Jerry Cleveland Jr.

It's a sad day for the powwow world, Champion fancy dancer Jerry Cleveland Jr passed away this weekend while attending the San Manual powwow. Jerry was a well-known and well-liked champion, who traveled throughout the United States. He will be missed by his fancy dance brothers.

Received the news, still hard to believe. A straight up guy, a champion dancer with a smooth dance style. Competed many times against him, would always see him at all major contest powwows across the U.S. & Canada. Would always ask each other if we stopped on on time.

Condolences to the family, much respect to Jerry Cleveland, Jr. The dance arena won't be the same without him. Take a little time to say a prayer for him & the family.

A-ho.

what happened? I admired him as a dancer, and as a friend. I have known his family for a while, and even after leaving the dance circle due to family issues, coming back he greeted me with a smile, a hug, and a quick, "where have you been?" That is the kind of person he was. Prayers to the family.

This is sad news. I remember him dancing as a young man against Beaver Grant and Kieth Colston. We reminisced a couple of years ago about those times 20 years ago.

My condolences to the family. Dance on, Jerry.

the Fancy Feather Brotherhood truly mourns the loss of a great one. Jerry you will be missed. I'll always remember those arm bustles.
Prayers of peace and calmness to the family.

Tribute to Jerry

This is an excerpt from an online article.

http://hocakworak.com/2011/ho-chunks-at-hunting-moon/

A moment came for many in the arena this weekend seeing a very familiar Fancy Dance outfit, as Courage Cleveland wore the late Jerry Cleveland Jr’s Bustles and Outfit. Courage said via Facebook earlier in the week that he would pay tribute to his father and dance for him. Courage took home a 1st Place Win! Many clapped, some stood and some shed tears of joy.

Another tribute to the Memory of Jerry Cleveland Jr. came Sunday afternoon when his father Gerald Cleveland Sr., dancing in full regalia, was accompanied by his wife, children, and grandchildren who all were dancing throughout the weekend as they danced around the circle together as they approached the drum group Midnite Express. Gerald pulled an Eagle Whistle from around his neck and a beautiful call came from the Whistle and the drum was fast to respond. Midnite began singing a song composed by Jeremy “Worm” Dearly of the drum Midnite Express, friends of “Heyna” Jerry. Members of the drum took their seats and sang Heyna’s song hard and loud.

It was an awesome sight to see. There were two lines of Men Traditional dancers on each side as Gerald danced hard back and forth between the lines of the dancers that came to support the family, the whistle, and give good feelings to what was taking place. As Gerald danced between all four calls of his Eagle Whistle, his grandson Courage Cleveland could be seen dancing his heart out. To Courage’s right, a line formed with an estimated 14 Men’s Fancy Dancers, all coming to dance at Courage’s side. On the outside of the line of Traditional Dancers, where Gerald was dancing was his wife Iris and his children and grandchildren. Many stood and danced proud, but at the end of the song as Gerald came over to shake hands and pay gifts of thanks to the drum, Gerald could not hold back his tears. As he wiped the tears to the side he spoke to Lead Singers Opie Day-Bedeau and Crow Bellcourt. Opie said, “Gerald used his whistle as a way and means of encouragement for his grandchildren and the rest of the family and for all those in mourning. To recognize that this was Jerry’s way of life, he loved this way of life, this pow-wow life.” Bellcourt said, “In talking with Gerald, he came to the drum and said he was here to be with his grandchildren this weekend and to dance in Memory of Jerry.” Cleveland gave a Pendleton Blanket, Tobacco, and some Zura to Honor their drum.

Rest in peace my friend....
