Well, its now 2011 in Afghanistan...no incoming, no rockets, no small arms fire, yet...haji must be out celebrating as well...

Anyways, Happy New Year and hope the new decade goes good for everyone here.

Whiskey Echo Bravo, out.

Lot of the schools are built by the other nations, local gov., and I have heard of the Mortensen guy, but no, have not seen any schools or even seen him. Have seen the progress though...its good the kids are in school. That is one of the big priorities of not just the locals, but ours as well. Education...they need it here.

We had a suicide attack the other day. He got mostly locals...its hard to catch these guys when they wear the vests under their robes.

i read mortenson's three cups of tea. he has a very interesting story. of course with education comes the ability of training students to be nurses in their respective villages, prolonging life expectancy, curbing disease and childbirth mortality rates, proper dieting, etc... and of course bringing running water to isolated villages.

with recent protesting in tunisia and egypt, it does not seem that extremists/ fundamentalists have any major part in it and i'm sure both pakistan and afghanistan have taken notice of that. if anything i hope that it changes perceptions and outlooks.

Looking back once again from my 5th tour now done in the middle east / central asia and still lots to be done. Glad to have been part of the GWOT. I served with a lot of good folks out there from all over the globe this time. 49 different countries are now there.

Stay safe out there to those in the line of fire still.

I finally got around to getting my Tribal Colors on photobucket. I have carried them all over the middle east, Europe, and the pacific. The guy on the right is a one star General. He was a Special Forces guy. He was recently promoted and is now a two star general. Suprisingly, him and I served in the same places almost at the same time in the middle east, but never met. He was one cool character.

I have some USA flags as well, one from my reenlisting on the USS Arizona Memorial, and Iraq and Afghanistan.

I had a 3"X5" flag that was folded in my top left pocket. The girl scouts had folded them and given them out to all of us.

The PX sold some in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Krygystan. I saw a few reup ceremonies as well and soldiers got a flag that way.

It was really fun to read this thread again, remembering some of the good times and the bad ones as well. All that gear we carried, and missions we went on day, night, snow, rain, sandstorms, etc. I would do it all over again.

Fall of 2003 at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, I met a Navajo NDN who was in Special Forces. We chatted for a bit and asked me my Tribe. I told him Nez Perce. In his cargo pocket in a small plastic bag he pulled out a handkerchief with some words silkscreened on it. The words were Noon Nimipu. He asked what that meant, I told him it means, "We the People" in Nez Perce. He said he met a Nez Perce NDN and he gave him the gift. We shook hands and went our separate ways as we had our military operations ongoing. My platoon was set up in a defensive perimeter waiting for the Taliban when I saw him one more time in the winter of 2003 on the Pakistan / Afghanistan border manning a .50 cal in the turret HUMVEE, we waved at each other and said hello again. His vehicle patrol was headed south and never saw him again. But that was cool someone gave him that handkerchief with the Nez Perce words on it.

Operation: Mountain Storm spring offensive March 2004.
There is a small village on the other side of the trees. We did capture some Taliban on this day.

We had landed at LZ Boulder early in the morning set up a defensive perimeter for the other choppers to bring on the rest of our company, this was the 10th Mountain Division. We were in the Uruzgan province.

I carried my medicene bundle along with local feathers I found around FOB Marez in Mosul while with the 25th ID during 2003/04. What I carried that drove me crazy was a bayonet. It was required even though we carried our personal cutting blades. I quess I was somewhat lucky that my weapon was the M249 SAW so I got to carry a hachet. Duening 2007/08 Baghdad with 101st we had to wear everything, groin protecters, neck guards, and anything else we could come up with. Felt like the Pillsbary Dough Boy. Felt a little ashamed since I started in the Marine Corps 1980/83. Infantry instructors were Vietnam vets who went into the jungle with nothing. Also the stories and history of those in WWII dueing the island hopping also who went into the jungles with their uniform, weapon, ammo, and maybe two canteens. They were some badasses back then.

The little attachments on the IBA did get out of hand. At the 10th MTN DIV. if the piece of gear wasn't issued, which happened sometimes, we didn't have to wear it. Like the neck guards and side plates, etc.

The hatchet though, that would have been nice to carry. We never got real close enough to the Taliban or the insurgents though to use in hand to hand. Usually it was bullets flying. And that was about 100 meters away.

ALICE pack. This was in use primarily before 9-11. The Army went to the MOLLE system soon after.

I used the ALICE pack in Panama and the Persian Gulf War.

MOLLE in Afghanistan and Iraq.
