LOL, we all can remember the days of not being able to tell family members and friends what was going on. Man did those days suck!!!!! I remember getting a call in the middle of the night and told to pack my stuff and report to my unit. I couldn't tell my now ex-wife where I was going or when I'd be back. Man was she pissed!!!!!!!!! A week later I get home and still couldn't tell her where I'd been. She didn't talk to me for a few days, but what can you do?:Chatter

Alot of people don't realize that the pain and sacrifices that our fighting men and women make are shared back home by their wives, husbands, and families. It takes a strong woman to take the reins in her husbands absence, be strong for their chidren, and balance the fear and lonliness that plague them every second their loved one is gone. I honestly think its high time they were thanked and given their due. Its alot easier to deal with another day of crap when you pull that plastic bag out of your Kevlar and look at their picture, it kept me focused when things were bad and gave me something to look foward to. Just a random memory of the many ways family strengthens us. Even in absence.

Very well put hispeed. I completely agree no one gives military families any credit except other military families.

I don't know about everyone else, but I would like to see our circle get bigger. Maybe we can turn this thread into a forum. Cover things like Vetran's issues, the VA, whatever else the rest of you can think of. Think I'll try posting a thread in Chit Chat inviting more veterans. Besides I'm kinda bored this morning!!!

Here is an open leter entitled "We don't feel like hero's anymore." from a young soldier stationed in Iraq to his hometown newspaper.

A soldier's view in Iraq.
By Pfc. Isaac Kindblade
The Oregonian, August 5, 2003

I am a private first class in the Army's 671st Engineer Company out of Portland. I just wanted to let you know a little bit of what we are up to, maybe so that you can have another opinion of what's going on over here in Iraq.

We have been in country since Feb. 14 and were a part of the Third Infantry Division's march into Baghdad. In fact, as a result of some serious miscommunications, we were the front line of the charge on two very distinct occasions.

We haven't been a huge part of the war. We are bridge builders, and we were here in the event that the Iraqis blew up the bridges on their retreat. They didn't, so we didn't have to do much.

We were scheduled for 13 missions at the start of the war. We did three or four bridge-related missions. We fill in where we are needed, whether it be guarding enemy prisoners of war, operating traffic control points, patrols on the Tigris River or guard duty of police stations. Our primary mission at this point is transportation, because we happen to drive very large trucks.

A lot is being said about poor morale. That seems to be the case all over the place. It's hot, we've been here for a long time, it's dangerous, we haven't had any real down time in months and we don't know when we're going home.

I think a big aspect has been the people here. When the war had just ended, we were the liberators, and all the people loved us. Convoys were like one long parade. Somewhere down the line, we became an occupation force in their eyes. We don't feel like heroes anymore.

We are doing the best we can, trying to get this place back on its feet so we can go home -- making friends with the locals and trying to enforce peace and stability.

A lot is made of our military's might. Our Abrams tanks, our Apache helicopters, computers, satellites, this and that. All that stuff is great, but it's essentially useless in peacekeeping ops. It is up to the soldiers on the ground armed with M-16s and a precious few words of Arabic.

The task is daunting, and the conditions are frightening. We can't help but think of "Black Hawk Down" when we're in Baghdad surrounded by swarms of people. Soldiers are being attacked, injured and killed every day. The rules of engagement are crippling. We are outnumbered. We are exhausted. We are in over our heads.

The president says, "Bring 'em on." The generals say we don't need more troops. Well, they're not over here.

It would take a group of supermen to do what's been asked of us. Maybe people back home think we are. Hell, maybe we are. I'm 20, and I can't help but think that serving in a war is a rite of passage, earning my generation a place in the history books.

I'm honored to be over here, and I realize that this is the experience of a lifetime. All the same, we are ready to come home.

-------

Pfc. Isaac Kindblade of Cornelius enlisted in the Army at age 17 before his graduation from Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton.

Thats the problem I've noticed with Muslim countries and such. Once the supreme power is overthrown you have an infinite number of jackals waiting to slip into their shoes. Religious fanatics, sects, political figures, warlords, loyalists, terrorists, the list goes on and on. The last thing they care about is the welfare of their country and its people. They only want to secure power for themselves and or their factions. They have no interest in sharing power or responsibilty with anyone else who might live there. Anyone who tries to set up a government which empowers everyone equally as in a democracy, they try to attack.
As we see as one of the huge problems in Afghanistan. Yes major fighting has stopped in Iraq, but the war for a stable government in Iraq is far from over.

I've been thinking alot about my time in the military and some of my fondest memories (along with some of my worst) were my time overseas in Korea. It is a hard and lonely tour of duty. But over there I met up with some skins who made my tour fly by. We founded our own little clique which we dubbed Native American Pride, later evolving into RES (Red Earth Society). We kept each others spirits up, we did everything together. It was a home away from home in a very foriegn land devoid of powwows and frybread. Thinking back on them now I find myself missing my buds and wondering how they are. So I send this prayer and shout out to them. Little Wind, Remy, Sluggo, Hunter, Billander (ashkii-zilla!), Star, Yolanda, Tanya, and the rest of my couisins who made my life so much better having known you. I wish you love and prosperity in your lives and hope that somewhere along the powwow trail or the roads we each take in life, we meet again. GreasyFace Singers 4 Life! LOL

I have another friend, of French heritage, who is in boot camp right now with the Army. He went into Intelligence as a translator. The recruiters said "you can learn a Arabic or you can learn Korean--it's your choice." He chose Korean. So, it seems I'll have yet another friend in a danger zone soon.

So how was everyone's weekend? I spent the weekend working around the house. Trying to get the computer/craft room finished so I have a real place to bead instead of at the kitchen table.

I spent the weekend trying to stay in the air conditioning. Shoot--over 100 degrees around here lately. And muggy as all get out!
