, but allowed restrictions on behavior that impedes access to a clinic. However, the courts have allowed restrictions on picketing in front of doctors’ houses, saying privacy trumps free speech.

The question is whether a church, funeral home or cemetery is considered private or public during a ceremony, said Eugene Volokh, a law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles.

I have read some of the protests at military funerals in the midwest and that is sad. Why can't the religious freaks leave well enough alone?

Here, we have been working nonstop. Lots of shooting today. I didn't get hit, I'm not that lucky...

Damn, don't say that dude. Getting shot probably isn't cool, just stay safe.

Yeah this article really made me upset. Last year I attended four funerals and I can only imagine what it would feel like to lose someone in the war and to have protestors nearby. Heck, I'd be enraged! I really would do something out of the ordinary like get in their face and trash their signs. In the town I live in it's a liberal town. It's a college community and you see a lot of hippies running around here. They hold protests now and then, but nothing that would get my attention. We have these ladies dress in black that stand at the city hall during warm weather and protest. After this war is over and things get normal again, people will find something to b!tch about regardless, it's their nature. That's how voices are heard, but a funeral is no place to protest. That's just direspectful.

j/k about getting shot..

When reading the Stars and Stripes, I can see the Ndn names in there. I feel for your tribe. Your People have lost quite a few over here.

I seen a NM patch over here recently and seen some Ndns w/ the unit. I think they are Reservists. I haven't had a chance to talk to any of them cause we have been busy going out the wire. I do know a Dine soldier, who is a mechanic, and when I see him again, I'll ask him where they are from.

My friend never goes out the wire. He is what we call a Fobbit. He wants to go and fight but his job keeps him from doing that. I tell him about the shootings and IED's and how crazy it is but he wants to go still. And he did the same job when we were in Afghanistan together as well. He re-upped which is good, and wants to go to Fort Lewis, WA. I told him he better have a rain coat handy.
