Cool Stuff you carried in combat

People carry certain things in combat. Good luck charms, bibles, photos, etc.

What did you carry? Along with the usual gear, like flack vest, pro mask, MRE's, basic ammo load, helmet, casualty feeder cards, dog tags...

Panama: jungle boots, malaria pills, bug juice, MRE's, ammo, extra batteries for the PRC-77, sometimes I was the RTO, poncho, poncho liner, extra socks in a waterproof bag, and other times I was pointman. I carried a M-203 there.

For Operation: Desert Storm, I was just a rifleman in the Corps, I carried 1 eagle feather, a medicine bundle, my atropine kit, chemical detection tape worn on my leg, and arm, and my ammo, and M-16A2. And weapons cleaning kit. I wore either my jungle boots or my combat boots which ended up having my left heel fall off, so I ended up wearing my jungle boots which got loads of sand from the little drainage holes on the side. We didn't have the seude boots the military is wearing nowadays. plus we ate those frigging N.A.P.'s.
(nerve agent pills) which I'm sure got me ill from my time in the 1st Gulf War. I was given an eaglebone whistle, but left it at home, I didn't want have it broken during my time in the giant sandbox.

For Afghanistan, I had a medicine bundle in my left breast, pocket, malaria pills, glit tape on my left arm, and top of my helmet, night vision scope, 2 frag's, a claymore mine, extra batteries, lots of extra ammo, 2 canteens, a pack of Newports and Swisher Sweets, a few personal photos, waterproofed with my maps, protractor, and map pens, I never carried my wallet with me I would try to look at my photos at least once in the morning say good morning to them, and then it was time to put your game face on and go to combat. I carried lots of chewing gum and Jolly Ranchers too. Almost forgot that.

Iraq, I carried, another medicine bundle, 2 canteens, a pack of Newports with Swisher Sweets, (the locals, like to smoke, so try to appeal too them sometimes, by offering smokes- same with Afghanistan) the usual casualty feeder cards, pen and paper, things with arabic translation, intel on looking for certain vehicles, night vision, we didn't need maps here, we had our digital ones on a computer screen. We always had our chemical suits close by as well, as our pro masks. Ocassionally, I carried change and some candy and gave it to the kids when we were on patrol.

I carried alot of prayers too....They helped out alot on our time outside the wire. Especially, when we lost someone...

There are a few other things I carried...seemed to have slipped my mind...so will post them later.

Oh yeah...I had a lighter, and a gerber tool as well...along with a knife someone from the 82nd Airborne Division lost in the tent in Afghanistan. Still got the blade.

Dang 50cal, no photos...how can that be against regs? If you can hump it, you can carry it?

I didn't have any tunes myself, I left that back on the base, my peeps did have MP3 players in Afghanistan cause we would be on the road for hours and not see anything on the highway...

Baghdad, Iraq, we had a lil cd player, but you couldn't hear it cause the motor was so loud in the uparmored Humvee. Plus, I had to have the hand mike in my ear constantly so I wasn't able to listen to music there.

The locals, tried our Newports and some of the peeps liked them, for others it was way too strong for them. The Swisher Sweets were a hit though. Everyone liked those in Afghanistan and Iraq.

@ who is gonna enforce the photo carrying outside the wire...

Oh yeah, 550 cord is good. I'm glad I didn't have to handle the smelly arabs and afghans. I did once, and after that, I told my soldiers they would do that work from on, cause I couldn't handle the stench. We got lots of the zip ties...man, those work good.

Yeah, we didn't have uparmored in Afghanistan, just in Iraq....it was like that movie, The Road Warrior. Guns hanging over the sides of the Humvee, and sitting on top of water boxes and MRE's. We got hit by an IED, but the triggerman must have been a nOOb, he missed us and hit some civilian van near Qalat. He ended up killing the Chief of Police and one of his officers that day. They buried there dead right where he died, on the side of the road and drove off in what was left of the van.

Porn...there was enuff of that around... mags, dvds. All over the place.

we was mobile in either a LAV or amtrac so me and the crew had to live outta one rucksack and one ammo can. we were a rolling ammo dump anyways complete with a line charge *heavily modified btw* satchels, bangalores, fuses, det cord and so on

i scored a weather proof flight crew binder and stored my GTA's and mine cards and for no real reason a picture of Cindy Crawford!! haha not even a body shot just a real nice pretty pic of her face.. other things in my ammo can was out of country copenhagen *luv it or hate it*, letters from the gurl, DECK OF CARDS for spades *where i learned to lie like a pro*, batteries and my tunes

i totally miss rolling covered by a weapons section in hummers. the air just seemed cooler for some reason

LMFAO!!!!.....Copenhagen in the cardboard can was GOLD!!!...LOL!!!....if it was in the black plastic can, then the valule went down...LOL!!!...my neice sent me like 3 rolls from the sstates and I swear to god I sold each one for 25 bucks a can!!!!!....LMAO!!!...then I lost most of that money in poker game outside Fallujah.....LOL!!!........

LOL!!!....yeah we were like the movie Road Warrior......since I was the squad leader for our section, I had 8 Marines total including myself in that vehicle.....My driver and I upfront, then the SAW on top of the cab surrounded in some sort of cheap machine gun nest comprised of MRE boxes and ALICE packs....LOL!!!...then the guy facing the rear of the vehicle (who had a really cool skull bandanna covering his face) had his 240 suspended by twisted 550 cord that was tied on each end of the highbacks frame.....LOL!!!!...and the other 4 Marines had their weapons facing outboard the whole trip while sitting on ammo cans and AT-4's.......LMAO!!!!.....talk about a really great time.....inside the vehicle was a stereo we had bought at the PX and were jamming everything from AC/DC to Johnny Cash........and of course our ever present Blue Force Tracker and Cope cans laying about amid a chaotic scene of peanut butter, porn mags and spare ammo mags......I once bartered a roll of toilet paper and babywipes for this one dudes ray-bans......dam that was the life.....

I'm gonna tell my son to read your comments so he'll know what to bring with him or we will know
what to send him! One question tho..... generic or cushy soft toilet paper? LOL Would dried or smoked meat be good too? I was wondering because the smoked meat smells really strong! even if it is wrapped and put away you can still smell the smoke. My son loves the smoked meat with a lil cayenne pepper on it! I send him smoked meat and the other guys kept asking him for some.

One of the things I found out was you can clean your weapon with the babywipes! It really works good.

Now, in the 'Stan, when we didn't have Humvees to ride and we flew in helo's...we had to really lighten our load then. We carried everything on our backs. It was limited to ammo, water, chow, extra batteries, and babywipes. We stayed out the wire few 3-4 weeks at a time...sleeping in the snow or the sand, depending on what part of the country we were in at that time.

If you forgot something in the rear, you were f*****!!! Good thing my fireteam leaders were all over the packing list, and my guys never lost anything...but one of our so called, "High Speed Wannabe Ranger Squad Leaders" who whined about not getting a Bronze Star in country lost a spare barrel for a M249... It was written off as a combat loss...even though the soldier didn't have it tied down in his ruck. Shoulda had a statement of charges against him, but it didn't happen that way. Oh well, outta my paygrade.

Oh yeah, he got his Bronze Star when we left the 'Stan...more sorry a$$ awards handed out like candy.

I usually just went with what I had in my MRE...EXCEPT for the Jumbalaya!

But I learned as well. Hot sauce does help.

I send him smoked meat and the other guys kept asking him for some.

You can vacuum seal the dried meat. I got some that way in Iraq...the only thing is, you can't bring it back thru customs when he is redeploying to the Big PX.

we had 2 small American flags taped to our brush guard on the humvee.....when I left for Kuwait to fly back to the Big PX, my driver took them off and gave them to me, I got them mounted in a plaque along with a picture of my entire squad in MOPP suits......I brought them back with me when I got rotated back the second time.....

What did I carry? Well the usual stuff. Flak, Kevlar (that was one size too small, and didn't fit right because the Marine Corps got ride of the old kevlars with the suspension lining, and replaced them with the football pads). CAT Tourniquet on my left shoulder.

I found a small first aid pouch somewhere, and molle'd it to my flak jacket. Inside I had a small bag of hetstarch, with an IV set up, IV catheters, Quickclot, and a 9-line on a dry erase board, and a map pen (to fill the blanks for the VC). Lots, and lots of non-latex gloves. And Crystalite pouches.

Elsewhere on my flak: Full-combat load of 5.56 rounds and M-16 mags. IFAK. That big green holster for my M9, and a 9mm mag holder. Also a camel back molle'd to my back. Plus SAPI's front and back, and the groin protector. Also the Caduece right smack in the middle of my flak. My KBAR.i wore a neck gaiter around my neck, although when it got colder I swapped it out for one of my firefighting hoods. I wore whatever I could find for eye-pro because I lost my ESS goggles during the spin up.

Wore both flight suits and tanker suits... Tanker suits, by far were more comfortable. I had a medicine bundle in my left breast pocket, my kill card in the other pocket. And a CAT in my left leg pocket. I had my leg holster for my 9mm strapped to my left leg. I kept my M9 on my flak, while mounted, and switched it over to my leg when I was dismounted.

On my other leg I had another medic pack, which I would have used over my big bag. Inside of it I had: Lots of Israeli Battle Dressings (aka Cinch-tight). Asherman Chest seals. Needles for chest decompressions. Quickclot, and Hemcon. Old school battle dressings. Ace bandages. Trauma shears... and for my Marines.... LOTS AND LOTS OF MOTRIN, MOTRIN, MOTRIN.

Desert boots with the extra dog tag on the wrong foot.

In the vehicle with me: My M16A4 rifle (which the BZO on it sucked- never got it right), with ACOG and a Specter sling I bought at Lejeune. Butt stock pouch with another M16mag. Within arms reach, I had a mag loaded with nothing but tracer rounds. Mostly I kept that for spotting targets at night for air support, etc.

My Aide Bag pretty had everything that my leg pack had, but just more of it. I also had colored flagging tape for marking causalties for Triage. Actual triage tags. Lots of IV bags. Intubation kit. Cric kit. Chest decompression kit. Ice packs. Heat packs. Extra M16 mags, extra 9mm mags, a few porno mags. I had flex-cuffs strapped to the outside of it.

My assault pack: More battle dressings, CATs, IV set ups. Lots of cravats. My iPod. My FMF PQS. Extra MRE snacks and entree's that I would rat f*** and field strip. Lots of Crystalite, and gatorade pouches. Pougey-bait from the chowhall: pop-tarts, muffins, cookies, chips.

In vehicles I ended up being the A-Gunner/A-driver most of the times. So I was pretty quick at swapping out SAW and M240 barrels.

When I did dismounted patrols, and I wouldn't carry my aid bag, and would swap out the non-essential stuff from my assault pack, and beef up the medical supplies. I always made my vehicle the CCP, and left my aid bag there, so I could work on more than one Marine at a time (if it came down that). I also spread-load extra medical equipment amongst my Marines who were Combat Life Savers. I also required all of my Marines to carry their CAT's in their left leg pocket. I also made tourniquets out of cravats, and had them stuff them in their IFAK.

When I did do dismounted patrols, I would ALWAYS look to carry something extra for my Marines... Extra loaded mags, SAW/240 barrels, Frags, Pyro, chemlights, whatever was needed to get the job done. I also knew some of the dirty habits of my Marines... So I would carry lots of extra chew, dip, smokes, etc. I got hooked on Redman chew while I was over there, but I always rat-f*** dip and smokes from care packages, to save them for later.

I tried to plan for everything, and despite some skirmishes, I never took a casualty from a Marine in my unit, and my deployment was fairly uneventful.

I'm guessing I had some powerful medicine with me.
